While this graphic makes great use of charts and graphs, eliminating the need for very much text, I’m not sure the stats are really supporting the story. Every stat shows that traffic accidents have gone down over the years, which I think goes against the message that they might be trying to tell. Since the company is talking about legal recourse for fatal car accidents, although we still see that there are a lot of fatal car accidents in Dallas each year, the takeaway seems to be that things are getting better.
It seems like a more targeted approach would only offer statistics from the most recent year. That way, the story wouldn’t be that fatal car accidents are going down, but that fatal car accidents are currently prevalent. That would create a greater sense of intrigue and urgency in the viewer, causing them to wonder about the need for legal services in the future, as opposed to the current sense that traffic safety is improving.
In all I’d give this infographic a D because it doesn’t seem to tell the intended story, and lacks a narrative to help guide the reader to digest the stats in the right order. For all the design tricks of the trade, infographics are only as valuable as their story!
