This infographic was submitted to us by Sinotech.

I love all the illustration and iconography on this infographic, and am glad to see some data viz scattered throughout. I especially like the final chart. The organization is clear and the layout is easy to follow. There isn’t too much text, but there is a fair amount of white space, so it does take awhile to scroll through the entire infographic.

The detailed illustrations of medical devices are really interesting to look through (though I’m dying to know what all the numbers on the Medical Analyzer are!), and they provide a nice visual break from the aesthetic of the rest of the infographic.

There are a few instances where I wish data visualization had been employed, such as the sleep apnea sufferer’s likelihood of car accidents, strokes, and heart disease (maybe 6 of the car icons, 4 of the brain icons and 3 of the hearts?) and “The risk of DVT is 8 times higher for patients who are hospitalized.” The more work the illustrations and icons can do to explain the information, the better!

In all I’d give this infographic a B+ — it’s clean and easy to understand, and iconography and data viz are used to the infographic’s benefit. All I would work on is condensing the space a bit (making the numbers of each medical advance smaller could save space) and utilizing data viz whereever it’s applicable.

This infographic was submitted to us by Reedman Toll.

I like the background imagery and the cute little pig icons used for numbering the ways to save! This graphic also features some great tips for cheap/free tech tools.

However, the problem here is that the graphic is just text chunks and icons. Any numbers that are given aren’t visualized with charts, graphs, pictograms, etc. and the text isn’t broken up much — even three consecutive lines of text can look heavy on an infographic. Infographics should rely primarily on imagery to carry the story, but the viewer has to read to get most of the information. The use of logos, though, does a good job of letting the viewer know instantly what the 10 tools are; it’s just that we have to read to get the rest of the info.

In all, I’d love to see design incorporated more into the use of numbers, and see the text reduced and dispersed a little more. That would improve the speed at which a viewer can process the infographic, and the likelihood they’ll stick around to absorb all of the info. I’d also like to see a concluding statement or call to action to tie up and summarize.

I’d give this infographic a C, since it needs a bit of tweaking to maximize its efficacy.

This infographic was submitted to us by SmallCellLungCancer.net.

I like the simplicity of the data viz and the high-contrast icons representing healthcare apps here. The concise summaries of each healthcare app make that whole section appealing. The extremely thorough timeline on the side is also pretty intriguing, and I like the color coding by century.

Ultimately, there is far too much text on this infographic. The way that the timeline is squeezed into a narrow space on the left makes it look more text-heavy than it is, because some years take up three or four lines. The Advances in Medical Technology section could also use some pruning. It’s difficult to get someone looking at infographics to sit and read it. One of the benefits of infographics is that they can be taken in quickly, because text is kept to a minimum. Perhaps the infographic could have been made wider to give the visual effect of less text.

There are only two points of data viz on the infographic, and I’d love to see more. I’m also a little confused by the pie chart blended with the bar graph–what’s the significance of their proximity? They seem to be categorically different, as though they need two different headings.

Lastly, the title isn’t actually a question, but it’s punctuated with a question mark. (“How Has Technology…” would be a question.) Proofreading is always an important step of putting anything “out there,” whether online or in print.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It’s got data viz, but the text needs trimming and the overall design needs ingenuity. When someone can take in all the information in closer to 1 minute, it’ll be ready. For now, the reading takes longer than that.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at PGI. They also included this description:

“This infographic shows technology trends over the past two decades. One side represents changes in technology regarding our personal lives, while the right side represents changes regarding the workplace. Ever since email revolutionized the workplace in 1990, many products like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and iMeet have altered the way people live and interact with others.”

I like the style and organization of this timeline, allowing for more event descriptions as we descend into the future. It has some interesting points in tech history–such as when the number of text messages exceeded the number of phone calls. The color scheme is simple, but at least it isn’t overbearing.

Ultimately, this isn’t an infographic–it’s a timeline. There are many opportunities for data viz here, and they’re all missed. It’s informative, but not visually oriented. You have to read to get any information out of this, and there are so many statistics and facts that are only represented by text, when they could easily be turned into charts and graphs.

