It can be one of the most frustrating times for a driver. You’re heading to the beach on a family vacation and all of a sudden there’s a toll and you have no loose change! We often accept tolls as a necessary evil but many people aren’t aware of the history and facts behind toll roads. After hours of research, we’ve put together the facts you need to know about tolls including most expensive roads, which states have the most tolls, and even where E-ZPass is accepted.
The design makes use of great illustrations (the first main car looks like it’s made of chocolate!) and a few good examples of data visualization. Text is kept quite minimal, so illustration, typography, and section headers guide the viewer quickly through the information.
One visual that I think could be simplified a bit is under “Toll Roads that Earn the Most.” The design seems to indicate that both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Pennsylvania Turnpike combined would be required to pay off the debt of Harrisburg. However, once you read the information, it’s really only talking about the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s revenue. It’s important that all visuals be clear so that the text doesn’t need to do the “heavy lifting.”
In all I’d give this infographic an A-! It’s engaging, uses a pretty good amount of data viz, and is well designed.
