Pet365.co.uk submitted this infographic to us, along with this description:

“As a rose-tinted dog owner with three very well behaved pooches (I’d give them at least an 8 out of 10) I decided to set up a dog training survey to find out what everyone else thought. With just over 1000 respondents from all over the world (mainly the UK and US) we found some fascinating trends which indicate the the actions we take when man’s best friend is a puppy have a huge impact on their training and personalities as they get older.”

There are adorable illustrations throughout this infographic, and it definitely contains some useful and interesting information. It was surprising to see how many dog owners had never been to a training class! There is lots of great statistical information here, and so there’s plenty of data viz too.

It’d be nice to see the data viz played with a bit, though. The colors and type of chart are pretty consistent throughout, and they’re just pretty average. I’m sure there are lots of dog images that could be used in place of the bars–dog bones/toys, leashes, dog food bags… and for pie charts, a dog food/water bowl could be used. Have fun with data viz! Just because it’s a graph doesn’t mean it has to be boring–on the contrary, it should be exciting.

There are a couple of missing punctuation marks here, such as at the end of the quote about owners believing their own dogs are the best-trained, and after the stat about rewarding good behavior. There also doesn’t need to be quotation marks around “percentage of dogs socialised as puppies.” Also, the variety of texts don’t seem to mesh well to me–they all have different feels.

Overall I’d give this a B–it stays focused on data viz, doesn’t have too much text and has cute original illustrations, but the designs of the data viz and fonts need some TLC.

It’s officially after Thanksgiving. This means that all the pre-Thanksgiving Christmas music you put up with in stores is now replaced by… seasonally appropriate Christmas music. That’s right; it would be difficult for you to complain about the prevalence of holiday music now that the typical shopping season has begun. But to get “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Santa Baby” out of your head, we’ve come up with some infographics about music, video games, movies and other forms of entertainment that will distract you for just a little while longer.

Lady Gaga: The Fame Monster

Okay, admittedly Lady Gaga is considered by some to be at least as bad as Christmas music, if not worse. “Poker Face” is just as likely to get stuck in your head as “Little Drummer Boy.” (Pa-rum-pa-pum-p-p-p-poker face.) But it’s much more danceable, anyway. And it hasn’t been stuck in your head for your entire life, whereas most holiday music is injected into your brain at birth. So give Gaga a chance this year. That way, if you must go shopping, you can just pop in your headphones and shop to the beat of a different drummer.

The Fragmented World of Digital Music

Speaking of Gaga, this IG tells us she’s got the second digitally-best-selling song of 2010 with “Bad Romance” and the fourth best-selling with “Telephone.” With the CD going the way of the dodo, or the cassette tape, digital music is our new medium. Purchase songs individually, or buy whole albums–the only kind of storage space you need is a drive, not a rack of albums. (And since gift cards are so hot these days, you can knock out a great gift for almost anyone on your list by purchasing a gift card or subscription for a digital music service!)

Doctor Who By the Numbers

What better way to say “Happy Holidays” than with the gift of television! (It’s also a good way to say “I’m in denial about the holidays,” as long as you’re watching on DVD, where there are no commercials.) Seasons or entire series of TV shows make great gifts, and they practically wrap themselves. Whichever Dr. Who you consider to be the real one, the show has an undeniable following. You can spend days watching Dr. Who instead of shopping, too! Or, even better, while shopping online.

Call of Duty Franchise

If you’d still like to forget that the holidays are upon us for as long as you can, Call of Duty is a great way to sequester yourself away from the mall rush! That is, if you haven’t foolishly put CoD Modern Warfare 3 on your gift list. Smart gamers pre-ordered and picked up on release day so that they could postpone the holiday craze. Those who’ve asked for it as a gift are crazed for a different reason. But if you’ve already made this n00b mistake, you could always return to an earlier game from the franchise. It’s not like they weren’t successful games or anything. Just look at how many military vehicles you could buy for the price of the franchise!

Kardashian Wedding vs. Average Wedding

Okay, since the time this infographic was created, this relationship has entered the annals of Stupid Celebrity Wedding History. But many of us latch on to celebrities’ lives as an escape from our own, so maybe you follow their weddings with fervor. Even though she’s returning to Ms. from Mrs., we can still marvel at just how extravagant this wedding was–and just how short of a marriage all that spending bought her!

There you have it–distractions from/accompaniments to the holiday shopping rush. Happy pre-holidays!