In order for this to work as an infographic, a lot of the types of data would need to be shifted. It could either remain a timeline with more data viz worked in to each year, or there could be a separate section dedicated to statistics.

Also, there are no sources listed for this infographic. This means anyone wanting to check up on the information would have to do their own search, and it’s hard to tell where the researchers got their data. It’s generally good to show your sources to give your research more credibility.

Overall I’d have to give this a D as an infographic, since there is no data viz. If many of the numbers were turned into visuals, the design was amped up and the sources were given, this could get up to a B or more!

This infographic was submitted to us by Duo Consulting.

This is really basic and doesn’t cover much ground, so it’s hard to review as it is. An infographic is intended to tell a story, and this one is really too short to do that. What do we know after reading this? We know that drupal modules have increased quite a bit (and rapidly) in the last 4 years, and we know roughly how many were created in each category each year. But do we have an explanation of drupal modules? Do we have statistics on how they improve organization, performance, or anything of the sort?

This is more of a snapshot–one section of what should be a larger infographic. It isn’t complete and it’s pretty basic. As it is I’d give it a C-, because at least it’s focused on data viz. It needs a design and font boost, waaay more data, and a story to tell. When there is a more comprehensive view of the topic, this could be a useful infographic for interested parties.

Since infographics are typically designed for web use–though there are exceptions where they might be made for print–it only makes sense that there should be plenty of them about technology. This week we decided to dig up some that have been submitted to us in the past and compile them into one handy post. We look at some bygone eras in technology history, from the first mobile OS to the technological threats that endanger our use of the web. We also examine digital learning, how social technologies can be used within a business, B2B and B2C, and how the movie and tech industries function together. Take some time to learn a little more about tech today. Click any image to view the entire infographic.

Technology Enhances Learning

For those wondering whether the internet and computers are corrupting our youth, we direct you to this infographic showing that teachers (those people with experience in teaching our children) find great value in using the tools of technology in the classroom. If ever you find yourself asking “is our children learning?” you can derive great comfort from the fact that yes, they is indeed learning, and they is doing it on computers now. (Cheers to those who picked up the Dubya reference.) It seems that 57% of teachers feel digital learning is assisting student learning, while only 6% feel that textbooks are engaging. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the back problems kids get from carrying 40-pound backpacks to class.

Social Technologies

Social technologies can be used in several aspects of business–it isn’t limited to marketing. This infographic details how departments like HR and IT use social tech for time tracking and recruitment, while on the customer side you’d find more familiar approaches like surveys, sentiment analysis, competitor insight tools and more. Smartly divided between inside and outside business, this graphic, while lacking data viz, does provide insight into the various uses for the myriad social tech tools at our disposal.

The Evolution of Mobile Operating Systems

Can you remember back, all the way back to 1996? A time before tablets, iPhones, Facebook and even Y2K? Well, mobile operating systems were in development even way back then. That was the year the Palm OS launched, followed annually by Palm OS 2.0 and Palm OS 3.0. In the beginning, it was just Palm and Microsoft’s Pocket PC. Blackberry didn’t even enter the scene until 2005, swiftly followed by Android, iPhone, Symbian, Samsung, and a wave of evolutions following the establishment of these. This infographic takes you down techie memory lane and back into the dark ages, so to speak.

American Movie vs. Tech Industry (or, Love Bytes)

While this seems to begin as a rivalry, it really ends up as an analysis of two independent industries who have begun to grow together. Sure, the tech industry makes nearly 23 times more than the movie industry, but a lot of technology is focused around visual media–portable DVD players, tablets and iPhones that play video, TV screens in seat backs on airplanes and in cars… they’re quite intertwined. Besides, tech also provides solutions to the otherwise potentially unsolvable problems posed by imaginative screenwriters. This infographic shows the rise of the geek (as portrayed in cinema) from super lame to superhero and back down a little closer to earth.

