This infographic was submitted to us by Satellite Broadband ISP, who also provided this description:

Facebook has been around since many of the people who use it can remember. For me, it was right around the time I was beginning college and I couldn’t wait to get a college email so that I could use it.

…

Now how does Facebook compare to Myspace and some of the other internet giants that have come before it? Could they end up like Myspace? If so, who’s next to take over?

This infographic takes a look at some of the internet giants that have come before Facebook, how they got started, where they are now and how they ended.

I like the concept of the topic — it does seem like Facebook has had some “staying power” in the Internet world, but at some point it’s got to go.

I don’t think the title accurately represents what’s shown here, though, because the bulk of the information is about other sites/services that have already tanked. So it’s not really about “who’s next” but what might happen to Facebook and what has already happened to others.

There’s not much to be said about the design here. The star-like background behind the title doesn’t seem to tie into anything, the bar graph is very basic (and uses three disparate fonts), and the companies described (Facebook, AOL, Yahoo!, MySpace, Friendster) are just haphazardly thrown in. Although it seems that “Challengers to the Facebook Throne” is meant to be the conclusion, my eye didn’t find it that readily — I was trying to figure out which bulleted list to read first, instead.

This infographic would really benefit from a more descriptive title, better organization, more unique design elements, and proofreading. There are lots of inconsistencies in capitalization and punctuation as well as spelling errors. In an ideal scenario, an infographic will be shared across blogs, publications, and social media outlets all over the web — with the company’s name right on there at the bottom. If it’s unattractive and unpolished, it doesn’t present a good image for the company. That’s why attention to design and detail are so critical.

I’d have to give this infographic a D. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t drawn in by the design, I wasn’t clear on what the information would be about, and I couldn’t get past all the typos.

This Halloween-themed infographic about social media comes to us from the people at Shoutlet.

I really like the spooky theme and overall design of this infographic. It is a great creative way to look at social media at this time of year and tie it in with what people think is scary about using social media.

The grade that I give this as an infographic is a C- because it is very text heavy and readers have to get most of the information from reading. Because of all the text there is not a whole lot of data visualization present in this. It looks really nice and there are some cool graphics that go with the theme but they do not help to present the data in a visual way. For example, the section with the crows on a wire and all the speech bubbles looks really good, but every piece of information is in the text.

It would add a lot if there were graphics to go with the data that is in text. One area that could be improved easily is the section about what the worst spooky character at social media would be. The addition of an illustration of each type of spooky creature would add some visualization to go with the percentages. The same goes for the section about what horror movie social media is most like; pictures of the movie villains or characters would add some visualization.

I do really like the humor and the theme of this infographic. It takes some serious data and some not-so-serious data and mixes it together in a creative and interesting way. With some additional graphics and less text the data visualization would be improved a lot and I could give this a higher grade.

This infographic comes to us from the folks at EtonCorp, who provided this description:

“Mother Nature rules the world. Occasionally, she decides to remind us of that, and usually not too subtly. Natural disasters affect many people across the US (and the world) each year. However, with the ever-growing and changing world of social media, we can try to reduce the negative affects those disasters have on us.”

The chart showing which sectors of the United States government use varying forms of social media is very well done and serves its purpose of providing a snapshot comparison quite well. The design of the infographic is also very nice–it hearkens to social media with the icon-like depictions of each natural disaster and the items in the emergency preparedness kit. I love the way the title is designed–completely clever, appropriate for the subject, and with a great attention to detail.

However, this graphic is mostly text. Since it’s trying to provide tips more than it is displaying facts and statistics, this makes sense, but a good infographic keeps the text to a minimum. The very first chart, Types of Natural Disasters, could’ve benefited from an accompanying bar graph comparing the number of fatalities. Same thing for the number of Tweets and Facebook page “likes” for the earthquake and Irene. With a few more disasters for comparison, those numbers could’ve been put to great data viz use. Visuals wherever possible!

