This infographic was submitted to us by Alfred Dunhill.

I love the silhouettes throughout this IG, evoking the imagery of the typical Bond intro credits. I also appreciate that text is kept to a minimum throughout and that although there are several different colors used, they are sectioned off so they don’t look overwhelming all together.

I’m confused about the data viz in the lead section. What are the percentages? Did Bond wear midnight blue fabric 47% of the time? Or did 47% of fans vote for midnight blue as their favorite? What’s the context? I do love the style of the pie charts, though — another classic Bond element.

Although the silhouettes are styled nicely, it’s a little odd that such detail is given about each and every thing Bond is wearing, yet we can’t actually see that detail. Omega ‘Seamaster’ Watch — not pictured. Converse Jack Purcell OTR? Just some olive-green shoe silhouettes. Ralph Lauren brown belt — not only not pictures, but probably wouldn’t be brown if it were. Just seems that silhouettes were used as an aesthetic without considering the value of detail to the piece. Since the concept of the infographic is all about the little details of Bond’s outfits, I think we need to see that.

I DO love the inclusion of the fashion faux-pas though!

In all I’d give this infographic a C. While a lot of effort was made to sneaky in Bond-esque elements, I think in some cases it overshadows the best interest of the infographic. I also need more explanation regarding what the data viz means. But conceptually, I love that there’s an infographic about this topic.

This is an example of something that by definition really is not an infographic. There are graphics, yes, and there is also info, but because the info isn’t visualized, this is what we call a viral visualization. It’s an interesting topic, so there’s potential for the IG to go viral, but the numbers are simply written out. Without data viz, it’s not an infographic.

If this was turned into one creative, color-coded bar chart (say, the skin print of the Na’vi for Avatar downloads/grosses, the bat symbol for The Dark Knight, etc.) it would qualify as an infographic–well, a very short one, anyway. Right now there isn’t even a difference in text size–The Incredible Hulk and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End both got 14 million downloads, but the number for Hulk looks much more significant because of the font size.

Again, though, this is definitely a topic that people are interested in, so it contains valuable information and may still be passed around as a viral visualization. As an infographic, I’d have to give it a failing grade.

Since infographics are typically designed for web use–though there are exceptions where they might be made for print–it only makes sense that there should be plenty of them about technology. This week we decided to dig up some that have been submitted to us in the past and compile them into one handy post. We look at some bygone eras in technology history, from the first mobile OS to the technological threats that endanger our use of the web. We also examine digital learning, how social technologies can be used within a business, B2B and B2C, and how the movie and tech industries function together. Take some time to learn a little more about tech today. Click any image to view the entire infographic.

Technology Enhances Learning

For those wondering whether the internet and computers are corrupting our youth, we direct you to this infographic showing that teachers (those people with experience in teaching our children) find great value in using the tools of technology in the classroom. If ever you find yourself asking “is our children learning?” you can derive great comfort from the fact that yes, they is indeed learning, and they is doing it on computers now. (Cheers to those who picked up the Dubya reference.) It seems that 57% of teachers feel digital learning is assisting student learning, while only 6% feel that textbooks are engaging. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the back problems kids get from carrying 40-pound backpacks to class.

Social Technologies

Social technologies can be used in several aspects of business–it isn’t limited to marketing. This infographic details how departments like HR and IT use social tech for time tracking and recruitment, while on the customer side you’d find more familiar approaches like surveys, sentiment analysis, competitor insight tools and more. Smartly divided between inside and outside business, this graphic, while lacking data viz, does provide insight into the various uses for the myriad social tech tools at our disposal.

The Evolution of Mobile Operating Systems

Can you remember back, all the way back to 1996? A time before tablets, iPhones, Facebook and even Y2K? Well, mobile operating systems were in development even way back then. That was the year the Palm OS launched, followed annually by Palm OS 2.0 and Palm OS 3.0. In the beginning, it was just Palm and Microsoft’s Pocket PC. Blackberry didn’t even enter the scene until 2005, swiftly followed by Android, iPhone, Symbian, Samsung, and a wave of evolutions following the establishment of these. This infographic takes you down techie memory lane and back into the dark ages, so to speak.

American Movie vs. Tech Industry (or, Love Bytes)

While this seems to begin as a rivalry, it really ends up as an analysis of two independent industries who have begun to grow together. Sure, the tech industry makes nearly 23 times more than the movie industry, but a lot of technology is focused around visual media–portable DVD players, tablets and iPhones that play video, TV screens in seat backs on airplanes and in cars… they’re quite intertwined. Besides, tech also provides solutions to the otherwise potentially unsolvable problems posed by imaginative screenwriters. This infographic shows the rise of the geek (as portrayed in cinema) from super lame to superhero and back down a little closer to earth.

Threat Morphosis: The Shifting Motivations Behind Digital Threats

Similar to the mobile operating systems infographic, this IG takes us back into the birth of tech threats. Who doesn’t have fond memories of the Love Letter worm of 2000? Back then, who wouldn’t want to open an e-mail proclaiming love, right? My, how times have changed. Four years later, 37,000,000 files were infected in one year, and from 2005 to 2008, Trend Micro saw a 2,135% jump in threats on the internet. Now we are cautious surfers of the world wide web, constantly on alert for new horrors and updating our anti-virus, anti-malware anti-anti software. Where might online threats be heading next?

Thanks for checking out these techie IGs. Keep up with us as we review new infographics, report on IG news and more!

