This infographic was submitted to us by Bet Victor.

This has several elements commonly seen in infographics: timelines, a “by the numbers” section, profiles of key players in the subject, and assorted fun facts. There are lots of great numbers throughout the IG (£6 prize?! Old school!) so you learn a lot about the game in a short amount of time.

Because there are so many numbers here, I’d love to see some data visualization incorporated! £6? How about 6 £1 notes? 12 finals won by Scottish players? 12 Scottish flags! That takes some of the reading out of the infographic, and makes it even quicker and more intuitive for the viewer. This infographic does feature a fair amount of text (the timeline being the most crowded example), so any opportunities to cut down on text should be integrated into a great infographic.

Still, the overall aesthetic remains playful, colorful, and lively, so it’s fun to move from section to section. The design also manages to incorporate illustration elements with photos, and it isn’t too jarring — sometimes this combination can be awkward.

In all I would give this infographic a B-. It contains a lot of good data, but could rely less on text to convey its info — telling stories with images is one of the key functions of a great infographic.

This infographic was submitted to us by Ladbrokes.

There are a couple of good examples of data visualization on this infographic, and I like that it stays short and sweet. Viewers get a lot of key info about Transfer Day without having to swim through a lot of extra text. The background texture, of course, makes sense for the topic, and the fonts stay consistent so that they aren’t distracting.

I’d like to see the use of data viz stay consistent, however. When I started in on the graphic, I thought that the dollar amounts in the Top-5 Biggest Premier League Signings would be represented as bar graphs relative to the signing amounts of the other players — but it turned out that £8.5 million was longer than £10 million. It would have been a good opportunity to weight the figures against one another.

The same is true for the key Twitter terms surrounding the Transfer Window. The number 165,570 is about as big as 407,215, and I think the font size of the keyword itself (QPR, with 165,570 tweets) is actually larger than the keyword with more tweets (David Beckham, with 407,215 tweets).

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It makes use of data viz, it isn’t too long, and it’s pretty clean in design. It would just be great to see data viz used to its full potential! And don’t be afraid to get creative with it too: there are more than just bar graphs out there.

This infographic was submitted to us by StowAway2.

There’s a lot of good information here and a great amount of hard statistics! It’s surprising to see how many tailgaters arrive several hours before the game to set up and get cooking, especially considering 1 in 3 of them never even enter the game! I’m going to guess that live streams and portable TVs are common for this reason — it would be nice to see some stats on how tailgaters prefer to watch the game when it’s broadcast.

The organization/layout is a little cramped, so it’s hard to decide what to look at first. There isn’t a lot of breathing room to let each stat stand out on its own. A little more negative space would benefit the design.

I understand the reasoning for the colors, but they come out a little garish on my screen. Of course, that’s different for almost everyone, but it gets hard to look at after awhile.

I love the football design for Top 10 College Tailgating Destinations. Very clever! And the positives and negatives of each type of cargo carrier will help outfit any tailgater.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B — it’s got great stats and info but could use a little bit of rethinking on organization and possibly color scheme.

What is the most attended sports league in the world?

Ever wondered what is the most attended sports league in the world is? How about the domestic sporting event that attracts the highest attendace? Today on the blog, we give you some numbers that might help you win a bet at your local pub this weekend.

This is a great list of stats. It’s interesting to see what really are the most popular leagues by sheer audience numbers, though I am surprised that MLB ranks #1 as soccer/football is known as the world’s most popular sport. It seems that folks really come out for the big soccer games, but not as much during the season?

While this is a great set of stats that is set up in an easy-to-read format, the designer didn’t take a chance on visualizing any of the data. This means that we have to read to get the information, rather than just glancing at it. A bar graph could show us proportionally just how many more audience members the MLB’s 73,451,522 attendance is versus the runner-up Nippon Professional Baseball at just 21,679,596. As it is, we have to imagine, or do some calculations to see that that’s over 50,000,000 fewer attendees, or just 29% of MLB’s turnout.

I’d love to see these numbers visualized to make their impact even stronger. Until then, I can’t properly rank this as an infographic. It gets an A for interesting data, though!

This Football Financial Crisis Infographic was submitted to us by TrophyStore.co.uk

The infographic starts off strong, with two good examples of data visualization and a nice variety of color. (There is an awful lot of text under Football & The Money Men, though.) The League of Debt, however, is a color-coded list of numbers–it’d be so nice to see all these numbers as bar charts, stacks of money or some other sort of visual.

Club’s Main Source of Revenue is a great example of using data viz to really quickly convey information. Right away you see that TV and Broadcasting make up the bulk of the revenue. Same with the wage explosion–a really nice timeline and line graph in one, clearly illustrating the wage discrepancies. But again, under Best Paid Footballers, we get a list of numbers, with no visual way to compare who makes more, and how much more. The IG ends again on a strong note with a graphed comparison of the clubs that make the most money.

It seems that the design shies away from including “too much” data viz–no need! We’ll get through the IG a lot faster if there’s more of it. The other biggest problem is the text–Football & The Money Men is the heaviest spot, but The League of Debt could be trimmed, too. The huge size difference between the title and the text makes the eye just want to skip over “the fine print.”

Overall I’d give this IG a B-. It’s got great data viz when it’s there, but could use a little boost to make it even better. And if we could just boost the money-making power of more footballers and football clubs, maybe we could see some more Football Trophies too!

This infographic was submitted by Spring Creek Group. They also provided this description:

“The Cardinals of St. Louis are the champions of the baseball world. This #WorldSeries was one of the most social media heavy sporting events to date. Fueled by our childhood love of baseball cards, we put together this stat-filled card which looks at how the Fall Classic played out on Twitter. Feel free to share (and stick it in the spokes of your Schwinn).”

