This is a nice example of how something that sounds like a singular topic can be expanded into a greater story. Rather than simply listing 6 reasons to cover your boat, throwing in some illustrations, and leaving it at that, this infographic also details where boaters store their boats, what types of boat covers are available and their ratings, and how to ensure you shop for the right size. It’s a guide rather than an introduction, allowing viewers to get more than 1 type of information from the graphic.

The colors make sense for the topic, of course, and the iconography and data viz are effective. I do wish there was a bit more color contrast, especially in the case of the circle chart. You need the lines going from each section to interpret what they mean, because the color variation (especially in the first few) isn’t significant enough to do it all that easily on your own. This also makes the few instances of red on the infographic stand out and attract my eye, even if they aren’t the most important things for the viewer to focus on.

I’d also like to see a little more creativity with the data viz — maybe the circle chart could look like a life ring or fuel gauge.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s doing a great job of conveying information and includes some data viz, but a little more creativity and color contract could kick it up a bit.

There’s a lot of great data here that snorklers, divers, swimmers, surfers, sailors, parasailors etc. could find quite useful. It’s definitely good to know that it’s quite unlikely you’ll be killed by a shark attack–but unsettling that the rate of fatality is on the rise! The shark illustration is also pretty darn cute.

I’d like to see a little more visual organization, though. In some spots (Scientists Have Defined Two Types of Shark Attacks; We Cannot Eliminate the Possibility…), the subtitles/transitional text aren’t emphasized, making the text look even, shall I say, “textier”? Text can effectively kill an infographic when it just looks chunky/long, and it really doesn’t take much at all to look text-heavy. For instance, Sneak Attack: only two short sentences, but four and a half lines of text!

Also, there are so many opportunities for data viz, but only one of them (Global Shark Attack Activity) is used! The map is sort of an attempt at data viz, but there’s nothing to visually show the proportion between confirmed and fatal attacks–the division of blue and red is equal for each continent.

If there were more data viz and a bit more attention paid to organization, this infographic would be significantly approved. As is, I’d give it a C.

There’s a lot of great information about the declining state of the world’s oceans here. It provides great insight from a list of threats to in-depth examinations of the biggest offenders. The colors are great and the design is clean, so it’s easy to follow. I feel like I have a really good sense of the topic after looking this over.

What’s bogging this IG down is lots of text! It’s doing a lot of explaining and not enough showing. Some opportunities for data viz are missed–right at the beginning, there are 2 great stats that don’t get a chance to shine with visualization. (The Global Decline of Tuna Populations graph, however, is outstanding!) Any amount of text on a graphic is going to look pretty heavy in comparison to the white space around it, especially because of the justification of most of it–for example, the factoid about ghost nets is smooshed into 2/3 of the width of the graphic, so visually it ends up looking daunting. It looks like a whole paragraph, though it’s only 2 sentences, so my eye just wants to glaze over it. Infographics are about seeing the information, not reading it.

But again, I love the design and the way the data viz that is on the graphic is represented. If we could cut down on the text and bump up the data viz quotient, this would be fantastic. (And if we could protect our oceans from all the damage we do to them, with overfishing, littering and polluting, the world would be a better place! We could start by reducing our littering in general–do you know how much plastic is in the ocean? Reusable bags alone just might save the world…)

With all that in mind, I give it a B for now!
