This infographic was submitted to us by DFANY and was created using Photo Stats, an iPhone app used to create infographics.

There’s a pretty good amount of data viz here, which shows the app understands that infographics require data visualization. There’s useful and pertinent information throughout. It also is very big, as the name implies, so everything is easy to see and pretty well organized.

Speaking of “big,” this infographic is 1,280 pixels wide. It seems to be such only because the ribbons for subsection titles extend beyond the actual IG, necessitating a sort of second background. One advantage of this is that the white background of the IG is rescued from blending in with white web pages, but it looks a little awkward.

Some opportunities for data viz were missed, so there are a lot more numbers than charts and graphs. The viz that is here is pretty run-of-the-mill–bar charts, line graphs, world maps. Since I don’t have the app, I can’t really speak to its capabilities, but perhaps it doesn’t “understand” the finer points of unique design.

Speaking of “unique”–apps are finite; creativity is limitless. Churning out the same old bar graphs and ribbon headings does nothing to drive infographics forward. I understand the appeal of individuals or small businesses “making” their first infographic for cheap, but attempting to use these cookie-cutter IGs for SEO is pointless. Even though the app seems like a great deal at $0.99, infographics are all about ROI, and a boring app-generated design won’t likely get picked up by users or businesses.

Any time or money you might’ve saved by creating your infographic on an app, without a human designer, is null when the infographic is predictable and uninteresting. Original illustration makes infographics–dare I say it–”pop.” Unique data viz is essential for engaging your audience, but this app is a one-trick pony. A designer tasked with the same data could create something far more interesting. I’d give this infographic a C-, because while this is okay, some things just should not be run by robots.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Sortable.com.

There’s a pleasing purple throughout this graphic, and the variations in size and typeface keep the information engaging throughout. There are lots of really interesting facts and stats here, and they’re pretty well organized. It’s fascinating to see the impact that this brand has overseas, in a country where the phones are produced but largely unaffordable. I like the relative ambiguity of the background image–it provides enough visual interest but isn’t distracting. In fact, sometimes very plain backgrounds on IGs are more distracting than patterned ones! That logo dispute at the bottom is pretty interesting too; does Apple really have a problem with all images that even sort of look like an apple?

While there is plenty of great information here, none of it is visualized. There’s lots of text and numbers but no charts or graphs. Viewers have to do more reading than looking, which isn’t ideal for an infographic. Since the size of text varies throughout, the designer could use that to his/her stylistic advantage while employing data viz at the same time. Right now, the size variation seems to be purely aesthetic. The largest statistic is the 27 suppliers who allegedly have serious pollution problems–but 27 is definitely not the highest number here. (This would be easier if there were more comparative data–maybe versus Microsoft or other tech giants?)

On a technical note: 70B$ should be $70B.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C+. It’s got really good data, but without visualization it’s just not truly an infographic. Some revision in this area would make this fantastic.

This infographic comes to us from Go-Globe.com and covers facts about what can happen in 60 seconds for several websites that we all use every day. Here is a sample of what goes on online each minute:

12,000+ ads are posted to Craigslist.org

98,000+ new Tweets are posted.

6,600+ pictures are uploaded to Flickr.

There are over 695,000 status updates on Facebook.

Over 70 new domain names are registered.

This infographic has a lot of data. It is fairly easy to read and go through quickly, but this data could be visualized in a much better way. Right now, each statistic is accompanied by the respective logo of the website. I really like the way that all of the logos are incorporated and all of the facts are very interesting.

This data could be presented well graphically — the LinkedIn section is a good example of how most of this data could be visualized. Each icon could represent a certain number of profiles (or tweets or status updates) and then the total number could be displayed that way. The sites whose statistics involve amounts of time (like Pandora or Skype) could be visualized in a similar way or with a bar graph. In addition improving the aesthetic of the infographic and making it easier to read, visualizing the data would be a great way to compare activity on each of these websites as well.

This infographic is designed nicely, but could seriously benefit from work on the data visualization aspect. It has the potential to be really great!