Infographics are about visualizing complex data and making it digestible and understandable. Even the simplest graphs can display information accurately – pie charts and bar graphs made in Excel are just as accessible as any chart on an infographic, so why bother cranking up the design on your infographics?

An important aspect of creating an infographic is making sure that your design is shareable. This is the difference between an infographic and a viral visualization (an infographic that leans more on eye-candy and niche statistics than traditional infographics do). Most of the infographics that are shared online are viral visualizations, and one of the reasons why is that they are more interesting to look at.

The infographic element that is perhaps the most difficult to creatively visualize is the ever-so-common pie chart. Here’s an example of a traditional pie chart. (Note: The data is imaginary survey data created for the purpose of this post.)

Conventional pie charts are simple as they are, but on great infographics they seem to have a little something extra. For this one, I dressed it up with a unique color palette and an attractive font (Knockout, one of my favorites). This is great for a simpler, B2B infographic, but it could use a little something more if I wanted to use it in one of my viral visualizations.

This chart has been reworked in the style of one of the infographics from our portfolio. Shrinking the smaller sections of the pie charts adds a level of depth to the graphic and makes the larger pieces more prominent, leaving more of an impression. The trick with this one is to balance the slices of the pie. This trick makes the chart a bit more interesting without completely abandoning a clean, simple aesthetic.

The hollow or “donut” pie chart is one of my favorites. It’s a bit more unique but still very simple. Leaving the white space in the center of the pie chart also creates a few more design opportunities – many designers will put accompanying copy inside of the graph, or call out the data with the percentages or an icon. There are a ton of possibilities here! I recommend this technique if you are overwhelmed with data that is best represented with pie charts–it allows your design to stay consistent and cohesive without being repetitive.

This final example is a bit more complicated, but when it’s done right it can work very well. We see it on a lot of viral visualizations. You still get your point across, but you leave a lot of workable white space and it is more visually interesting without being confusing. Notice all of the pieces begin at the same point–this chart is more of a hybrid of a bar graph and a pie chart. It works very well if you have to work with several data points.

All of these tricks can be done very easily. If you’re using Adobe Illustrator, make all of your charts using the chart tool and rework them after the fact–this way you don’t have to eyeball the data and your graph can stay accurate. Examples three and four can be done quickly using the “minus front” tool – a huge time saver!

Gobble gobble! It’s almost turkey day, a.k.a. Thanksgiving, in the United States. Other than thinking back on our country’s history, spending time with family and friends, and giving thanks for the good things in our lives, we pretty much consider Thanksgiving to be the day to stuff our faces with delicious food. So this week seems appropriate to round up some food-related infographics. Maybe they will give you some ideas about what you’ll want to eat this Thursday.

Turkey Hunting Infographic

While most people buy frozen or refrigerated turkeys at the grocery store, some still opt to hunt the birds themselves. Much like cutting down your own Christmas tree, we’d imagine that hunting your own turkey offers a similar, triumphant DIY feeling. However, given that the average turkey can run up to 25 miles per hour and fly up to 55 miles per hour, you’d have to be a pretty darn good shot! Still, it’s apparently the fastest-growing hunting trend in the United States, so happy hunting.

Thai Cuisine

Maybe Thai food is not the typical choice for a Thanksgiving meal, but sometimes spicier is better. Besides, what are you going to do if the oven breaks or the turkey falls in the trash? Order pizza? Have some class! Sweet and spicy Thai food would be a much more interesting recovery from disaster than boring old pizza. With this infographic, you can learn what regions your favorite Thai dishes come from, and how spicy they are compared to others. Quick suggestion: get the Khao Phat for Grandma Margaret. Her heartburn isn’t pretty.

History of Superfruits

Everyone has a favorite dish at Thanksgiving, and for some people it’s the cranberry sauce. (Yes, really.) But what about mixing it up a little this year? Blackberry sauce? Blueberry-black currant sauce? Cran-black-blue-strawberry-mangosteen sauce? (Whoa–too far; scale it back.) Check out some of these fruits that you didn’t even know were superfruits. It’s not just acai and goji berry; everyday strawberries are in effect a superfruit too! Open your mind and open your mouth for some different side dishes on Thursday.