Threat Morphosis: The Shifting Motivations Behind Digital Threats

Similar to the mobile operating systems infographic, this IG takes us back into the birth of tech threats. Who doesn’t have fond memories of the Love Letter worm of 2000? Back then, who wouldn’t want to open an e-mail proclaiming love, right? My, how times have changed. Four years later, 37,000,000 files were infected in one year, and from 2005 to 2008, Trend Micro saw a 2,135% jump in threats on the internet. Now we are cautious surfers of the world wide web, constantly on alert for new horrors and updating our anti-virus, anti-malware anti-anti software. Where might online threats be heading next?

Thanks for checking out these techie IGs. Keep up with us as we review new infographics, report on IG news and more!

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Sortable.com.

There’s a pleasing purple throughout this graphic, and the variations in size and typeface keep the information engaging throughout. There are lots of really interesting facts and stats here, and they’re pretty well organized. It’s fascinating to see the impact that this brand has overseas, in a country where the phones are produced but largely unaffordable. I like the relative ambiguity of the background image–it provides enough visual interest but isn’t distracting. In fact, sometimes very plain backgrounds on IGs are more distracting than patterned ones! That logo dispute at the bottom is pretty interesting too; does Apple really have a problem with all images that even sort of look like an apple?

While there is plenty of great information here, none of it is visualized. There’s lots of text and numbers but no charts or graphs. Viewers have to do more reading than looking, which isn’t ideal for an infographic. Since the size of text varies throughout, the designer could use that to his/her stylistic advantage while employing data viz at the same time. Right now, the size variation seems to be purely aesthetic. The largest statistic is the 27 suppliers who allegedly have serious pollution problems–but 27 is definitely not the highest number here. (This would be easier if there were more comparative data–maybe versus Microsoft or other tech giants?)

On a technical note: 70B$ should be $70B.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C+. It’s got really good data, but without visualization it’s just not truly an infographic. Some revision in this area would make this fantastic.

This smart infographic was submitted to us by the folks at E2Save.com.

Full of the kind of information that’s stunning but not-so-stunning at the same time (because we all know how bad the smartphone addiction really is!), this infographic drives home a lot of important points. It’s amazing that well over half of men in the United States own a smartphone–I’m frankly surprised the number isn’t comparable for women. There’s a bunch of useful data in here and the design, colors and structure of this infographic are pretty nice.

Most of the numbers are just that, though–numbers. Opportunities for visualization are missed or slightly confusing. Take the “using phones on the toilet” example. I understand that to convey the difference between an adult stick figure and a teen stick figure, you’d make the teen smaller. However, 47% of teens have used their phone on the toilet, compared to just 22% of adults. That makes the adult being larger a little problematic, because it could be mistaken for data viz. Maybe solve the size issue by making the toilet that the teen is on proportionally bigger? Or make a pie chart in a toilet bowl. There are some fun possibilities here.

Another big problem is the lack of listed sources, or the company that commissioned the infographic and the company that designed it. Without a list of sources, viewers may assume the numbers came out of nowhere–and they won’t be able to verify the information for themselves. And without your company name somewhere on the infographic, you’re likely to have problems with misuse and improper linkbacks.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C+. It’s well on its way, but doing something more inventive with the statistical data and making sure to cite your sources are very important for infographics.

This new infographic from Good.is shows the responses of many teachers after being asked to gauge the effectiveness of various forms of education materials. The purpose of asking the questions was to prove that traditional textbooks may not be the best way to educate today’s student. Instead, the world of education should look into other means of education through technology, to better relate to a tech-savvy student body.

The infographic shows a variety of statements and answers which are as follows:

Classroom magazines and books other than textbooks help my students’ academic achievement: the majority of teachers agreed with this statement

Traditional textbooks help my students’ academic achievement: the majority of teachers thought this was somewhat true

Digital resources such as classroom technology and web-based programs help my students’ academic achievement: Almost all teachers agreed with this one

Traditional textbooks engage my students in learning: Very few teachers agreed with this statement

Digital resources such as classroom technology and web-based programs engage my students in learning: The majority of teachers agreed with this statement

Classroom magazines and books other than textbooks engage my students in learning: the majority of teachers agreed with this statement

All in all, the information in this infographic is quite interesting, though I’m not sure an infographic was necessary to display this data.
