According to the new Infographic from Baines & Ernst – The Cost Of Celebrations – us Brits spend a whopping 2.4 billion on Valentine’s day! But that’s not the only celebration where we splash the cash…

This graphic is packed with stats and features some nice illustration. It’s an interesting choice of holidays to include (no winter holidays or graduations?) but it is good to have a specified focus!

It seems a little random to me whether some facts were included in the main body of the infographic or in the “Did You Know?” section at the botom. I think better differentiation would make this a bit more intuitive for the reader.

I also want to see data visualization here. The stats are listed and sometimes accompanied by iconography, but they are never visualized with charts, graphs, pictograms, etc. Data visualization is key to a great infographic — so much so, in fact, that without data viz, it isn’t really considered an infographic at all.

I’d make the design a little more focused, too. It’s a bit “busy” with objects jutting in from all sides, overlapping each other – it’s tough to know where to look.

In all I’d give this graphic a C-. It’s got the data down, but it needs organization, visualization and some de-cluttering!

This infographic was submitted to us by FastLoanTree.com.

While there are a lot of numbers here, there are only 3 instances of visualized data, all grouped together at the end of the IG. For the rest of the statistics, the numbers are simply written out without any visual accompaniment. A bar graph could be utilized for many of the top stats, to show the average household income relative to average savings, credit card debt, home value etc. It’d be interesting to see how debt compares to savings, for example. Then as for the percentages, a simple pie chart or pictogram (both are utilized later in the infographic) would help illustrate the proportions.

Since the infographic leads off with a list of numbers that aren’t visualized, it isn’t particularly engaging from the start. Beginning with data viz would be a good way to draw the viewer in to hang on for the rest of the information, if you weren’t planning on visualizing the rest of it for some reason.

I’d also like to see an introduction and conclusion. This infographic launches into a list of numbers, and then ends promptly with a logo. There are no section headings, either, so we end up with a set of random facts that lack a storyline. Infographics should tell a story, rather than just collecting assorted facts.

In all I’d give this infographic a C-. It could use organization, a storyline, and increased visualization to create a great infographic.

This infographic was submitted to us by Mint.com. They provided the following description:

“When compared to the simple joys of childhood, growing up and handling your financial responsibilities can be quite the challenge. … You might say Mint makes managing your finances seem like mere child’s play.

We started thinking about Mint, finances, and childhood—and got a little nostalgic. The following infographic reflects that childhood nostalgia with our version of everyone’s favorite childhood board game—Candy Land.”

This is really cute. I kind of want to print it out and turn it into a game. It’s nice to see bright colors used effectively, without overkill. The design and illustrations are really well done, and it’s a good guide to navigating the website.

Ultimately, though, nothing about this is an infographic. There’s no info–no data that can be visualized. An infographic needs statistics. Numbers, percentages, proportions, ratios. There’s nothing of the sort here, so we can’t call it an infographic and I can’t grade it as one. This would be really cool to have on a landing page, making the destinations (like the Ways to Save Cave) links to the parts of the site they mention.

I’d imagine this company does have some statistical data to work with, so maybe a similar format could be used for a future project that would truly be an infographic.

Happy Halloween! Looking out for your safety is always a good idea on holidays like these, but there’s one thing that may never be safe–your wallet! Read on for some spooky infographics on finances.

So many old adages apply to money. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Money doesn’t grow on trees. Money makes the world go ‘round. Whether you love to hate it, hate to love it, or some other unique combination of love and hatred, it’s impossible to ignore. You’re staring at something that costs money right now–your computer, smartphone, tablet, or other internet-browsing device. We’ve gathered a set of infographics about different aspects of this integral tool of commerce for your consumption. Click any image to view the entire infographic.

Buying Stuff on Credit is Expensive

You know exactly what you’re getting into when you click on this infographic, and it continues to tell it like it is all the way down to the bottom. A $3,500 diamond ring paid with a $25 minimum monthly payment on a 14% interest credit card means, and we quote, “YOU WILL NEVER PAY THIS OFF.” The infographic has a great color palette and plays around with text size and alignment in a way that could be risky if not done right–so it’s a good thing they’re doing it right. A variety of bar and circle graphs keeps things fresh.

The Price of Money

While this graphic isn’t quite an infographic, it does provide some interesting information. For example, a good way to make a really small amount of money would be to melt down pennies from before 1982, when they were 95% copper! You can also make a trivial amount of profit from melting nickels. Well, it sounds like a lot more fun than those greedy change-counting machines in the grocery stores, right? These are the kind of facts you can whip out at cocktail parties to impress company. (Because who else there is going to know how much money you can make from melting a pile of pennies?)

15 Monster Money Wasters

Speaking of greedy change-counting machines, this infographic addresses some of the top money wasters around. Things like high-interest credit cards and bank loans are unsurprising, but near the bottom of the list is pets. Obviously it costs quite a bit of money to own a pet, but… money wasters? Cover your ears, Spot. Besides that, this infographic is a nice monstrous shade of green, and visually enticing. The data within is definitely worth noting, and some of it is expanded upon in our next infographic.