The Fatty Truth About Fast Food

And if you don’t want to go the superfruit route, you can always go the deep-fried takeout route. Just look at how many of your daily calories are consumed in one fast food meal! Two common establishments might put you OVER that daily caloric limit, depending on what you order. So even if you decide not to cook the whole feast this year, you might want to still cook up those Brussels sprouts–get a couple veggies in, at least. And no, French fries don’t count as a veggie. Ketchup is not a fruit. Those wilted pieces of lettuce, pickles, onion and tomato might be worth half of a serving.

FarmVille vs. Real Farms

Sure, it feels rewarding to harvest an entire field of pumpkins in two minutes on FarmVille. But think about the back-breaking labor an actual farmer has to do to accomplish the same thing. Do you think it takes him two minutes? No way. (And the average farmer is male, while female players own 60% of the farms on FarmVille.) If there were as many farmers in America as there are FarmVille players, we probably wouldn’t have room for all the farmland! Thank a farmer while you’re eating this Thanksgiving, since you can’t eat your yield from a Facebook game.

There you have it. Food for thought!

(I know, we critique a lot. That’s why I said the most.)

It starts with “d” and ends with “ata viz.”

…

(It’s data viz.)

More specifically, we often end up commenting on a lack of data viz in the majority of infographics out there. While there are many components to a great infographic (see 8 Factors of a Good Infographic), data viz is number one on the list for a reason. Without visualized information, users are left with either a lot of text, a lot of icons, or both. And while these can be fun to look at and packed with useful information, they aren’t as efficient or as… awesome as a true infographic.

That said, not every idea that passes through the mind has the type of data that can be converted into charts, graphs, etc. Here are two general ideas we see a lot. They usually need some tweaking in order to earn the designation of “infographic.” Please note that:

1) This is definitely not exhaustive of difficult-to-visualize topics, and

2) These comments are generalizations. It is not to say that you can’t make a great infographic using these models. It’s mostly to say that we see a lot of these done poorly.

A History of…

We all know the timeline. It’s a concise and chronologically sensible way of displaying the evolution of something, from French cooking to paleontology to, say, infographics. And I won’t argue that it isn’t relevant or interesting, because that wouldn’t be true. A timeline can be an integral part of an infographic, but when it begins to dominate or become the entirety of the graphic, it’s a problem. Unless you get creative with it, timelines typically are comprised of text and maybe some accompanying icons/imagery.

That said, it’s entirely possible to re-imagine the timeline and include primarily visualizable data. “December 1, 2002: 71% of paleontologists eat bologna sandwiches.” (Okay, that’s obviously made up, but bear with me.) With points like that, your timeline can serve dual purpose as a history and a collection of statistical data.

If you do end up wanting to include a “traditional” timeline, don’t let it be the only component of your graphic. Check out this example of making your timeline properly proportional to your data viz.

If you have the opportunity, get creative with the design of the timeline itself. This football infographic made a helmet into a timeline.

# Ways to Do This/Reasons for This/Tips on This/etc. etc. etc.

Once again, this can be a great model for conveying strategies, tips, and ideas. A lot of the time, this is opinion-based information, though. Take, for example, weight loss tips. Everyone’s got an idea about the best way to lose weight, from drinking 20 glasses of water a day to holding your breath while hopping on one foot. Is there going to be a lot of hard data related to these? Not usually. If you can find a stat about the number of Brits who lost weight by chewing bubble gum, good on you! But mostly these structures are used for giving advice.

We’ve also seen this format used for excessive branding, which is another no-no for infographics in general. If you want to enact this format, be sure you’ve got some hard data to back it up, and make it visual! Here’s the wrong way to do it:

If you’ve got a stat or two to back up the opinions provided, you can make this model work. Link us to some good ones!

Also, let us know in the comments about some other models you’ve seen referred to as infographics.

The last couple of years have brought about hundreds of thousands of infographics on all sorts of topics, but some are still missing out on the benefits. Infographics are an easy and unique way to bring success to your business.

BRAND BUILDING

Infographics are a unique way to build your company brand. Launching an infographic – especially one that is well-designed, as well as unique and relevant to your target audience – can say a lot about your corporate identity. Integrating infographics into your design and content plan can do loads for your ability to show your audience who you really are and distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd.

Similar to blogs, infographics are also a great way to establish yourself as a thought leader in your field. They aren’t just for regurgitating established data–you can also build an argument with them. If you can utilize complex information that is relevant to the concerns and interests of your target audience, you can build trust among your subscribers and create clout for your product.

