This infographic was submitted to us by Ecommerce Partners, who also provided this description:

Do you want to increase sales, visitor retention, and customer satisfaction? One way to accomplish these goals is through a re-platforming of your ecommerce website. Selecting a new platform for your business can be confusing with so many options available. It is important to define your ecommerce strategy and goals, and then try to find the platform that best serves those needs. Take a look at this infographic for more tips on what to look for in an ecommerce platform, and whether re-platforming is right for you!

This graphic makes a lot of good points about its topic and features some cute illustrations. However, the illustrations aren’t driving the graphic: the text is. Since the viewer has to read their way through, it doesn’t really do the job that an infographic is meant to do. An infographic should tell a story with imagery wherever possible, keeping text to a minimum. This maximizes engagement in our visual world.

Unfortunately, this feels a bit like an article that was overlaid onto some background imagery, rather than an infographic. As mentioned, it needs to rely more heavily on illustration, data visualization, iconography — anything other than text blocks to tell its story. The text should play a more supplemental role.

There are also inconsistencies and typos. The word “e-commerce” is spelled several different ways throughout the IG, alternating capitalizations and occasionally featuring a hyphen. That’s a unique situation since everyone seems to have their own way to spell it, but it should be consistent within the image. Proofreading is a pretty important step to any final product, so be sure to triple-check your work.

Given this, it’s tough to grade this as an infographic. I’d have to give it a D for being almost exclusively text, unfortunately.

This infographic was submitted to us by PokerStars.com, who also submitted this description:

March 8 was International Women’s Day, a time we recognize the contribution women make to the world in every field and the historical inequalities women have had to face. This day of recognition dates back to 1911, a time long before we thought about women’s contribution to the game we all love.

So now in 2013, we thought it might be interesting to look at the female make-up of PokerStars and recognize some of the big contributions some of our top female players have made to the poker realm.

There are a few examples of data visualization on this infographic, from the first stat about the percent of the site’s players that are female to the fastest growing countries and the money list. There are more places where it could have been integrated, but it’s nice to see it put to use in a few different spots, and I like the bar charts created by chips/coins instead of just opting for plain graphs. The Top Countries for Female Players section could have also used data viz, but it’s not seen there.

A little more could have been done throughout for visual interest — maybe a textured background or a little more typographical variation. Yet, overall, the text is kept short, there isn’t too much information, and the organization is easy to follow.

In all I’d give this infographic a B: it accomplishes its goals, but is a little bland and could stand to maximize its data visualization opportunities.

This infographic was submitted to us by SinglePoint, who also provided this brief description:

Internet WiFi for traveling is a must, say most U.S. mass transit riders. This infographic outlines WiFi use on buses and how it impacts ridership.

This infographic makes good use of data visualization and clean, spacious design to offer a clear understanding of the topic without clutter or verbosity. By showing how use of public transportation has increased along with demand for WiFi, they draw a reasonable conclusion.

Another nice touch is that the infographic doesn’t go overboard on typography. It can be tempting to use different fonts for headlines, important points, or any other number of uses, but this IG’s restraint in that arena contributes to its easy-to-digest design.

The first data set, representing the survey of 1,000+ bus riders, is a little strange in the way the categories are separated. Someone who wished to email or surf the web would likely want WiFi as well, yet WiFi is shown as a distinct category. Still, it’s evident that device use on public transit is prominent.

I like the color distinction between the two main sections. However, I feel that for the topic of the IG, the even distribution between them is a little odd; it seems the first section is the main topic of the infographic, and the second is just more general info about public transit. Judging by the title and intro, the infographic doesn’t seem to be so much concerned with how many people ride the bus and where than what they’re doing on the buses, why they need the WiFi, etc. Maybe a few callouts of systems using WiFi successfully, or surveys of how many people have used WiFi in public places recently, etc. would be more helpful than a deep dive into transit itself.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s heavy on data viz, light on text, but could maybe use a second look at which is the emphasis: public transit itself, or device/mobile use on public transit.

This infographic was submitted to us by Satellite Broadband ISP, who also provided this description:

Facebook has been around since many of the people who use it can remember. For me, it was right around the time I was beginning college and I couldn’t wait to get a college email so that I could use it.

…

Now how does Facebook compare to Myspace and some of the other internet giants that have come before it? Could they end up like Myspace? If so, who’s next to take over?

This infographic takes a look at some of the internet giants that have come before Facebook, how they got started, where they are now and how they ended.

I like the concept of the topic — it does seem like Facebook has had some “staying power” in the Internet world, but at some point it’s got to go.

I don’t think the title accurately represents what’s shown here, though, because the bulk of the information is about other sites/services that have already tanked. So it’s not really about “who’s next” but what might happen to Facebook and what has already happened to others.

There’s not much to be said about the design here. The star-like background behind the title doesn’t seem to tie into anything, the bar graph is very basic (and uses three disparate fonts), and the companies described (Facebook, AOL, Yahoo!, MySpace, Friendster) are just haphazardly thrown in. Although it seems that “Challengers to the Facebook Throne” is meant to be the conclusion, my eye didn’t find it that readily — I was trying to figure out which bulleted list to read first, instead.