This “infographic” comes to us from the people over at Geekaphone and covers various aspects of hosting a dinner party using your smartphone. Though there is some cool information about different smartphone applications that can be used in planning the party, there is absolutely no data visualization, so we cannot call this an infographic. There are a couple of call-outs to some survey results on cell phone etiquette, but that is all.

There is information here that could be visualized – there could be information on how popular each of the apps are and how many people have downloaded them. The survey results on phone etiquette could definitely be expanded upon and visualized as well, as there is likely a ton of information out there on this. It could be easily be visualized with a simple pie graph. I think the etiquette “tips” themselves should be the least prominent section (possibly at the very end) since there isn’t much to visualize there and it’s more of a sidenote.

To be an infographic, the piece needs to rely heavily on data visualization and only use text for emphasis. This information could definitely be displayed in that way in order to make this into a real infographic.

This infographic comes to us from eCampus. Recently they submitted an infographic that questioned whether the cost of college is really worth it. This infographic showcases 10 things that have impacted the world over the last 10 years. When they submitted this infographic, they actually wrote quite a lot of good information, so rather than showing what they wrote first, I’m going to dive into the critique as that sometimes gets lost when we post the submission content first.

There are a few things I like about this infographic: The typography and the background. This is the same way I felt about the last infographic they submitted. Here’s what I don’t like: it relies TOO much on text to drive the story. As Matt mentioned in yesterday’s post, an “infographic is a graphical representation of information.” If you can take the pictures out of the infographic and it still shows the exact same information, then it’s not relying on images to display the data. This is more akin to a nicely designed article. This is the problem that keeps coming up with infographics these days.

The other big issue I have is that the ecampus logo is too big and doesn’t even fit into the design. This is too blatant and will deter bloggers from sharing the infographic, which is unfortunate because infogrpahics do not return a good ROI unless they have a viral appeal.

Here’s what the folks at eCampus had to say about the infogrpahic when submitting it:

As 2011 nears, eCampus.com took a look back at some of the most important things that have occurred in the past decade.

Some events that have shaped the last decade were great milestones in American history such as the election of America’s first African American President, Barack Obama. However, the past ten years have also seen great devastation such as Hurricane Katrina, and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Also included are the BP Oil Spill and the Global Recession. These events have changed our country in many ways that will never be forgotten.

Things such as eCommerce and Social Networking have changed the way that people shop and interact with each other. The Harry Potter series debuted in 1996, but took the world by storm in the last 10 years, quickly becoming one of the fastest selling books of the past decade as well as the highest grossing movie series of all time. The Apple iPod changed the music industry just as the Apple iPhone changed the way we communicate with each other.

This is a really fun infographic from AllAreaCodes.com, which covers the 7 types of iPhone users. It starts out with some great stats about AT&T versus Verizon and the coming war of the iPhones between these two carriers. Next, it goes into a list of the 7 types of iPhone users, which is not rooted in fact at all and is very text heavy, but still really fun. While I often talk about how infographics should not be text heavy, this infographic has a lot of great and original design behind it that makes up for it. It serves as a very funny way to pass the time and will likely have a lot of people laughing. Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at AllAreaCodes.com said the following:

With over 70 million Apple iPhones sold already and with Verizon announcing that they will begin selling the iPhone in February, which will lead to many more millions of users. People are passionate about their smartphones, especially the Apple iPhone. The 7 Types of iPhone Users takes a humorous look at the different stereotypes of iPhone users that have emerged. These are called The Fanboy, The Unappreciative, The Overuser, The Deskjob, The Hacker, The Senior Citizen and The Complainer. If you are an Apple fan and an iPhone user, you can tell us what type of user you are by voting, tweeting or commenting.

After going through this infographic, I’m definitely The Overuser and my boss is The Deskjob. While this isn’t rooted in fact, it sure pegged me right. So how bout it, what type of iPhone user are you?

Today’s infographic comes to us from AppOfTheDay.com, which is a website that posts daily reviews of apps available for the iPhone. The infographic details the performance of Apple’s app store since its launch, and focuses on numbers as of December 7th 2010.