The High Cost of Counterfeiting

As a $600 billion a year industry, counterfeiting is great money for those doing it, and financially ruinous for those it exploits. This infographic boldly proclaims a variety of statistics on the incidences and impact of counterfeiting. Spoiler alert: it does not make China look very good. With a great deal of consistency in the type and design of data, The High Cost of Counterfeiting is a good example of how a bunch of research can be compiled into one cohesive infographic that takes just a minute or two to read, compared to the same amount of data in written form, which could be a few pages long. Watch out for those “Converse Ball Star Classics” on the shelves…

US Bank Crime Statistics

Commercial banks accounted for over 90% of financial institution robberies in 2010. The majority of people injured in the robberies were bank employees, who might now be thinking about transferring to a credit union or, better yet, a mutual savings bank. Still, as the money wasters IG will tell you, keeping your money at home means you lose out on the miracle of compound interest. Your $60 will still be $60 in 30 years if it sits under your mattress. It will just be a lot more wrinkly.

Summary

There you have it: the ups and downs of money, be it spending, investment, robbery, counterfeit products, or melting coins. A topic like money is something everyone is involved in, but not everyone wants to (or knows how to) wade through financial lingo to get the facts. Infographics like these are an accessible way for everyone to get the basic statistics they’re after without spending entire days sifting through glossaries and financial self-help books just for a definition. Not to mention they’re incredibly easy to share, and they really spruce up a blog or website.

This infographic was submitted to us by Mozo.com.au, who provided this description:

“The current share market turmoil and global financial uncertainty have turned the
spotlight back onto cash investments. So Mozo.com.au has put together a ‘Choose Your
Own Savings Adventure’ infographic to help people find the best home for their savings
based on their particular needs and circumstances.

Finding the best place to stash your cash is becoming more difficult than ever, so we
created this infographic as a fun way to help savers through the maze.

The data in this infographic was sourced from Mozo’s independent database of the high
interest savings accounts and term deposits on offer from over 100 banks, credit unions
and building societies in Australia.”

This is a smart concept for helping people make good financial decisions. The suggestions are very specific, and a “choose your own adventure” is always fun, regardless of the topic. I also love the piratey tag line. It’s also nice that the yeses and nos are color-coordinated, so it’s extremely easy to follow their paths.

Though this is a very nice and handy graphic, it isn’t an infographic. The info isn’t visualized, and there isn’t really much opportunity for it to be. The interest rates could be turned into pie charts, I suppose, but generally it won’t work. One option would be to make graphs comparing what would happen to $5,000 after 5 years, or something like that, to show what the best overall values are. But as it is laid out currently, it’s mostly just text and dotted lines.

Because of that, although it is informative, this graphic would get a C- on the scale of infographics. Without data viz, it’s difficult to get scores any higher.

This infographic comes from the folks over at Kelly Outsourcing and Consulting Group. It’s a very well done infographic, with some great design work. I really appreciate the central graphic, displaying the overwhelming more significant value of work experience when compared to education. It’s clean, easy to look at and relatively self-explanatory. The color palette chosen here is uniform and easy on the eyes, while also allowing the graphics to “pop”.

There’s also a lot of text on here. While I don’t feel that it’s an overwhelming amount of text or that it drowns out the graphics, there’s almost always a way to visually portray that data with less text. The graphic explaining the main reasons why people change career paths is a bit drowned in text. Visual portrayals of more money, better balance and new interests are easy to come by and make for a better infographic. Another example: the graphic on the bottom left side showing employee’s confidence in returning to work after leave. It takes too much reading to get that message across, and by the time you’ve read the explanation you’ve almost lost interest in what the graphic was displaying in the first place. Maybe using less text, and relying more on data visualization for those two graphics would be a good idea.

That being said, this infographic does a great job overall with showing the importance of work experience and career paths. The central graphic is awesome, and that’s where people’s eyes will most likely fall and draw interest. I’d give this infographic an B+.

This infographic, from Discountvouchers.org, is an interesting look at some random statistics about money in the food industry. It starts out with a focus on the cow, whose meat is a major part of the American diet. They illustrate that only 500 lbs of an 1,000 pound cow is edible. Out of that 500 lbs, they estimate about 112 lbs are used to make hamburgers, which they equate to roughly 450 Quarter Pounders that you would typically purchase at McDonalds. Looking more into McDonalds, they note that the company said in 2005 that they sold 75 burgers a second for the entire year. This equates to 14,400 cows that are required each day for McDonalds to meet their customers demands.

The infographic then goes into statistics on tipping, and give averages on how well we tip in America, as well as tips for waiters and waitresses to earn larger gratuity. It also shows that tipping is not cool in some countries, like Japan, China, and South Korea. What many people will find most interesting on this infographic is the celebrity insights provided at the end of the infographic. They call out some big celebrity tippers like Johnny Depp, Mary J Blige, Willie Nelson, and Bill Murray. They also call out some of the so called worst tippers who are reported to not tip at all. These celebrities include Madonna, Sean Penn, Lindsay Lohan, and Mariah Carey.

Overall this is a fun infographic, but I am a bit confused on the true purpose, as it seems like a bunch of random statistics thrown together that relate to the food industry. I would prefer that the infographic had a more logical flow, or more specific target.
