In celebration of this year’s Valentine’s Day, My Voucher Codes has delved deep into the romantic mind-set of the UK, creating an infographic to demonstrate just how loved up and spend-happy us Brits really are. In a poll of 2,446 people, we uncovered statistics to show which cities are more inclined to splash out on loved ones, the most popular types of gift – as well as how couples and singletons plan to spend the day. Are we a country of sentimental souls, or do we simply give in to commercial hype? We’ll leave it up to you to decide.

This infographic has some good examples of data viz (a heart pie chart!) and is packed full of statistics. It’s a very clean and well-organized infographic, so it’s simple to browse straight through it without stumbling on anything confusing. I learned a lot about Valentine’s Day in the UK!

I feel that the top portion of the infographic (from the title through the “Biggest Romance Spenders” section) could be more visually engaging, though. Since the background is busy throughout, it’d be easy to go overboard, but I think something a little less subtle than the heart tag with the word “by” would help draw the reader in. There’s ample use of iconography later in the IG, so maybe if some of that were brought up toward the beginning of the graphic, the viewer would be more inclined to keep looking.

The weight of the Most Romantic and Most Un-Romantic cities is also pretty heavy, since it’s given so much real estate on the design. I think if it were scaled back a touch, that would streamline the flow a bit.

Although there is some data visualization, it’s not utilized to its full potential for the most part. There are only 4 visualized data points/sets even though there’s tons of data, so I’d love to see it brought out a bit more!

In all I’d give this IG a B-. It’s got the idea down — it could just use some more charts, graphs, etc.

This graphic boasts truly eye-catching design, organization and aesthetic. The illustrations feel at-home within the design and the colors stay harmonious throughout, too. Text is kept way down so it’s simple to navigate through this quickly and get all the key information. The only place it gets a bit out of control is the “Cash Flow Management” section.

I wonder about the drop-down “NO” and “YES” for each question in “Have You Got What it Takes?” Typically that would be used if it were a pathway or “choose your own adventure” type of thing… but none of the yesses or nos feed directly into anything else, so it just winds up looking a little needlessly busy in that section.

This is more a guide than it is an infographic, so grading it as one would be unfair. As a tool for those looking to start a business, and as a graphic design, I’d give it an A-. But since there are very few numbers and no data viz, it isn’t a traditional infographic, so I’d give it a C- on that front. More business stats would boost that factor.

In all an enjoyable graphic with refreshing design sense, but again not what we would typically define as an infographic.

This has a lot of great information on what UK residents consider must-haves for the coolest possible house. Everything is covered, from pools to location to the style and size of house. The data is well-documented and it paints a great picture of domestic desires.

The iconography style is distinctive, clear and simple, so the graphic is easy to move through and you almost don’t need to read the subheadings to know what most of the answers are referring to. However, I’d like to see more emphasis on data visualization. It looks like an attempt was made in the first section to show that the circle containing “43%” is bigger than that containing “30%”, but the trend doesn’t seem to be continued in the Type section. Making a very clear differentiation in size, proportional to each percent, would really help the viewer. It seems to be best illustrated in “We expect to have our dream house at”.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B-, because it stays light on text and is all data, but the data visualization aspect doesn’t seem fully realized.

BrightonSEO is one of the best and most loved conferences in the UK. This incredible free event boasts a selection of high-profile leading authority speakers and an element of fun thrown into the day. BrightonSEO commissioned a souvenir poster as a keepsake for speakers and VIP guests. Only a limited edition of 50 prints were made but you can see a digital version here. The infographic outlines the growth of the conference and the historic venue of The Dome in Brighton.

I really like the overall aesthetic of the infographic, though a background other than white would be nice. There is a lot of good data here that illustrates the event. I love the stat about the event selling out faster than Justin Bieber, and the roller coaster chart for 3900% growth is so cute! I’d love to see more actual data visualization like that chart in order to break up all the text in the graphic.

It’s short and sweet, which is important for an infographic that aims to hold the viewer’s attention, but there is so much packed into the small space that it still winds up looking a bit overwhelming. One of the reasons I like the roller coaster chart so much is that that’s where my eye goes–it’s the most unique element, aside from the pier skyline.

Overall I would give this a B-, though, because of the packed appearance and a few missed opportunities for data viz. Adding another few hundred pixels to the length would really help this breath more so that the viewer could really absorb the information. It’s all there, it’s just hard to digest!

This infographic comes from Simply Business.

I really like the theme of this IG. It’s a very simple design, even though there is so much information being displayed. It really serves as a great snapshot way to get an idea of the breakdown of private employment in the United Kingdom, and the way the colors are balanced with an unobtrusive background is visually appealing. I’ll give it a B- for the following reasons:

I understand the temptation to leave the IG completely simple, with just three nice sections of data viz, but I skim right over the written facts in favor of the graphs. Some of these stats could be easily visualized in smaller graphs, so that the simplicity of the infographic isn’t compromised but the text is minimalized.

The dimensions on this are also not ideal. At 1400 pixels across, it’s wider than it is long, and that means viewers can’t see the whole horizontal span of the IG at full size. Infographics are best kept to widths of 1000 pixels maximum; then they can be as long as they want, as vertical scrolling is much more user friendly.

Fixing these minor issues can make this a pretty great infographic.