There is clever design on the top portion of this infographic, using an image of one man to host three different points of data viz. (Somehow the basketball-sized baseball works for me.) It’s got a pretty clear focus, too.

However, the way that the text is laid out (very few words per line) makes it look like there is more text than there is, and since the infographic is so short, it needs to look data-driven. (Since it’s about baseball in general, it could stand to have a lot more data.)

The baseball pie chart could use some cleaning up, too–in particular, the dotted trails the viewer has to follow to find the player each percentage represents. It’s redundant to list the percentages again if you have a line linking the name to the chart–but the lines seem a bit cluttered, anyway. Perhaps if the illustrated man’s hand was coming forward, maybe to catch the baseball, then the chart could be bigger (because the ball would be seen as closer to the viewer) and player names could go right on the pie chart with the percentages.

Then the line graph below is a bit confusing. A quick Google search showed that rain delayed Game 6 of the World Series on October 26, which would explain the rain drop… but one shouldn’t have to Google things to understand what they are on an infographic. A brief description, such as “rain delay,” would have helped. (It’s surprising there weren’t more tweets that day–I would think baseball fans would be tweeting up a storm, so to speak, about the delay of an important game like that!)

Overall I’d give this a C–it’s okay, but it does need some work to make it great.

I like the texture of this infographic–it feels like a vintage pair of jeans, or maybe golf pants! The background color is nice and reminiscent of a sunny day on the golf course. If only all golf games could take place in the sunshine, right? I love that all of the information is hovering in an enormous sky over a golf course. The golf ball and tee emblem at the top seems to be floating through the air, as though someone might just tee off in mid-air. The information is well divided and organized, so it’s easy to follow.

There are many spelling and grammar errors in this infographic. For example, the first 1916 history fact is a huge run-on sentence. Also “diamond-studded gold metal” should be “gold medal.” (The history section is, in fact, only 2 pieces of information from 1916. I think that could be fleshed out a little more. There’s got to be more history to golf than just 1916 and present day.)

I don’t really understand the “Most Appearances” section–did Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer both have 37 appearances? And why are there arrows from this section down to score cards where neither name appears?

Most problematic is that the only real example of data visualization here is the candles representing each player’s age. Everything else is done in written numbers–things that are attempts at data viz, but are really just design elements. Score cards, numbers written on golf balls, $100 bills, and the like all represent and match what’s being talked about without putting the actual data into a chart, graph, or other tool. Data viz is essential for all infographics, and for this reason and those listed above, I have to give this infographic a D.

This infographic was submitted by AFL.com, who said this:

“All you need to know about the AFL’s Brownlow Medal is contained in this infographic: Find out how many Brownlows your club has won, what the most prevalent guernsey number for the winners is, triple Brownlow winners and more.”

This IG looks pretty sharp. The design is clean and everything is pretty easy to interpret (with the exception of the logos, which I’ll get to in a bit). It seems to have all the stats someone might want to know about the Brownlow. I love that the background is dark, mainly because of the black cat–I think it’s an awesome effect that the cat almost fades into the background.

There are a few issues with the data viz here. In the first graph, Number of Brownlows Won Per Club, we see that the club with the most Brownlows, South Melbourne/Sydney Swans, won 14. Then there are some bar values for the other clubs… but there are no axes or labels or anything to show how many the other clubs won! All we really know is, it’s less than 14. For the most prevalent guernsey numbers, it would’ve been cool to stretch out the uniforms on a modified bar graph to represent the number of times they’ve been used, instead of just writing it out. The very bottom statistic (the first Brownlow winner received 7 votes) does a great job of taking something that might’ve just been a number and turning it into data viz–but there are so many other spots where that isn’t done. The Club Brownlow Total Votes bar graph is excellent, though.

On a general note, maybe it’s just my unfamiliarity with the club logos, but even still I think the logos could’ve been a little larger throughout. It does present a design problem because there are up to 18 logos on one graph, so maybe if they were large enough at the top to be read, it could serve as sort of a key for the smaller logos throughout.

Overall, I’d give this infographic a B-. It’s got a good design, good dimensions and good flow, as well as some excellent models for data viz, but there are many places where data viz should’ve been employed and it wasn’t. Adding more of that will turn this into a great infographic!

This infographic comes to us from Sherdog.com.

This has a lot of elements of a good infographic. The design is clean and consistent, the color scheme is well thought out for its topic and background color, it’s practically nothing but data viz, and the information is accessible, even to outsiders of the sport. I like the way the graphs have been designed, so that even when there isn’t something as clean-cut as a 1-10 value (such as Strikes Landed Per Minute), you can see who’s the leader in that field. Cain Velasquez’s bar is full at 7.05, so I can gather that no one else on the IG will have more than 7.05 strikes landed per minute.

Pretty much my only issue is with the final stat about Twitter followers. I like that it’s there; it speaks to the popularity of the fighters and ties in to the demographic of people who will likely be viewing the IG: UFC fans who use the internet/social media. However, it’s really the only data of its type in the infographic. I’d love to see it supported by some Facebook fan page info, or maybe some sample tweets from each of the fighters. I’m also curious if none of the other fighters listed have Twitter accounts? I understand the logic behind a list of the top 3, but since we have so much info about every fighter in the rest of the infographic, I’d like to know about all of them. It would also provide a chance to change up the style one last time, since the individual fighter stats are a large chunk of the IG.

That being said, I’d give this infographic an A-. This is pretty darn good, so regarding the Twitter stat: should it stay or should it go? It could either be taken out or expanded upon, depending on what the company wants.