Overall I’ll give this infographic a C. It’s got a start on data viz, and the design is great, but there’s still an awful lot of text and tips in proportion to the amount of stats made into visualization.

This infographic comes to us from PRMarketing.com.

Here is part of the description that the folks at PR Marketing wrote:

“People will not be drawn to your company or brand unless they feel like it applies to them. Marketing is changing with the internet, and now that people can find a company just like yours with a click of a button it is more important than ever to woo your users. It’s about being relevant, interesting, and accessible to your customers. It’s about being transparent, or at least appearing transparent to the internet. If you are going to compete in today’s market you have to be likable, and social media is by far the best way to achieve that goal.”

I really like the color palette and flow of this graphic. The way each box and graphic runs into one another provides it with a nice natural rhythm that guides the eye down–you want to keep searching for what’s coming next. “Be Unprofessional” is a nice unexpected tip that ties in with “Be Honest”–marketing that feels like marketing isn’t a great strategy with the modern crowd.

However, white backgrounds are not ideal–they’ll blend in with the background on many websites that might host the IG. Most importantly, while this is a visually attractive way to spruce up a list, inclusion of graphics plus information does not an infographic make. It isn’t information that can really be effectively visualized. This graphic provides tips and tricks, but no concrete data.

This unfortunately means that this isn’t truly an infographic, and with no data viz I would have to give it a D on the grading scale. The dimensions are fine and the layout and design are nice, but the information is completely in text form, with no data to back up the statements. A little research thrown in, so that the tips (shortened, please) are just one factor in a larger infographic about social media strategies, would help this reach its potential.

>

Aspen submitted this infographic for us.

The aesthetic of this IG is pretty sleek. It sort of reminds me of social media sites–something about the font, the dark background, the pop of the colors, the little icons. The design is definitely themed, with a road map background, road signs, speedometers, etc. and the data is interesting. Who knew people talked about cars so much? Well, Aspen does:

“People love talking about their cars, whether a fuel-efficient sedan or expensive sports car. This passion and the sheer volume of conversations (an average of 2.4 million each day) creates a huge opportunity for automotive brands and businesses.”

(I found it pretty surprising that people talk about actually buying cars more frequently than they talk about wanting one. It’s not a critique; the data is there. Strange, though!)

There are a few big things holding this infographic back for me. The first and most obvious is the scale and orientation. IGs that are more than about 1,000 pixels wide mean people have to scroll horizontally; this one is nearly 3,000 pixels wide and 1,000 long, and that’s a lot of scrolling in both directions. The second major issue is that the data isn’t really visualized. Percentages and stats are just stated numerically throughout.

Also, there’s some data thrown in that seems to be just filling up space. The Top 5 Keywords for every category are nearly identical, with minor differences like “concerned/concerning” and “fees/fee.” People aren’t going to keep reading repetitive information. The general Top Keywords section gets the point across just fine. The Contact Aspen info is the biggest single section on the whole IG, which is also pretty distracting.

Since the design of this IG is modern and engaging, it’s too bad to see data and data viz weren’t put to better use. Horizontal orientation is a big barrier, too. I’ll have to give this infographic a D. It’s a great start with some serious potential, but it needs work.

This infographic about wasted time in the workplace comes to us from the people at Biz 3.0.

I really like the overall flow of the data presented in this infographic and I give it an A. I think that the data is depicted in an easy to read way and many of the graphics used compliment the statistics nicely. I particularly like the graphics showing what people waste time on at work, such as the burgers for long lunch breaks and the suitcases for conducting personal business. The large graphic of a magnifying glass over a globe is a nice touch as well for representing internet monitoring by employers.

One thing that I don’t really like is the pie chart at the very top. I find it to be misleading because although the title of it is productivity loss, only one of the statistics provided actually has to do with productivity loss while the other statistic regards social media policy which is a topic dealt with later on in the infographic. I would rather see this pie chart have more statistics about productivity loss, or removed entirely.