ACCESSIBILITY

Part of what makes infographics such an attractive marketing tool is their incredible ability to go viral. As our attention spans get shorter, the need to produce simple and accessible content becomes greater. In the tech and online marketing industry, the ideas being shared are becoming increasingly complex, but need to be expressed in simpler ways. Infographics have been shown (and continue) to be a near-perfect solution to this problem, conveying complicated data in a way that audiences can understand and are more likely to share. Displaying the information visually is much better than giving your subscribers a weighty reading assignment.

SHAREABLE

The accessibility of infographics is very closely tied in with another attribute that brings them so much success – shareability. Infographics, as well as niche blogs and social networks, are becoming increasingly popular. This creates an environment in which infographics will be shared freely and frequently. With the number of infographics that are out there, it may seem unlikely that your IG will get much love, but worry not. Case studies have shown that well-designed, simple infographics that contain useful (like IG about the effects of sitting at work) or topical and controversial (the Too Big to Fail bank IG) go viral easily. Even clever IGs on more niche topics get plenty of attention in the blogosphere.

LINK BUILDING

Marketers have been taking advantage of the viral capability of infographics and using them as link bait, and so should you. Providing useful information to share can build numerous back links to your site, which of course does wonders for SEO. The more your infographic is shared, the greater the opportunity to create inbound links to your site. It is that simple.

ALL IN ALL…

No matter which way you look at it, infographics have immense value as a marketing, SEO, and branding tools. If you haven’t already taken advantage, get on it – infographics are here to stay, but the sooner your business can benefit, the better.

Since infographics are typically designed for web use–though there are exceptions where they might be made for print–it only makes sense that there should be plenty of them about technology. This week we decided to dig up some that have been submitted to us in the past and compile them into one handy post. We look at some bygone eras in technology history, from the first mobile OS to the technological threats that endanger our use of the web. We also examine digital learning, how social technologies can be used within a business, B2B and B2C, and how the movie and tech industries function together. Take some time to learn a little more about tech today. Click any image to view the entire infographic.

Technology Enhances Learning

For those wondering whether the internet and computers are corrupting our youth, we direct you to this infographic showing that teachers (those people with experience in teaching our children) find great value in using the tools of technology in the classroom. If ever you find yourself asking “is our children learning?” you can derive great comfort from the fact that yes, they is indeed learning, and they is doing it on computers now. (Cheers to those who picked up the Dubya reference.) It seems that 57% of teachers feel digital learning is assisting student learning, while only 6% feel that textbooks are engaging. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the back problems kids get from carrying 40-pound backpacks to class.

Social Technologies

Social technologies can be used in several aspects of business–it isn’t limited to marketing. This infographic details how departments like HR and IT use social tech for time tracking and recruitment, while on the customer side you’d find more familiar approaches like surveys, sentiment analysis, competitor insight tools and more. Smartly divided between inside and outside business, this graphic, while lacking data viz, does provide insight into the various uses for the myriad social tech tools at our disposal.

The Evolution of Mobile Operating Systems

Can you remember back, all the way back to 1996? A time before tablets, iPhones, Facebook and even Y2K? Well, mobile operating systems were in development even way back then. That was the year the Palm OS launched, followed annually by Palm OS 2.0 and Palm OS 3.0. In the beginning, it was just Palm and Microsoft’s Pocket PC. Blackberry didn’t even enter the scene until 2005, swiftly followed by Android, iPhone, Symbian, Samsung, and a wave of evolutions following the establishment of these. This infographic takes you down techie memory lane and back into the dark ages, so to speak.

American Movie vs. Tech Industry (or, Love Bytes)

While this seems to begin as a rivalry, it really ends up as an analysis of two independent industries who have begun to grow together. Sure, the tech industry makes nearly 23 times more than the movie industry, but a lot of technology is focused around visual media–portable DVD players, tablets and iPhones that play video, TV screens in seat backs on airplanes and in cars… they’re quite intertwined. Besides, tech also provides solutions to the otherwise potentially unsolvable problems posed by imaginative screenwriters. This infographic shows the rise of the geek (as portrayed in cinema) from super lame to superhero and back down a little closer to earth.

Threat Morphosis: The Shifting Motivations Behind Digital Threats

Similar to the mobile operating systems infographic, this IG takes us back into the birth of tech threats. Who doesn’t have fond memories of the Love Letter worm of 2000? Back then, who wouldn’t want to open an e-mail proclaiming love, right? My, how times have changed. Four years later, 37,000,000 files were infected in one year, and from 2005 to 2008, Trend Micro saw a 2,135% jump in threats on the internet. Now we are cautious surfers of the world wide web, constantly on alert for new horrors and updating our anti-virus, anti-malware anti-anti software. Where might online threats be heading next?

