It features a very clean layout, clear section breaks, iconography, and a bit of data viz. There is a whole lot of information here, so it makes a very useful guide for anyone seeking to learn more about the subject.

For the most part, the infographic avoids going too heavy on the text. The explanatory text below “Careers Most Likely to Cause Sexual Health Problems” is the only somewhat problematic point — my eyes just sort of cruise over the text there. It goes to show that even 3-4 lines of text on an infographic can look like far too much.

In place of some of the icons, it would be great to see more data visualization: the 5 Facts on Erectile Dysfunction section contains 5 numbers, but none of them are quantified with graphs, charts, or other forms of data viz. The more that numbers can be expressed visually, the faster the reader will be able to comprehend the numbers. Since everything after the graph is only illustrated with icons and text, it’s a little bit dense to get through.

In all, I’d give this infographic a B. Lots of great information, but could cut down a bit on text in various places, and utilize more than just one graph to tell its story more quickly — attention span is an important thing to, well, pay attention to!

I love all the illustration and iconography on this infographic, and am glad to see some data viz scattered throughout. I especially like the final chart. The organization is clear and the layout is easy to follow. There isn’t too much text, but there is a fair amount of white space, so it does take awhile to scroll through the entire infographic.

The detailed illustrations of medical devices are really interesting to look through (though I’m dying to know what all the numbers on the Medical Analyzer are!), and they provide a nice visual break from the aesthetic of the rest of the infographic.

There are a few instances where I wish data visualization had been employed, such as the sleep apnea sufferer’s likelihood of car accidents, strokes, and heart disease (maybe 6 of the car icons, 4 of the brain icons and 3 of the hearts?) and “The risk of DVT is 8 times higher for patients who are hospitalized.” The more work the illustrations and icons can do to explain the information, the better!

In all I’d give this infographic a B+ — it’s clean and easy to understand, and iconography and data viz are used to the infographic’s benefit. All I would work on is condensing the space a bit (making the numbers of each medical advance smaller could save space) and utilizing data viz whereever it’s applicable.

Although this provides a “point/counterpoint” argument regarding the safety and legality of DMAA, it is all “info” and no “graphic.” In essence, it’s text pasted onto a background, with no visual context or reference. It’s also devoid of hard numbers to help back up either argument. So, although there are no especially heavy instances of text in the infographic, the text appears heavy-handed anyway — because it’s all there is to look at.

Additionally, some typographical errors detract from the messaging of the infographic. For example, the first argument uses inconsistent title casing on both the “No” and “Yes” arguments. In the “No” argument, “harmful” is for some reason uncapitalized, while “Safe” is capitalized in the “Yes” box. The first instance of the word “is,” however, is missing from the “Yes” argument. This type of error is repeated in the second “Yes” argument.

Proofreading your infographic is a critical step to upholding your image online. In ideal circumstances, the infographic will be shared and critiqued across the web — bearing your company name and/or logo. Having a less-than-polished product linked to your name just isn’t great for business, whether that product is your website, a flyer, an email, an infographic, or anything else.

In all I’d have to give this graphic a D-. It doesn’t really end the debate with a decision — “The Answer” is that the “Yes” side argues “Yes” and the “No” side argues “No” — and there is neither illustration nor data visualization. There also isn’t any data to be visualized, and the text throughout contains errors. One would need to restart this infographic from the beginning to get it into shape.

This infographic contains clearly-presented facts with minimal text, allowing the reader to visually absorb the information and get a better sense of scope and proportion. For example, it’s visually clear that the overwhelming type of prescription drug fraud is drug-seeking, and that most prescription abusers are between the ages of 35 and 50.

The horizontal layout is not often used in web-based infographics, but because it doesn’t sprawl or require horizontal scrolling, it works here. The division of background colors and textures helps visually separate the “problem” section from the “solution” section.

The only thing I think this infographic lacks is… “that something.” It seems to be the sort of design that someone would respond to by saying, “It needs some pizzazz. Can we make it pop?” There’s nothing particularly standout about the design to draw me in — although the headlines do an excellent job in terms of content/copy. Perhaps a more engaging headline design, rather than just a plain font? A few illustrations or an unexpected element somewhere?

(I also happened to notice a typo: “Evidenced-based” instead of “Evidence-based.”)

In all I’d give this infographic an A-. It’s a concise and effective picture of the impact of prescription drug abuse as far as content, but could use a bit more visual interest and a touch of proofreading.

There is some interesting information in this graphic, coupled with entertaining copy — although at times it doesn’t make much sense. I’m guessing mercury, antifreeze, and paint thinner aren’t in regular Tamiflu, so how could they be “the active ingredients” at all?

I’m also not sure how the aesthetic fits in. Bulletin boards, paper clips, sticky notes… seems to harken to school or an office rather than prescriptions. Maybe an Rx pad, pharmacy counter or doctor’s office would be more appropriate.

What would really spice this graphic up the most is to take the numbers listed throughout and turn them into visualizations. Counterfeit medicines kill over 700,000 people worldwide each year? Create an icon to represent 10,000 people and put 70 of them. (Putting just 7 icons each representing 100,000 people might not really drive home just how many that is. A larger number of icons will work better.) That’s the same as the population of El Paso? Maybe Put a map of Texas and a ring around El Paso to show where it is and what physical portion of Texas it is. Create a bar graph to show that while the $700,000 LAX bust was significant, the $11.5 million Viagra ring bust was over 16x greater!

Data visualization is a critical element to any infographic. Illustrations also usually look more fluid than do several unrelated stock photos, so we encourage their use where applicable.

As an infographic I have to give this a D since there is no data viz. However, the information is interesting, so it has potential! Maybe add more numbers to increase the amount of data viz. How many people worldwide take each of these drugs? Any estimate on what % of each drug is counterfeit? What about the % of all drugs? More related numbers!

I like the simplicity of the data viz and the high-contrast icons representing healthcare apps here. The concise summaries of each healthcare app make that whole section appealing. The extremely thorough timeline on the side is also pretty intriguing, and I like the color coding by century.

Ultimately, there is far too much text on this infographic. The way that the timeline is squeezed into a narrow space on the left makes it look more text-heavy than it is, because some years take up three or four lines. The Advances in Medical Technology section could also use some pruning. It’s difficult to get someone looking at infographics to sit and read it. One of the benefits of infographics is that they can be taken in quickly, because text is kept to a minimum. Perhaps the infographic could have been made wider to give the visual effect of less text.

There are only two points of data viz on the infographic, and I’d love to see more. I’m also a little confused by the pie chart blended with the bar graph–what’s the significance of their proximity? They seem to be categorically different, as though they need two different headings.

Lastly, the title isn’t actually a question, but it’s punctuated with a question mark. (“How Has Technology…” would be a question.) Proofreading is always an important step of putting anything “out there,” whether online or in print.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It’s got data viz, but the text needs trimming and the overall design needs ingenuity. When someone can take in all the information in closer to 1 minute, it’ll be ready. For now, the reading takes longer than that.
