Entrepreneur and philanthropist Niall Mellon began his charitable work in South Africa in 2002, focusing on building quality social housing in the townships. Over ten years the charity worked with over 22,000 volunteers to build 25,000 homes for 125,000 impoverished South Africans. Khayelitsha Township was the location of the biggest ever housing building blitz back in 2008, when some 2,000 volunteers helped to complete hundreds of homes here. This submission details the history of Mellon Educate. This infographic uses a timeline approach to call out various milestones, which is often a strong technique. Readers are able to pick up on the visual queues that portray time quickly, and then are able to digest that information much easier. In general, the design is lacking. There are only two small photos, and the rest is content. Cutting the copy down into short, bulleted lists paired with visuals like illustrated icons is much more effective than simply writing long sentences and paragraphs. There are several numbers throughout, and these are often great options to pull out and display with charts, graphs, or other methods to show scale. While this is a good start, in order to function as an infographic, it needs substantial edits. Overall, we give this a D.