Thanks for checking out these techie IGs. Keep up with us as we review new infographics, report on IG news and more!

In this ever-changing world in which we live in (thanks, Paul McCartney), it’s vital that we keep in mind humanity’s more destructive habits. Issues like global warming, endangered species, pollution and more threaten our planet as we know it. These infographics address the necessity of green living to a variety of degrees, so that we can try to preserve as much of this world in which we live in as possible. And add in as many unnecessary prepositions as we can. (Click any image to view the entire infographic.)

Benefits of a Hybrid

If you knew that the sleek, tiny Prius could save you over $4,000 per year on gas, you’d consider kicking your Hummer H2 to the curb, right? This infographic gives you a million reasons why hybrid cars are better for the environment and your wallet. The appropriately green background has sort of a recycled paper texture–a nice touch that ties into the theme. Consider how much you drive on a daily basis; maybe you can walk to the grocery store for that daily Red Bull instead of driving there.

UK Exhibition CO2 Emissions

All the travel by United Kingdom citizens for exhibitions alone in 2009 produced over 60,000 tons of CO2–that’s equal to a car circumnavigating the equator 9,023 times! Remember, that’s only travel related to exhibitions in the United Kingdom. It doesn’t include leisure travel, travel to and from work, or anything else. Suggestions on how to reduce the environmental impact of travel follow the statistics given in this infographic. Consider calculating your carbon footprint to find out how much carbon dioxide you use.

Is It Really Green?

Green products are incredibly marketable–9 out of 10 shoppers feel the environmental impact of a product is important to consider when making a purchase, and 7 out of 10 will pay up to 20% more for a green product than a regular one. However, many companies will advertise a product as being more environmentally friendly than it really is. This infographic shows how to tell just how green a material is and get around the hype. It’s amazing what misleading terms are legal to use, even when they don’t accurately describe the product inside.

UPS: Keeping the Blue Skies Green

UPS, a top shipping company, uses its own fleet of airplanes to transport packages around the world. All that travel is taxing on the environment, but they’ve got plans for reducing their CO2 emissions and other harmful practices to “keep the blue skies green.” By 2010, they’d already surpassed their fuel efficiency goals for 2011. See how one company makes plans to go green, and think about what your company can do to reduce its carbon footprint.

Top Countries With Endangered Species

The United States has a total of 1,203 endangered species (both plant and animal) making it the country with the second highest number of endangered species in the world. Our country has more endangered fish and mollusks than any other country in the world. Ecuador is the number one country, and it has nearly twice the number of endangered species. The importance of species preservation is emphasized here.

How Higher Learning Affects the Environment

Student use of paper and gas could be greatly reduced by taking online classes. Eighteen million students use 900,000 tons of paper, but doing school work on a computer would eliminate most of that. Use of gas to get to and from school would also decrease or cease. This infographic makes the argument that online schooling is better for the environment.

Is Cannabis Treated Unfairly?

Green… get it? This is a very different type of green, but it does tie in in a way. It compares cannabis to other street drugs and shows the cost of imprisonment for various drug-related crimes. While this infographic isn’t about environmentally friendly products, it does show the costs of another type of green living!

November 15 is America Recycles Day, so gather up those bottles and cans and contribute to a new wave of environmental consciousness. These infographics show how important taking care of our planet really is, and utilizing the tips provided to boost your knowledge of green living will be beneficial for everyone.

Happy Halloween! Looking out for your safety is always a good idea on holidays like these, but there’s one thing that may never be safe–your wallet! Read on for some spooky infographics on finances.

You know exactly what you’re getting into when you click on this infographic, and it continues to tell it like it is all the way down to the bottom. A $3,500 diamond ring paid with a $25 minimum monthly payment on a 14% interest credit card means, and we quote, “YOU WILL NEVER PAY THIS OFF.” The infographic has a great color palette and plays around with text size and alignment in a way that could be risky if not done right–so it’s a good thing they’re doing it right. A variety of bar and circle graphs keeps things fresh.

