The design here is pretty busy, but the illustrations are great and the style is clean overall. It just looks a bit crowded between the illustrations, the icons, the data viz and the text! Still, the info is really useful for skiers with the travel bug, and seems like it could really help them pick their favorite destinations — especially with the circle graphs showing the ratio of available courses for each skill level. Then it just comes down to where they can get some cheap flights to and from their ski adventures!

I also love the visualizations for distance from the airport and elevation. Creative data viz goes a long way in making an impression in the infographics world. However, it does make the final section pretty off-putting in comparison. A large texty chart doesn’t look like something you want to read after coming across engaging charts and graphs. With a little more time and space, more data viz could be employed for the remaining sections. It also seems you don’t need the Mountain Elevations, Resort Elevation, or Cost of Stay Indicator in that bottom chart, since they are already conveyed in the first section — so that would eliminate a lot of the bulk!

In all I’m a fan of this IG, so I’d love to see the bottom chart slimmed down so that it can finish with the same “bang” with which it starts!

This is really cute and creative. The use of data viz is great–the designer picked a nice way for the infographic to remain light and accessible without being weighed down by traditionally structured graphs and charts. Simple tools like altering the size of an icon to reflect the percentage or proportion keep data viz looking unobtrusive, even when there’s a lot of it–and there should be a lot of it. Some of my favorite examples here are the clock showing preferred departure times, the beds showing length of stay (the stubby 0.8% bed made me laugh–it looks so uncomfortably short!), and the diving board for preferred pool types. The summary at the bottom is also nice, since it condenses all the data into a snapshot of your typical British vacation. Text like this is completely admissible in an infographic. It isn’t telling us any new information; it’s just summing up points.

(Just as an aside, it was surprising to see that so many more people go on two week vacations than ten day vacations!)

I suppose my only critiques are that the typeface is a little ordinary and the overall design is fairly sketch-basic. I’m certainly not saying go crazy with 3D, but maybe some more textures, gradients or shadows in some places would liven it up a little. The way it’s currently designed is a rather busy and cluttered. These are definitely subjective critiques, though..

Given the extremely informative, well-organized, data viz-reliant nature of this infographic, it’s earned itself a B. Good work!

This is full of bright, fun colors and is a great guide for folks visiting the St. Augustine area on vacation. I love the fish at the top and bottom, and the scroll style seems to be fitting for all the historical landmarks in the area.

As an infographic, though, this doesn’t really succeed. It is entirely based on text, leaving nothing up to data visualization. And since the information displayed here is really more pamphlet or guidebook style rather than facts and statistics, there wasn’t much room to make this into a true infographic. Infographics should tell a story, but visually–if there is more text than imagery, or if the text is telling information that could be represented by a graph or chart, then the infographic needs some help.

There are also some problems with syntax consistency here. The designer didn’t decide whether a sentence should start after each place name, or whether the place name should serve as the beginning to the descriptive sentence. It would be easy to play around with this by leaving the typography the way it is but removing the hyphen. That way, the copy could read something like, “The historical Fountain of Youth park offers guests…”

This would still be a handy thing to have around if you were to go on vacation to this city, though. If you were trying to ask for directions to one of the sites and couldn’t remember the name, you might pull up this infographic on your phone and suddenly have the name at hand! However, to grade it as an infographic, I’d have to give it a D-.

This infographic was submitted to us by UltimateCoupons.com. It has a nice all-American color scheme going on, which is very appropriate considering it contains data regarding the “American Vacation”. I especially like the use of yellow as an addition to the traditional red, white, and blue scheme. It works well because it brings to mind sunshine (something most of us like to see when on vacation).

There is some data-visualization in this infographic, however, not nearly enough considering the amount of information given. It would be extremely difficult to decipher statistics from this graphic if all the text was removed. With that said, I think the typography used throughout this graphic is very visually pleasant.

The graphic also flows really well- for the most part. I’m not sure about the final statistic about shark attacks because it seems a little disconnected from the theme of the rest of the information. Perhaps this shark attack data could be used in a separate infographic highlighting information specific to vacations with a beach destination.

Overall I would give this graphic a C. It relies too heavily on typography and missed several opportunities for data-visualization. But, it tells a nice story with the information used, up until the very end with the shark attack data. With a bit more data-visualization and a bit less wordy, this infographic could be a home run.

This sinful infographic was brought to us by Slots of Vegas.

Beginning with a cute night skyline, this infographic looks promising. There’s a nice use of iconography throughout, hearkening to the slot machines so often cited in the statistics here. The designer makes great use of color, making each section distinct and visually intriguing. And who doesn’t love the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign?

That said, there are several things that could be improved here. The red ribbon headings could be more effective if the data were properly organized to fit in each section, instead of overlapping between them. “Guess what..?” includes statistics about places people visited, which reiterates “Where can I go?” Some of the iconography really isn’t working. For example, at first I read the title as “What Do in…,” completely skipping over the blue icon. Then I thought the icon was a strange 2: “What 2 Do in…” Once I spotted the identical purple icon in “Quick facts,” I realized it was supposed to be a person, and the title reads “What People Do in…” That took pretty long. Plus, using the British pound currency symbol to indicate weight of shrimp consumption doesn’t translate, especially not under a heading “Where can I go?”

In addition to typos and organizational issues, some prime visualization opportunities are passed up or deferred to classic/repetitive tactics. In “Quick facts,” what is that wedding trophy doing amidst a (nicely re-imagined, I might add) circle chart of percentages? In “How to Move in Las Vegas” I would have loved to see the taxi portrayed as larger than the bus, to show that there are far more taxis than buses in Vegas.

With cute smiling people all over this infographic, nice Vegas-like abundance of color, and a wealth of relevant data, this infographic is better than some. However, consistency, technical problems, and organization are holding it back. Overall, I’d give this infographic a C. More editing and cleaner organization/visualization will take this further.
