This infographic comes to us courtesy of the folks at BookRenter. Right off the bat it’s easy to tell what this IG is all about – saving money on textbooks by renting instead of buying. Unfortunately, the first group of figures we see is a missed opportunity – there’s good information here (how much you can save over the life of your degree, etc.), but it’s done in words – not images. Data visualization is the name of the game for infographics.

As we go down the images, we get more data viz – piles of money represent savings as more and more students switch from buying textbooks to renting them. Another missed opportunity for data visualization is the “With $2,628 dollars you could…” section, where they talk about all the things you could do with the money you saved. I would have liked to see pictures of everything (the Ford Fiesta, the MLB tickets, etc.). All in all, I’d give the infographic a C – the data is good, and the data visualization (where it can be found) is pretty good too, but there’s just not enough of it.
