This infographic was submitted to us by Ecommerce Partners, who also provided this description:

Do you want to increase sales, visitor retention, and customer satisfaction? One way to accomplish these goals is through a re-platforming of your ecommerce website. Selecting a new platform for your business can be confusing with so many options available. It is important to define your ecommerce strategy and goals, and then try to find the platform that best serves those needs. Take a look at this infographic for more tips on what to look for in an ecommerce platform, and whether re-platforming is right for you!

This graphic makes a lot of good points about its topic and features some cute illustrations. However, the illustrations aren’t driving the graphic: the text is. Since the viewer has to read their way through, it doesn’t really do the job that an infographic is meant to do. An infographic should tell a story with imagery wherever possible, keeping text to a minimum. This maximizes engagement in our visual world.

Unfortunately, this feels a bit like an article that was overlaid onto some background imagery, rather than an infographic. As mentioned, it needs to rely more heavily on illustration, data visualization, iconography — anything other than text blocks to tell its story. The text should play a more supplemental role.

There are also inconsistencies and typos. The word “e-commerce” is spelled several different ways throughout the IG, alternating capitalizations and occasionally featuring a hyphen. That’s a unique situation since everyone seems to have their own way to spell it, but it should be consistent within the image. Proofreading is a pretty important step to any final product, so be sure to triple-check your work.

Given this, it’s tough to grade this as an infographic. I’d have to give it a D for being almost exclusively text, unfortunately.

This infographic comes to us from TabJuice, who also submitted this brief description:

“We keep hearing how social commerce ‘is the next area to really blow up’ but details on how it will blow up are sparse. Take a look at this infographic to understand how social commerce can be utilized to leverage both of its users, brands and fans.”

This infographic is loaded with tips and statistics related to social commerce. It’s nice that it is targeted at both stores and consumers, so that everyone gets valuable information at the same place. The creation of a fake brand allowed the infographic to provide easy-to-understand examples for each tip.

A big problem with this infographic is that the tips are visualized, but the stats aren’t. (The exception is the prediction for social commerce growth at the base of the IG.) Statistics must be visualized in order to make an infographic truly an infographic. These visuals don’t all have to be so big as to throw off the existing design, though. The very first statistic–1 out of 13 people on Earth use Facebook–could be illustrated with 13 little people, and one in a different color to represent the Facebook user. They would fit in the space where the statistic is currently written. The other statistics could be done as bar graphs in those same spaces, if keeping the current design were determined to be vital to the success of the infographic. Of course, the brilliant thing about infographics is that you can give five designers the same data and they will all invent something uniquely different from the others.

Because the design is clean, the information is concise and relevant, and the copy is relatively error-free (with the exceptions of “BIG Annoucement” and the “XYZ Designs Veritgo Tee,” which I imagine is supposed to be “Vertigo”), this graphic has a leg up on some others. Still, data viz is essential to infographics, and for that reason I’d give this infographic a C- overall.

This infographic was submitted to us by ISACA, who included this description:

“This infographic compares IT managers/departments attitude towards BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), the riskiest activity an employee can do with company property (laptop, blackberry, etc) and employee use of corporate assets and time for work/life balance across 6 regions:

• North America
• Latin America
• Europe
• Asia
• Africa
• Oceania

ISACA is a non-profit global IT organization that provides education, certification and guidance to its IT professionals member base.”

There is an interesting comparison of office politics around the world here. I also appreciate that the IG is 100% data viz. There is no extraneous text, the information is concise and relevant, and the organization is quite simple.

I think it actually borders on too little text–without the description provided outside of the IG, the viewer may have no immediate way of knowing what ISACA does. That provides a necessary background for properly appreciating the information. The lack of text also makes some of the data confusing. I could use an extra few words telling me what the percentages on the highest-risk employee activity mean. Is that the percentage of employers who agree that losing/misplacing a work-supplied device is the highest-risk activity? Is it the number of businesses who experienced a lost or misplaced work-supplied device? Data that isn’t properly explained is just as ineffective as data that isn’t visualized.

It’s also a bit confusing that for each question, the responses are not the same. The second statistic about personal use is clear, because all the percentages represent “allow to promote work-life balance.” But the color-coding/varying answers on other questions is not so accessible. I puzzled over why, for example, we couldn’t see all the numbers for regions that saw more employee online shopping. Why do some have to show only the “more” numbers, while others show only the “about the same” numbers? If, say, only 12% of employers in North America saw a rise in employee online shopping, I’d like to see that compared with other “more” responses. The data seems harder to follow this way.

