This infographic was submitted to us by Gavin de Becker & Associates.

There are a lot of good claims established here for why private security firms are coming up in the world. The simple layout and clean text makes navigating the infographic pretty easy, as there’s no clutter, no large text chunks, and nothing else appearing out of place. It’s a little plain (nothing especially unique or risky was attempted) so it doesn’t really draw me in visually, but in the same respect, it’s also definitely not gaudy or overdone.

The majority of numbers are visualized, which is great to see. I love the little icons for law enforcement vs. private security, and the color choice there is effective: gray for law enforcement (meant to be de-emphasized) and blue for “the good guys” (meant to be emphasized/presented positively). Sometimes it’s the subtle details that win people over – if I were choosing between law enforcement and private security, I’d probably be looking into private security careers. I definitely need some of those sunglasses.

I was surprised to learn that personal protection accounts for about half of all private security services. Guess it’s a good time to be a bodyguard!

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It utilizes data viz and concise text, but could use something a little flashy to make it stand out. Maybe the header/title would be the opportunity to do this.

This is a really interesting compilation of the prohibited and restricted items for shipping in various countries. The iconography is great and the map background fits in really well. Although the map is quite busy, the simplicity of the overlaid “stamps” makes order out of chaos. There’s only one section of visualizable data but it works well — it’s interesting to see that pasta is the #5 most prohibited item!

This IG does a great job of keeping the design interesting, organized and aligned with the theme. I’d love to see a little more data incorporated, although the long list of countries (15 and mainland Europe, not the 10 listed at the top!) takes up a lot of space already.

The final section is a little odd with regards to the alignment of the Xs and check marks. On some, they overlap, but on others they don’t touch. A little consistency here would make it less visually jarring; standardizing the length of the text in this section would be an ideal way to help with this.

In all I’d give this a B as an infographic, because I’d like to see some more visualizable data thrown in and a bit of a cleaner execution on the final section. Definitely an interesting topic to tackle though — now I’ll know where not to ship spaghetti!

I love infographics that use a game board as their main focal point, and this one does a good job of simplifying that just slightly. The infographic covers the path it takes for a bill to become a law, starting with an introduction into the legislature and concluding with final approval and publication. There are quite a lot of points along the path where a bill can be killed and the infographic shows this well with red hands mirroring a don’t walk sign.

Bills begin at the House of Representatives and then move the the Senate, but can always be pushed back to one or another in a big juggling act while the two halves of our legislative system try to reach agreement and compromise. I could definitely see this infographic being printed out and used in an educational setting, as images provide a great and easy way to learn.

Ultimately, this infographic reminds me of that old School House Rock “I’m just a Bill” song, but nothing could ever be as fun as that song, so the infographic just doesn’t hit the very high bar that song set. All that said, it’s still a very well put together infographic with a lot of great detail.
