SpareFoot, the largest online marketplace for self-storage, presents some figures that shed some light on what the future holds for the Class of 2013. Taken from a number of different sources, this infographic should give recent graduates a good preview of what they can expect out there in the real world.

There’s a lot of great information here, and it’s conveyed without an excess of text. This makes it really fast and simple to move through the infographic. It’s essentially exactly what the title says: a snapshot of the current graduating class! It’s especially interesting to see what students prefer in a job initially and again once they’re seriously considering a job — and that “friendly co-workers” makes the list both times!

In addition to keeping the text trim, the design utilizes data visualization — perhaps not at every opportunity, but it is there to help convey some of the information. The organization is clean, with subheadings and color changes to cue when new sections begin.

I would like to see the text lists portrayed with a bit more interest in some cases. Under “Corporate Culture,” in the aforementioned section about job considerations when initially and seriously considering a job, I like the use of iconography to break up the text a bit. But once we get down to “Top 5 Workplace Benefits…” and especially “Top Personal Qualities…” the lists are just blocks of text. I call out the “Top Personal Qualities” list particularly since every line begins with “Ability to,” making it a bit monotonous even though it’s only 5 short lines of text. Same goes for the entire “Work It” section.

In all, though, this infographic does what it set out to do, so I’d give it a B for conveying the necessary information in a clear and concise manner.

This infographic was submitted to us by HighestPayingCareers.org

There are a lot of priceless tips here about how to make the most of a job interview. The design is simple and the colors bright, and it’s a great little overview of what to do and what to avoid. I especially like the inclusion of sample questions–you can’t help but think of what your answer would be for each question when you read them.

But this infographic is missing something critical–it lacks data viz. There is one pie chart here, but it’s a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially because it uses nearly the same colors as the background of the section it’s in. While this graphic is certainly a useful tool, it isn’t a true infographic because it lacks visualizable data.

Surveys could beef up the data quotient here–what percentage of interviewees find themselves sweating excessively? How many forget to bring a copy of their resume? What percentage of hiring managers would reject someone based on other factors besides appearance?

Numbers could be quite helpful for people seeking the best paying jobs–knowing that 2 out of 3 interviewees undervalue themselves when negotiating pay, for example, could make them pay extra attention to this themselves. (Let’s be clear: that stat was completely made up. It was just meant to illustrate the importance of data!)

In addition, the value of education in landing a job is evident in the employment/unemployment rates in the United States (which would be great to include here for more data viz!), so this will be an especially valuable resource for those who’ve earned or are pursuing the highest paying Masters Degrees.

As an infographic I’d give this a D–but as a tool for job hunters, a B+!

This infographic about five reasons why top talent leave their jobs comes to us from the people at CMOE.com.

I like the flow and simplicity of this infographic. It keeps the information short and to the point and is not cluttered with all kinds of text or unnecessary images.

Overall I give this a B. One suggestion that I have is to add something to the bars showing percentages that would create a little more data visualization. I do like the graphics that represent each of the top five reasons, it is easy to tell what the reason is without reading the text. The angry looking guy wearing a crown is clearly a bad boss and the sinking ship clearly represents a failing business. I can tell that the little award ribbon stands for recognition, and the briefcase climbing stairs is a clever way to represent internal politics or climbing the corporate ladder.

I said I like the shortness of the information in this, but I feel like there could be a little more of it, not a lot, just one or two more facts or statistics for each of the five reasons. This could add a lot and provide opportunities for more data visualization. I like the overall color scheme and design of this infographic, it is easy to understand and held my attention. In my opinion it is better to have an infographic that is a little short on information and graphics rather than one that is text-heavy or full of images that don’t make any sense.

This is a pretty good infographic with no major problems and I like the graphics that are there. With a little more data visualization and maybe some additional information and data I would give this a higher grade.

>

This infographic comes from the folks over at Kelly Outsourcing and Consulting Group. It’s a very well done infographic, with some great design work. I really appreciate the central graphic, displaying the overwhelming more significant value of work experience when compared to education. It’s clean, easy to look at and relatively self-explanatory. The color palette chosen here is uniform and easy on the eyes, while also allowing the graphics to “pop”.