Overall I’d give this IG a B-. Just a bit more explanation would provide so much more clarity, making this infographic concise and effective.

“This infographic looks at just how much of an impact the pure play shopping retailers Asos has had on the internet, and demonstrates how far they have come in a short space of time. Using both revenue and traffic based data, this insightful infographic really breaks down the complexities behind the daily success of Asos.”

There are a couple things I really like about this infographic, including the data-visualization of countries in which Asos consumers reside. I thought it was creative how the designer used flags to mark the distribution of consumers. I also liked the timeline, which shows the history of the online retail store. The infographic does a good job of remaining relevant and telling a story about the company from start to finish. I also appreciated the introduction paragraph at the top- most IG don’t included them, but I find them really helpful, personally.

Although this infographic has some good qualities, there are also a few areas that could use some improvements. One potential quick fix is the background color. It is usually a good idea to stay away from white or black as a background color because they tend to blend into the background color of the website they get posted onto. Secondly, although this infographic contains a lot of relevant information, there is hardly any true data-visualization. They definitely included a lot of pictures, but not pictures that are representative of the data they are placed next to. One statistic that could be easily visualized is the one about how many Facebook fans and how many daily visits they receive.

Overall, I would give this infographic a C. It has some great aspects, but it also needs a few tweaks. With a different background color and some more data-viz, it could be great.

This infographic was submitted to us by Deals.org.uk and here is what they had to say about it:

“It might sound crazy to be publishing a Christmas infographic in September but believe it
or not, this is the month that many start their Christmas shopping. A leading UK
department store started their Christmas display back in July. All these facts and more
like the average amount spent per person each Christmas and the value of unwanted gifts
each year in the UK.”

I see a lot of positive elements in this infographic. Not only does it have some really intriguing facts, but it also has some nice data visualization. I particularly enjoy the graphics used for the statistic about the most popular day and time to shop online at work. One thing I would change about this graphic is how the sources are cited throughout. It would make a more cohesive design if the sources were left to be cited at the very end.

Also, the data about online shopping vs. attending church is visualized very nicely in this infographic. It also very data-driven and would make more sense than many if all the text was removed. The infographic has a cohesive design throughout, but the source icons take away from it and make it more confusing than it should be. Like I mentioned earlier, if all the sources were just cited at the bottom of the infographic, then it would be much more aesthetically pleasing.

As far as a letter grade, it would receive a B- from me. The data visualization, though better than many, could use some improvement. An infographic should still make sense when all text is removed and this one would fail to do that in several places. However, it has a nice layout and tells a story from start to finish, stating many interesting and relevant facts.

The holiday selling season has always been big for ecommerce, but never have we experienced something quite like this past year. Wondering just how big of a milestone we hit in 2010? For the first time in history, Cyber Monday lived up to its hype, finally overtaking the spot as the busiest selling day of the year. Want to see more about the wild and crazy history that led to this point? Check out this new infographic above.

All in all, the infographic is pretty decent for a first try from this company. I wish it had more data points and it could stand to be a bit larger so that the font is legible. For instance, this infographic can probably get to 650px wide, which would leave a lot more room for larger font. I do also wish the infographic utilized more imagery, but again, it’s a great first try as many companies don’t even do this well their first time.

This infographic comes to us from CreditCardsCanada.ca, which is a site that helps Canadians find the right credit card. The infographic covers the ins and outs of online shopping in Canada, which is timely considering the holidays are the busiest shopping time of the year, and in Canada, Boxing Day is one of the most popular times to shop online. The infographic states the following:

Consumers scaled back their spending during the global economic slowdown, but e-commerce continues to enjoy robust growth. E-tailers are gearing up for the 2010 holiday shopping season in hopes of a solid end to a tough year.

The infographic then goes into detail about online sales revenues in Canada, which saw a 90% increase from 2005 to 2009, but are still very small when compared to the U.S.

All told, the infographic is pretty good, but I do wish there were more data points. I’m an ecommerce nut, so I love any information I can get about online shopping, spending habits, etc. It would have been nice to add some more imagery as well.