There are some interesting stats in this infographic, including the fact that free apps make up for 33% of all apps in the store while 50% of the apps cost anywhere from $0.99 to $2.99. The infographic continues on to show the distribution of apps by platform, category, and price.

Overall, the infographic is OK. The design is nice, but the data is lacking. This isn’t unlike other infographics that have already been released, so this infographic is missing a hook that would make it worth sharing. All in all, there aren’t a lot of points of data in this IG, and some of the most interesting points live in very small (probably 10px) white font that is already hard to read. The infographic does do a good job of sticking to its roots though, by displaying colorful graphs in a layout that is easy to take in all at once. Another nice feature in this infographic, though subtle, is the choice to use rounded corners. As infographics become more and more the norm, the competition is heating up, and something as small as rounded corners will help an infographic stand out from the crowd.

This is one of the latest infographics created by Mobclix.com, which is an analytics company that lets iPhone app developers track the usage, traffic, purchases, and more related to their apps. The infographic, takes an aggregated number of shopping app impressions from November, which was an incredibly busy time for shopping both online and offline. While there are many great numbers out there related to just how well holiday sales were online during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there’s not a lot of data that points to the performance of mobile commerce. Luckly, Mobclix put out this infographic to help fill in the gaps and show just how important mobile commerce is becoming in our smart phone world.

The infographic shows that impressions on iPhone shopping apps grew by 249% in November 2010 when compared to November 2009. It would have been nice to see exactly what that number of impressions equaled, but maybe that will be on another infographic. The infographic then goes into details about what states had the most impressions, what days (like Black Friday), what types of apps were used, and more.

Ultimately, the infographic has some great numbers, but it lacks an introduction and conclusion. At minimum, the infographic needs a title, which could act as its introduction rather than writing one in. Right now, the infographic has a lot of great numbers, but without any conclusive statement about the numbers, it’s not as eye-opening as it could be.

Flowtown never seems to be at a loss for informative infographics, and their latest one about the importance of apps is no stranger to this rule. The infographic begins by showing how our culture has become so app dependent due to the increase in smart phones. It then dissects the app user, by showing that the majority of app users are younger, more educated, and more affluent than other cell phone users.

The second part of the infographic goes into detail about the most popular types of apps on the market today. This is a highly informative section that could come into use for anyone wanting to develop an app to supplement their income. In this chart, you can see that game apps are the most popular, which is to be expected, but some may be surprised that puzzle and strategy apps are the most popular of all game apps.

The final part of this infographic shows how often apps are downloaded and how much they are used. It’s interesting to see that some people have not downloaded apps for awhile, which could be for a number of reasons, one being that the market is becoming too saturated, so there are too many to choose from. It is also interesting to see that most app users actually take advantage of having the app on a daily basis, rather than buying and not touching anymore. This could suggest that app users are becoming more savvy and choosing to download a select set of apps based on what they know they will use.

The one thing that this infographic does not have, which would have been interesting to see, is the overall revenue of the apps industry. This is quickly becoming a highly profitable venue for developers, and I’ve always wondered just how much the average developer earns and how much the entire industry is worth.

This infographic, by CellPhones.org, gives a variety of facts about text messaging in a very fun design. Setup to look like an iPhone text conversation, the infographic lists 14 facts that show just how much money the texting industry is worth. Some interesting facts include the following:

Text message usage is up to 72% of cell phone users in 2010, from 65% in 2009

Of 18-29 year olds, 95% text message

The average U.S. cell phone user sends 17 text messages per day

If you text while you drive, you are 23 times more likely to get into an accident

10% of texters over 25 believe that texting is acceptable when having sex

3 in 5 teens say that sexting is not safe, but 1 in 5 do it anyways

The average teen sends 10 texts per hour during the day

Research done in 1985 determined the 160 character limit of text messaging

Text messaging earns $60-70 billion every year for phone companies

While there are a lot of fun facts in this infographic, the majority of it is text. It would be great if there was more imagery to make all of the information a little bit easier to digest.
