This infographic was submitted to us by Gavin de Becker & Associates.

There are a lot of good claims established here for why private security firms are coming up in the world. The simple layout and clean text makes navigating the infographic pretty easy, as there’s no clutter, no large text chunks, and nothing else appearing out of place. It’s a little plain (nothing especially unique or risky was attempted) so it doesn’t really draw me in visually, but in the same respect, it’s also definitely not gaudy or overdone.

The majority of numbers are visualized, which is great to see. I love the little icons for law enforcement vs. private security, and the color choice there is effective: gray for law enforcement (meant to be de-emphasized) and blue for “the good guys” (meant to be emphasized/presented positively). Sometimes it’s the subtle details that win people over – if I were choosing between law enforcement and private security, I’d probably be looking into private security careers. I definitely need some of those sunglasses.

I was surprised to learn that personal protection accounts for about half of all private security services. Guess it’s a good time to be a bodyguard!

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It utilizes data viz and concise text, but could use something a little flashy to make it stand out. Maybe the header/title would be the opportunity to do this.

This is really clear, concise, and effective. While it isn’t fantastically visually engaging, there are not that many points of focus to contend with, so it’s simple for the reader to get through this in about 30 seconds — perfect for the busy CTO.

We’re introduced to facts about how prevalent mobile devices are in business and how significant security risks can be. Then we get a hypothetical situation showing how the problem of device/data theft can be solved by geo-fencing. The messaging is clear and easily digestible.

The infographic also clearly presents its reputable sources and features the company’s logo without making the infographic or content itself a sales pitch. This is a great method for allowing viewers to link the data to your company without feeling like they’re having anything pushed on them.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s very quick and effective but just a bit more visual interest — a different colored or textured background, most detailed illustrations, etc. — would make me more likely to pick it out on a page as something I’d like to examine.

This is a wonderful example of converting the majority of your data into accessible visualizations The only necessary reading on this infographic is explaining a visualization, number or stat beyond what is shown. The biggest data breaches are impressive to look at, displayed nicely and definitely impart the severity of fraud. All the text serves a useful purpose and does not need to be cut out–though there are places it could be trimmed a little.

For example, in the “identity theft stays on top” section, some of the text tries to be professionally sort of verbose or fluffy, but brevity would be preferable. “The most common fraud committed is identity theft, accounting for nearly 20% of all reported 2010 cases” is 17 words, but can be shortened to something like “2010: 20% of frauds were identity theft, the most common fraud” which saves six words. It seems petty but it makes a difference.

I also wonder a little about the title, “The Biggest Security Breaches of All Time.” Only one section of the IG actually covers this–the rest is more generally about fraud and identity fraud. “The Reach of the Breach” is definitely cute, though!

Aside from these points, the color scheme is great, the data viz is sensible and effective, the design is clean and the copy is, too. This infographic is quite successful–I could even see it being expanded to cover identity theft and/or fraud in a broader, more thorough sense. In recognition of this great work I’d give this infographic an A-!
