This infographic was submitted to us by Rosetta.

This infographic shows off some great design skills and a whole lot of insight into what goes on in a presidential campaign. The red and blue color coding works perfectly for keeping the candidates’ relative statistics distinct, and the wide variety of points of comparison works through a complete set of data. I wish there was a conclusion or summary statement of some sort, though, instead of just ending on the piece of info that happened to be the last.

I really enjoy the illustration throughout, and it helps break up the text. I do feel that each component of the IG could be explained in fewer words, though. It’s also inconsistent whether the data viz is explained before or after the data is displayed, so I get a little lost trying to connect the explanations to the graphics sometimes. The best example is for Organic Search Results: the explanation is below the search results, but above the key for color coding, and is in its own bar across the IG with its own shade of grey. To me that read as a section separation rather than a unifying element, so it took a second to line everything up.

As endearing as all the illustrations are (I really love to see infographics that take big risks with lots of visual interest), I read through the IG a few times and don’t really think the “spooky” theme fits. There’s nothing that ominous about the data itself; it isn’t revealing dark secrets about the candidates or making scary predictions. It feels a bit like the theme was chosen just for the IG to be released around Halloween, rather than it being related to the information. I wish it had been tied in a bit more closely, which would have driven up the humor factor for the IG too.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. A little bit of work on organization and a clearer sense of theme would help this out a lot!

This infographic comes to us from eCampus. Recently they submitted an infographic that questioned whether the cost of college is really worth it. This infographic showcases 10 things that have impacted the world over the last 10 years. When they submitted this infographic, they actually wrote quite a lot of good information, so rather than showing what they wrote first, I’m going to dive into the critique as that sometimes gets lost when we post the submission content first.

There are a few things I like about this infographic: The typography and the background. This is the same way I felt about the last infographic they submitted. Here’s what I don’t like: it relies TOO much on text to drive the story. As Matt mentioned in yesterday’s post, an “infographic is a graphical representation of information.” If you can take the pictures out of the infographic and it still shows the exact same information, then it’s not relying on images to display the data. This is more akin to a nicely designed article. This is the problem that keeps coming up with infographics these days.

The other big issue I have is that the ecampus logo is too big and doesn’t even fit into the design. This is too blatant and will deter bloggers from sharing the infographic, which is unfortunate because infogrpahics do not return a good ROI unless they have a viral appeal.

Here’s what the folks at eCampus had to say about the infogrpahic when submitting it:

As 2011 nears, eCampus.com took a look back at some of the most important things that have occurred in the past decade.

Some events that have shaped the last decade were great milestones in American history such as the election of America’s first African American President, Barack Obama. However, the past ten years have also seen great devastation such as Hurricane Katrina, and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Also included are the BP Oil Spill and the Global Recession. These events have changed our country in many ways that will never be forgotten.

Things such as eCommerce and Social Networking have changed the way that people shop and interact with each other. The Harry Potter series debuted in 1996, but took the world by storm in the last 10 years, quickly becoming one of the fastest selling books of the past decade as well as the highest grossing movie series of all time. The Apple iPod changed the music industry just as the Apple iPhone changed the way we communicate with each other.

This infographic comes from Yahoo News and their Ask America project. It covers the responses of 1,671,276 people who were asked what their most pressing issues of today are. The questions asked covered culture, the economy, energy, immigration, national security, the state of the union, and the courts. Here’s what respondents had to say about these issues:

Is Obama out of touch or is he just busy working hard on big problems? – the majority said he’s out of touch

Should tax cuts be extended only for the middle class or should Bush tax cuts for wealthier Americans also remain in place? – respondents were split down the middle for this

Should the wealthy oil companies be taxed more to subsidize alternative energy sources? – respondents were again split down the middle

Would you like your state to adopt an immigration law similar to Arizona’s? – the majority of respondents said yes

With China’s speedy economic rise, can America still maintain its superpower status? – While most respondents said yes, this was almost split down the middle

Is the tea party powered in part by negative appeals based on race? – the majority of people said no

Should the courts invalidate the health care law because of the requirement to buy insurance? – the majority of people said yes

These are clearly interesting responses for sure. Marketers may want to use this information as well to determine the typical political demographic of Yahoo users.