This infographic would really benefit from a more descriptive title, better organization, more unique design elements, and proofreading. There are lots of inconsistencies in capitalization and punctuation as well as spelling errors. In an ideal scenario, an infographic will be shared across blogs, publications, and social media outlets all over the web — with the company’s name right on there at the bottom. If it’s unattractive and unpolished, it doesn’t present a good image for the company. That’s why attention to design and detail are so critical.

I’d have to give this infographic a D. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t drawn in by the design, I wasn’t clear on what the information would be about, and I couldn’t get past all the typos.

This data was collated by Misco, a trading name of Misco UK Ltd. Misco/Epiphany Solutions accept no liability for any inaccuracies or incompleteness of any information contained on this page.

This infographic was submitted to us by Misco.

The design here is extraordinarily simple, and the subheadings are clear, which makes it easy for the eye to drift to whatever category it’s most interested in. Since the colors and typography remain consistent, there is nothing particularly distracting here–although a black background can be considered a little extreme in the infographics world.

In the version on Misco’s website, you can click on each visualization to see a thumbnail of the graph/chart individually along with more detail, which is helpful since some of the numbers aren’t legible in the full format. I appreciate the amount of data viz here: the design is quite minimal on text, which we encourage in effective IGs. The charts are quick and concise, taking what could be just a bland report or whitepaper and turning it into something that makes its conclusions abundantly clear. The “Average Download Speeds” section, however, looks pretty overwhelming–I think it would have been better to convert this section into a few charts as well, so it isn’t just a big list of numbers.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. The black background/white text plus bright colors is a little rough for me, but I like the innovation in fitting in a lot of information by providing individualized zooms.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Intel.com.

This colorful timeline provides a pretty interesting history of the internet and all the related technology. It’s amazing to see the rapid growth from 0 connected devices all the way up to a projected 31 billion in just 60 years. The color palette here is really nice–dark backgrounds can be hard to pull off, but the easily interpretable key at the top of the IG coupled with the bright colors of all the lines makes it work. The growth of daily PC sales is also impressive, and the way it’s displayed is a great example of data viz.

I do wish there was more data viz than just the PC sales and the number of PCs with Intel processors. The rest of this IG is just a timeline. It’s a nice, informative timeline, but there isn’t much more to it than that. (On that note, I don’t see gray on the color key for the timeline. What do the gray boxes stand for?)

With so many product mentions, innovations, and the tracking of the worldwide number of connected devices (another note–2 billion and 15 billion connected devices don’t have corresponding large years on the right side of the IG), there are so many unused opportunities for data visualization in this infographic. Since this is a relatively short infographic as it is, it certainly wouldn’t compromise the concise nature of the IG to add in some more easily visualized data. This would help boost it from the B- I’m giving it as-is.

Lebseo Design submitted this infographic to us.

The data here does a great job of conveying exactly what it’s supposed to. The information is extremely focused, which keeps the viewer on track and lets them get through the IG quickly–and that’s the point. (Of course, I spent a long time staring at the age distribution charts, but not because I didn’t understand them. I just thought they were really innovative and useful.) The cubic flags are also pretty visually interesting. It was really interesting to be able to follow the trends by country, and to see that 18-25 is the most Facebook-entrenched age range in both men and women in all countries.

If anything, the design is a touch drab. I think I was so fascinated by the age distribution charts because they were among the most unique data viz here, and because the font choice and extremely plain background weren’t particularly enticing. It gets a little overly blue from the age charts downward, too, which instills sort of a visual monotony. The data viz really is great, and there is absolutely no purposeless text on this infographic, but a little something to break it up might be nice. All the data viz stretches to the borders, so there’s no room to mix it up. A couple of text facts or smaller charts and graphs thrown in might actually provide the spice this infographic needs.

In summary, what’s here is great, if a little visually repetitive, but a little size and info variation could benefit the infographic overall. I’d give this infographic a B: it’s doing its job, so now it just needs a makeover.

Remember upgrading your 14.4 modem to a 56k one? Or when you first surfed the web on broadband? This infographic, brought to you by OnlineBackupsReview, provides a comparison of popular Internet connection speeds, and more traditional means you could use to move the data. All in all, it provides some fun facts and simple comparisons to make it very easy to understand the difference between connection speeds. For instance, with today’s connection speeds, you could easily transfer 2GB of data, which equals approximately 650 photos, in about 14 minutes. In the past, this kind of transfer could have taken days. They show the different times it would have taken in the following ways:

Using a Modem: it would take 4 days, or the amount of time it takes to bike from Chicago to New York

Using a DSL: it would take around 6 hours, or the time it takes to fly from New York to London

Using a Cable Modem: it would take about 2.5 hours, or the amount of time it takes to drive from New York to Philadelphia

Using Fiber: it would take about 14 minutes, or the time it takes to walk 14 blocks in Manhattan

After rolling through some real life examples to show just how far we’ve come, the infographic goes on to show how much space certain documents take up, so that you can understand just how long it would take to transfer a simple word document via dial up modem. It then shows a few more world examples about how long it would take to transfer anywhere from 1KB to 100GB.

This is a fun infographic that shows just how amazing Fiber Optics can be when it comes to speed online. It also makes one who can’t get Fiber Optics want to opt for Cable over DSL any day. The overall design of the infographic could use some work, as there is a lot of information in a small amount of space, but it gets the point across and is a good topic for a company like OnlineBackupsReview.com