There’s also a lot of text on here. While I don’t feel that it’s an overwhelming amount of text or that it drowns out the graphics, there’s almost always a way to visually portray that data with less text. The graphic explaining the main reasons why people change career paths is a bit drowned in text. Visual portrayals of more money, better balance and new interests are easy to come by and make for a better infographic. Another example: the graphic on the bottom left side showing employee’s confidence in returning to work after leave. It takes too much reading to get that message across, and by the time you’ve read the explanation you’ve almost lost interest in what the graphic was displaying in the first place. Maybe using less text, and relying more on data visualization for those two graphics would be a good idea.

That being said, this infographic does a great job overall with showing the importance of work experience and career paths. The central graphic is awesome, and that’s where people’s eyes will most likely fall and draw interest. I’d give this infographic an B+.

This infographic comes to us from TaxFix.co.uk and covers jobs in the UK that pay the most taxes. It’s definitely an interesting topic, so this infographic was fun to checkout. Upon submission, the people at TaxFix said:

Different industries pay different amounts of tax. This infographic looks at which jobs pay the most tax in the UK. The designer has taken the total tax paid in each sector and divided it by the number of workers within that industry. The infographic also shows the relative size of each industry compared to the entire workforce and how that compares to the tax revenue of the UK. One of the interesting aspects of the infographic is the disparity between the financial sector which only makes up 3.6% of the population but contributes 14.4% of all the countries income tax revenue due to their high incomes.

When it comes to the design of the infographic, it’s a pretty good first try from TaxFix.com. The biggest challenge with an infographic is actually shifting one’s design mentality to layout a large amount of information while using images to showcase the info rather than text. They have done a decent job of this in the two primary sections of their infographic. For instance, a bar graph is often a necessity for infographics, and this one comes out of the gate with one. While it’s a fairly typical bar graph, they do a good job of calling out the most taxing job by making that bar blue. The bottom section is also good, since they use different size coins to showcase different amounts of tax and workforce percentages. Often, those who do their first infographic tend to just use images as a background and hope people will see the difference in numbers through the text. With this infographic, though, they are using the images to show the difference as text should always be an after thought.

There are some areas for improvement that could be added to this infographic. To begin, the bar graph is a bit boring. I suggest first that they get rid of the 3D element, since there aren’t any other 3D elements on the infographic. Next, they should consider a different background for the bar graph (even just a darker color would help separate the section better. The other issue with the bar graph is that there is no icon for Financial intermediation and the number for that overlaps the blue bar slightly. The icons used are good, I just which they were next to the job titles instead of at the end of the bar graph. Also, I wish there was more spacing between the bullet points (or better yet, get rid of the bullets all-together and replace them with the job icons). For the bottom section, it would be nice to reuse those icons so that everything ties together. It would be also nice to have a few more stats, as this is kind of a short infographic.

Whenever we’re asked for “constructive criticism” by the person who submits the infographic, we like to go into depth about the pros and cons as I just did. If you ever want a lot of feedback with your infographics, don’t hesitate to ask and we’ll be sure to go in depth with our write up.

The infographic, by Term Life Insurance, shows the most hazardous jobs in America and what they pay. The infographic begins by stating that in 2009, 4,340 workers lost their lives due to fatal occupational injuries in the USA. The infographic is meant to examine the most dangerous jobs, the risks of each occupation, and what you can expect to get paid for potentially putting your life in harm’s way.

The bottom of the infographic includes a key that explains the different types of accidents, which include transportation incidents, contact with objects and equipment, assaults and violent acts, falls, exposure to harmful substances, fires and explosions. The other part of the key shows an expected wage using dollar signs. Finally, the key explains that the number next to each job type is the fatal work injury rate per 10,000 full-time equivalent workers.

The jobs are ranked by this final number, with fishers having the largest fatal work injury rate at 20 fatalities per 10,000 workers. Of these fishers, most get paid $20-$30K/year while the top tier can expect to earn $50-$60K/year. Out of all the workers, only pilots get paid a six figure salary, which seems pretty unfair considering all of these jobs do quote a lot for our country and risk quote a lot to do it.

In the end, the infographic is pretty clear and does a great job of making its point. If there was one thing I could change it would be to put the key at the top of the graphic instead of the bottom, because the infographic is confusion for anyone looking at it above the fold, which is when most people will decide whether or not to scroll and see the entire graphic.
