This infographic about the dangers of teen driving comes to us from the folks at Lyslaw.

I really like the top half of this infographic. It shows the top ten driving distractions as if the viewer is sitting in the front seat of a car. I think this is a really creative way to do this on an infographic; it grabs the reader’s attention and keeps things interesting.

I give this an overall grade of C+. The bottom half of this could use a lot more data visualization, because as it is there is mainly text describing all of the data. For example, the statistic that 56 percent of drivers make or answer phone calls while driving could have a picture of someone talking into a phone to represent this statistic more visually, even without actual data viz. All of the other statistics on that list could do something along the same lines. I do like the 12.6 little silhouettes that are shaded in to show that teens are responsible for 12.6 percent of fatal crashes.

The top illustration is really nice, with lines leading from items and areas of the car to point out the top ten driving distractions. It is clear from what the lines are pointing to what the major distractions both in and outside the car are. I have just a couple minor suggestions for this area of the infographic. There are some distractions on the list that don’t have anything to represent them in the illustration; I would suggest adding something like a question mark next to the unknown distractions caption. Another small suggestion I have is to make the yellow lines bolder or somehow stand out more because there are a few spots in the picture where they blend in with the background.

I really like the creativity of this infographic and it has some good data visualization. It could just use a few additions to certain aspects of it and I would give this a B.

each year. Using cell phones while driving is an enormous problem and if we do not raise awareness and do something to stop it, the number of people killed or injured as a result of driving distracted will only increase every year. Make people aware of the dangers of distracted driving by sharing this infographic with your friends and family.”

The design on this infographic is really clean and inviting. The color palette is nice and really stands out from the asphalt gray background. (Nice touch on the death dice, by the way.) The dashboard visualizations for age ranges and fatalities/injuries are well-executed and effective examples of data viz, as is the bar graph about the types of vehicles involved in incidents of cell phone distraction.

The “types of distractions” section is a little confusing, only because there is data viz throughout the infographic, and the bars coming out from each light are different lengths. This cause me to momentarily confuse the image with a bar graph, and I thought it was trying to illustrate that more external distractions cause crashes than internal, and both more than inattention (which, by the way, is spelling incorrectly on the IG). But really, it seems that they’re only different lengths because of the lengths of the words. Just something to consider.

This infographic does a very good job of balancing negative space with info, and not including too much text. It tells its story, gets it across in a comprehensible way, and doesn’t waste time. Overall I’d give it an A-. Great job!

This infographic was submitted by the O’Sullivan Law Firm and covers 60 years of traffic safety in the US. Upon submitting the infographic, the company had this to say about it:

This infographic shows the decrease in traffic fatalities over the last 60 years. It cleverly overlays the data from the 2009 NHTSA report with related milestones from the last sixty years. These include safety improvement, laws, political initiatives and regulation of the auto industry. While there has been no study about why fatal accidents have gone down, this infographic suggests (and suggests) that there is a direct correlation between the regulation of things like seat belts, BAC limits and airbags. All of these factors have certainly helped push highway fatalities to a 60 year low. The infographic also includes a portrayal of the sharp decrease just from 2009 to 2009 on an number of important and relevant data from the accident report.

Overall the infographic is well designed with some very good data points. The only big change I would suggest is for the O’Sullivan Law Firm to take more credit for their work. Even when the infographic is blown up to full size, it still is hard to see the copyright information. Infographics are a great brand building tool and there’s no shame in putting your company logo on something you’ve created… especially since someone else might want to claim credit for your work if you don’t.
