This infographic comes to us from the people at Manolution. Here is what they had to say about their infographic upon submitting it to us:

As Richard Nixon destroyed happiness with his war on drugs, the 1970’s saw the world’s first personal computers, inspiring five geeks to start a pair of companies which would go on to shape the future of computing as we know it. This infographic details every major event and product launch for these two companies, complete with the corresponding historical stock price for each point of interest.

There are several things about this infographic that just do not really work. Though it is pretty common for infographics to feature a time line as the primary data set, this time line is way too long. It takes too long to scroll down and read through the entire infographic. There are several pieces of information here that could probably be left out to make room for more data visualization. There are a couple of graphs for data visualization at the beginning and end of the piece, but they are very boring and could definitely be made more interesting. Right now, they look like something that was just put together in Excel.

Overall, the design of this infographic is very dated – the aesthetic is very 1990′s, though the information covered goes through the present time. An infographic covering modern products from both Microsoft and Apple should be just as current in its design – this design does not even include the current logos for either company.

Paring down the text, shortening the time line, adding more interesting graphs and overhauling the design in favor of a more modern one would be the best ways to improve this infographic.

Today’s infographic comes to us from Microsoft Tag, which is Microsoft’s answer to the QR code. Upon submitting the infographic to us, the folks at Microsoft Tag had the following to say:

Just how popular has mobile usage gotten, and how does that translate to online marketing? This infographic looks at the explosion of this new industry and gives marketing managers a good look at how mobile tagging can aide in the integration of mobile marketing into their current marketing plan. This market is not just about teenagers, but it is all about reaching users doing what they love the most, socializing. Marketing to users on the go means positioning your message to people visiting restaurants, going on trips, and looking up random facts. It’s a new world in which consumers want information at their fingertips. Using mobile marketing and tags can help get the information they want to them quickly and efficiently.

All in all, the infographic is very informative and has a lot of great stats. When it comes to execution, this is definitely an infographic in the sense that it includes a good amount of data visualization. For instance, if all the text were taken away, the images would still tell at least part of the story, which is a necessity for anything to truly be an infographic. The other thing I like about this infographic is that it advertises the Microsoft tag without being too in your face with the advertisement.

Some things I don’t like about this infographic include the proportions and the design. The 520px width was clearly a restriction put on the designer, likely by the folks at Microsoft requesting the design. This could have easily been 1000px wide and posted at 500px wide with a “click to enlarge” link. The extra click would help to reduce bounce rate, and a 1000px wide infographic would have provided the designer with far more space to design, and would also ensure a shorter infographic for easier viewing. The imagery and color scheme aren’t too catchy, but in a sense that screams Microsoft. I know Apple wouldn’t produce an infographic like this.

Today’s infographic comes to us from SingleGrain.com, which is a company that does SEO, PPC, and Social Media Optimization (SMO). Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at Single Grain had the following to say:

This infographic highlights the income and expense of some of the top tech giants in mobile space.

All in all, the infographic is OK. The design isn’t bad, the color scheme is nice, but man is this thing wordy. Wordy infographics are often a deterrent for many. Infographics are a very common method of online marketing these days. Because of that, the space is super cluttered. This means that, to stand out from the crowd, your infographic has to be amazing and definitely not intimidating. This infographic, though, is a bit intimidating with all the text and it is not the kind of eye candy people are getting used to. To improve this infographic, I suggest that they add more data visualization. For instance, a time line of each company with important stock figures would be a great addition. A chart that compares them side by side vertically would help too. Yes, they show this horizontally, but it’s hard to see because of all the scrolling, so a concise bar chart would be an additional perk. Some data about the company owners, with pics of each owner would also be a great addition, as this is something few know and would like to see. Finally, the SingleGrain.com logo should be on this infographic. Since it’s not, what’s to stop someone else from claiming credit for this infographic? Infographics are a tool for link building and brand building, both of those can’t be accomplished without a logo in the design.
