Can We Make Real Lightsabers?

It seems we are not that far from getting our very own lightsaber. Even those who are not Star Wars fanatics have to admit that the idea of creating a real life lightsaber seems exciting. This infographic shows us the available and missing components and it seems that the Power Source is soon to be available. The latest push towards making lightsabers come true has happened in this department. Researchers at MIT have only recently discovered a new way to dramatically power up lithium batteries, enough that they could potentially provide the required electrical charge for plasma generation. Needless to say, this is still in its early stages, but it does give hope that small cells will soon be able to supply power to all sorts of portable devices, lightsabers included.

Final Grade

This design (which is animated on the company's site) looks at what technologies might be required to make an actual lightsaber. From the components described here, it looks like we're really getting there! However, without sources it's hard to say if these components are the only ones necessary to make a functioning lightsaber or not — or to verify how far we are. The visual is engaging and anyone who's heard of Star Wars can instantly tell what the subject is, but I'd rather see more detailed levels that show each component (like a diatium focusing crystal) in more detail to visually explain their functions. I'd rate this a C-.