Another strong feature of this infographic is the data about workplace use of email, the simple graphics of envelopes colored in with different shades are a good way to represent this data. I like the overall color scheme, the contrast between the blue and orange works well, and the few focal point graphics that pop out with different colors break up the monotony. One example of this is the chart of blacklisted websites that really stands out in the middle and uses nice logos from the actual sites.

This is a great infographic with a good balance between text and visuals. It flows well and presents statistics in a straighforward way with good data visualization.

This infographic comes to us from our friends at Viral MS.

There are a ton of Twitter infographics out there, most of which find a way to incorporate the Twitter brand or just birds in general. This one is particularly creative – I love all of the different types of birds and that the entire infographic is a tree in a little park. There is also a healthy amount of data visualization here. Overall, I give this a B.

The reason that this one didn’t earn an A is the lack of cohesion in the data. The design is pretty cohesive, but this just seems to be a list of random facts about Twitter. An good infographic should tell a story, and this one really doesn’t – it seems to be a bit all over the place. A way to improve this would be to stick to the “Twitterpalooza” theme and include facts that refer to excess or abundance of things related to Twitter, such as the stat for the tweets per second record and more about how many users there are, how much Twitter is worth, it’s rapid growth in the past few years, etc.

Another suggestion I have is for the pie chart towards the end – the yellow fonts are difficult to read and the labels are placed haphazardly around the pie chart instead of near the sections of the pie that they correspond to. That way, the chart will be a lot easier to look at for the reader.

Lastly, the full-size version of this is way too large. Shrinking the width down to 1000 pixels will keep it at a reasonable, readable size without forcing the user to scroll in multiple directions in order to view the entire thing. Overall, this is a great Twitter infographic. I love all of the different little birds (some of them are so cute!) and the design is interesting and creative.

This infographic was submitted to us by Lab42. Here is what they had to say about their infographic:

Just a few years ago, professional networking meant printing off your resume, attending job fairs, and scheduling coffee dates with old co-workers or friends of friends who could help you land your next dream job. That has all changed with LinkedIn. Now you can publicly display your resume, easily interact with industry professionals, and discover that your new boss is connected to your favorite college professor. And with its recent IPO, LinkedIn has been all over the news. After talking with my colleagues at Lab42 about our LinkedIn profiles, we were interested to find out exactly how other users were interacting with the site.

Overall, this infographic earns a B+. Having the design of the infographic be in the style of the LinkedIn website is a very good idea for this one. Using in-website boxes is a good idea for separating the sections, but it seems to all blend together and detracts from the flow of the infographic as a whole. The pie charts are unique without being too distracting, which is good. However, the icons in the center of the smaller pie charts make the section look a bit cluttered. Another issue are the section headings – using a more traditional, simple section heading as opposed to the tags would really help with the flow. They look cool, but since there is already so much going on in the infographic, they really aren’t necessary and in fact are a bit too much.

Overall, the infographic is good! With its sections identified a bit more clearly so that the organization and flow are more apparent, it could be great.

This infographic was submitted to us via The Fashion Spot.com. Here’s what they had to say about their infographic:

The Fashion Spot went in search of the answer to this burning question. For our tally, we ignored the power earners like Gisele and Kate Moss and sought out the most in-demand models dominating the runways, magazines, ad campaigns, and social media in the past year. Think you know who’s on top? See how your favorites measure up in the race for the top spot.

It is nice to see an infographic on a unique topic, and also to see a design that fits the topic perfectly. The runway images are incorporated very well into the infographic, as well as the Google search section. Using magazines for the bar graph is a nice, creative choice as well, and it looks fantastic, especially with the covers featuring the actual models. The “racking up miles” and “social security” sections looks great and fit in with the rest of the infographic, but it would be nice to see some bar graphs or another form of data visualization here. Other than that, this infographic is great – it is unique, concise, and has a great design that flows very nicely. Kudos to the designer!
