This infographic was submitted to us by Mimecast, who provided this description:

The research surveys 500 IT decision-makers in the UK, US and South Africa. IT decision-makers have an overview of the content of company inboxes that a typical employee does not have. This empowers them with a broad understanding of what the shape of email is and enables them to evaluate email best practice. Check out the Infographic and key findings from the data in the Shape of Email Report, which include some interesting disparities.

This short and sweet design is fairly effective at getting its point across without dragging on. The key takeaways are that 21% of emails on work accounts aren’t even work related, and even fewer than that are mission-critical. We also take up a lot of our inbox with internal emails. I’m a little confused about where the final stat in the “inbox” imagery fits in. So 64% of people believe social poses a security risk.. what does that have to do with work emails? Social poses an email security risk? Perhaps some rephrasing or a few more words could clear this up. Also, the positioning of those bottom three stats is odd — why is archiving thrown in between two stats about social media?

This could get even better if the two biggest stats (and the inbox ones below) were actually visualized. If people could really see that the vast majority of their emails are internal, it would get the message across even better.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B: it’s concise and clear on the top stats, but the bottom 5 stats could use just a bit of work to clarify and visualize better.

This infographic was submitted to us by ISACA, who included this description:

“This infographic compares IT managers/departments attitude towards BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), the riskiest activity an employee can do with company property (laptop, blackberry, etc) and employee use of corporate assets and time for work/life balance across 6 regions:

• North America
• Latin America
• Europe
• Asia
• Africa
• Oceania

ISACA is a non-profit global IT organization that provides education, certification and guidance to its IT professionals member base.”

There is an interesting comparison of office politics around the world here. I also appreciate that the IG is 100% data viz. There is no extraneous text, the information is concise and relevant, and the organization is quite simple.

I think it actually borders on too little text–without the description provided outside of the IG, the viewer may have no immediate way of knowing what ISACA does. That provides a necessary background for properly appreciating the information. The lack of text also makes some of the data confusing. I could use an extra few words telling me what the percentages on the highest-risk employee activity mean. Is that the percentage of employers who agree that losing/misplacing a work-supplied device is the highest-risk activity? Is it the number of businesses who experienced a lost or misplaced work-supplied device? Data that isn’t properly explained is just as ineffective as data that isn’t visualized.

It’s also a bit confusing that for each question, the responses are not the same. The second statistic about personal use is clear, because all the percentages represent “allow to promote work-life balance.” But the color-coding/varying answers on other questions is not so accessible. I puzzled over why, for example, we couldn’t see all the numbers for regions that saw more employee online shopping. Why do some have to show only the “more” numbers, while others show only the “about the same” numbers? If, say, only 12% of employers in North America saw a rise in employee online shopping, I’d like to see that compared with other “more” responses. The data seems harder to follow this way.

Overall I’d give this IG a B-. Just a bit more explanation would provide so much more clarity, making this infographic concise and effective.

>

This infographic about wasted time in the workplace comes to us from the people at Biz 3.0.

I really like the overall flow of the data presented in this infographic and I give it an A. I think that the data is depicted in an easy to read way and many of the graphics used compliment the statistics nicely. I particularly like the graphics showing what people waste time on at work, such as the burgers for long lunch breaks and the suitcases for conducting personal business. The large graphic of a magnifying glass over a globe is a nice touch as well for representing internet monitoring by employers.

One thing that I don’t really like is the pie chart at the very top. I find it to be misleading because although the title of it is productivity loss, only one of the statistics provided actually has to do with productivity loss while the other statistic regards social media policy which is a topic dealt with later on in the infographic. I would rather see this pie chart have more statistics about productivity loss, or removed entirely.

Another strong feature of this infographic is the data about workplace use of email, the simple graphics of envelopes colored in with different shades are a good way to represent this data. I like the overall color scheme, the contrast between the blue and orange works well, and the few focal point graphics that pop out with different colors break up the monotony. One example of this is the chart of blacklisted websites that really stands out in the middle and uses nice logos from the actual sites.

This is a great infographic with a good balance between text and visuals. It flows well and presents statistics in a straighforward way with good data visualization.