>

The people at Ultimate Coupons submitted this “infographic.”

The vibe of this graphic is pretty funny. I really enjoyed going through the “how do you prefer to watch movies” quiz, and it’s cute that it seems to be on the back of the pictured couple’s couch. (Oops, “the alter of Apple” should be “the altar of Apple.” “The alter of Apple” would probably be Microsoft.)

Unfortunately, this isn’t really an infographic. The quiz is fun, and it does provide some information about different services in a sort of roundabout way, but the bottom half of this graphic is all text. There’s no visualization at all. It would’ve been very effective to make pie charts, bar graphs, line graphs, etc. of each of the variables they looked at here. “Number of DVD Titles Compared,” “Number of Streaming Titles Compared,” “Stream Speed Compared,” etc. would have made the presentation of this data much more accessible. The descriptions of each service need to be pared down, too. IGs aren’t about reading.

Another pretty big problem with this graphic (pun fully intended) is its width. An infographic that is wider than about 1,000 pixels makes the viewer have to scroll horizontally, and this is more than twice that width. That’s an inconvenience–it’s impossible to see all the info in even one category at once that way. (It’s especially detrimental to the quiz.)

This is a great concept for an infographic, but it needs a good amount of tweaking to bump it from graphic to infographic. I’ll have to give it a D-.

This infographic comes to us from TheBlackAndBlue.com, which is a blog for camera assistants. The infographic (colored black and blue… good branding play guys), explains the in’s and out’s of the IMAX movie theater. Upon submission of this infographic, TheBlackAndBlue.com said:

Nowadays it’s almost guaranteed that large tentpole releases from the studios get either the IMAX treatment, 3D releases or both. For awhile, IMAX was primarily used to showcase documentary fare at museums, but its adoption by Hollywood – thanks to its increased ticket price – has led the company to become bigger than ever. With Wally Pfister talking about shooting a mix of IMAX and 70mm film for The Dark Knight Rises, it’s important to discuss the differences between the formats and to truly dive into what IMAX really is.

The infographic provides the background and technical aspects of IMAX. Next, it shows just how different IMAX film is from traditional 35mm film stock. It’s definitely interesting to see how long and how heavy the actual film is when a movie is shot on IMAX film compared to traditional film, which is a nice addition to this infographic.

The pie charts at the bottom of the infographic are OK, but my eyes get lost. It would have been nice to incorporate some numbers in them. Pie charts without numbers can work on infographics, but only when there are a few pie charts. With 9, it just seemed too overwhelming to not have numbers. Also, I think it would have been interesting to include where the world’s largest IMAX screen is located.

Finally, there is too much space between the conclusion of the infographic and the source data. This allows anyone to cut off the bottom of the infographic and claim it as their own. It’s best to place a brand name near the top of any infographic to stop this from happening.

This fun infographic by LocateTV examines the relationship between the American film industry and the Silicon Valley tech industry, which have gone hand in hand for many years as both industries continue to aid in the others success. The infographic begins by showing how improvements in technology have aided in blockbuster hits like Avatar being developed. It also shows how creative ideas for futuristic technology in movies like Back to the Future have sent the tech industry into development for things like Warp Drive and self-tying shoelaces.

The infographic continues by showing how rich the tech industry is when compared to major Hollywood directors and producers, with the founder of Dell having more money than the richest people in Hollywood put together. The infographic continues by showing a variety of technological developments that have helped push movies forward and then shows the love of geeks in movies. All in all, though the makers of this infographic probably didn’t intend this, the infographic mainly shows a one-sided relationship. It seems that the technology industry has done amazing things to help push movies forward, but this can be said about almost any industry being helped by technology. There is little, on the other hand, to show how the film industry has helped tecnhology, so this strong relationship that the infographic suggests, is kind of a stretch at best.

As video games became more popular across the world in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s, more movie studios looked to the niche as an easy way to put out new movies that catered toward this audience. This fun infographic from CinemaBlend takes a deeper look at movies that are based after video games, plus some data on video games that were created because of a movie, like Tron. This infographic starts out by providing insight into the top grossing movies of all time that were adapted from a video game. Despite coming out in 2001, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie, is the number one movie on this list, grossing just over $131 million. It is interesting that a movie like Resident Evil didn’t make this list, considering it is about to release its 4th film, which will be in 3D. To release 4 films and one with the technology of 3D, one would assume that this video game movie has grossed a lot of money to pad its budget.

The infographic continues by pointing out other interesting facts including how many video game movies go straight to video. It also appears that video game adaptations to movies are most popular in Japan, which has produced 25, 12 of which revolve around Pokemon.

Overall the movies based on video games infographic from CinemaBlend is an easy to understand and informative way to learn about this niche in the movie industry.

This infographic gives an overview of Netflix and Redbox, who are battling to win over consumers who want to rent movies. Renting movies is the cheapest way to view them, as it costs much more to go to a movie theater or buy the DVD or Blu-ray disc. It notes that 90% of homes in the U.S. have a DVD or Blu-ray player, so it makes sense why so many people are choosing to use rental services like Netflix and Redbox. Most people who use Netflix get their discs via the mail, and can have one or more discs at a time, depending on their membership. Netflix members also stream some of the movies and T.V. shows that are available online. Redbox is a bit different in that people use their kiosks to get discs, and the infographic reports them having over 24,000 in the U.S.