The Price of Money

While this graphic isn’t quite an infographic, it does provide some interesting information. For example, a good way to make a really small amount of money would be to melt down pennies from before 1982, when they were 95% copper! You can also make a trivial amount of profit from melting nickels. Well, it sounds like a lot more fun than those greedy change-counting machines in the grocery stores, right? These are the kind of facts you can whip out at cocktail parties to impress company. (Because who else there is going to know how much money you can make from melting a pile of pennies?)

15 Monster Money Wasters

Speaking of greedy change-counting machines, this infographic addresses some of the top money wasters around. Things like high-interest credit cards and bank loans are unsurprising, but near the bottom of the list is pets. Obviously it costs quite a bit of money to own a pet, but… money wasters? Cover your ears, Spot. Besides that, this infographic is a nice monstrous shade of green, and visually enticing. The data within is definitely worth noting, and some of it is expanded upon in our next infographic.

The High Cost of Counterfeiting

As a $600 billion a year industry, counterfeiting is great money for those doing it, and financially ruinous for those it exploits. This infographic boldly proclaims a variety of statistics on the incidences and impact of counterfeiting. Spoiler alert: it does not make China look very good. With a great deal of consistency in the type and design of data, The High Cost of Counterfeiting is a good example of how a bunch of research can be compiled into one cohesive infographic that takes just a minute or two to read, compared to the same amount of data in written form, which could be a few pages long. Watch out for those “Converse Ball Star Classics” on the shelves…

US Bank Crime Statistics

Commercial banks accounted for over 90% of financial institution robberies in 2010. The majority of people injured in the robberies were bank employees, who might now be thinking about transferring to a credit union or, better yet, a mutual savings bank. Still, as the money wasters IG will tell you, keeping your money at home means you lose out on the miracle of compound interest. Your $60 will still be $60 in 30 years if it sits under your mattress. It will just be a lot more wrinkly.

Summary

There you have it: the ups and downs of money, be it spending, investment, robbery, counterfeit products, or melting coins. A topic like money is something everyone is involved in, but not everyone wants to (or knows how to) wade through financial lingo to get the facts. Infographics like these are an accessible way for everyone to get the basic statistics they’re after without spending entire days sifting through glossaries and financial self-help books just for a definition. Not to mention they’re incredibly easy to share, and they really spruce up a blog or website.

(They’ve omitted their last names from public discussion because of the potential ties to illegality surrounding the movement.) What would be the biggest statement, the most symbolic way to express despair at the disparity between the 1% on top and the 99% on the streets? Andy and Ivan figured our currency would be an appropriate, ironic platform on which to display financial statistics about the distribution of wealth in the country. The methodology? Printing infographics onto dollar bills, bringing good old George Washington back into the forefront of political revolution.

Occupy George aims to circulate these bills through the economy, friends and Occupy Wall Street protests throughout the country as a metaphor for the unattainable currency of the rich versus the common currency of the 99%. Their efforts have brought infographics to the forefront of the news at a time when IGs are becoming ever more popular. People who didn’t even reside in the United States were e-mailing the pair, wanting to purchase the stamps. (Andy and Ivan won’t sell them, presumably because the whole movement is about monetary concerns anyway.) But now they’re asking for the public’s help in spreading the message.

“What started out in a one-bedroom apartment quickly spread, reaching millions of people not just at home but overseas,” they wrote in the Huffington Post. “Suddenly, two guys who wouldn’t categorize themselves as radical activists had somehow thrown themselves into the middle of a dialogue about the future of this country.”

As quickly as they became overwhelmed with support and media attention, the tide of the news has begun to carry Occupy George back out to sea. Ivan and Andy want the messages put forth by Occupy Wall Street to function like open-source networking–requiring collaboration and not placing privilege on any one group over anyone else. Whether through the distribution of Occupy George’s infographics, which are available online at no cost (with printing instructions), or other artistic modes of expression, they want to see the movement continue.

So, if you’re a participant in Occupy Wall Street–or maybe a quiet sideline supporter–you might be curious if Occupy George is legal. (By the same token, you might not care at all, but just in case you do…) There can be some fuzziness in the understanding of United States law regarding the destruction of American symbols like flags and currency. Some Occupy Wall Street protesters have been ripping, burning and otherwise desecrating American flags. That’s no longer illegal (but many feel strongly that it’s immoral). What about Occupy George? Is covering United States currency in images and ink illegal?

Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code, reads,

“[W]hoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.”

Okay, that sounds a little intimidating, but look at the language: “with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued.” The Occupy George movement is pushing for the distribution of these bills–how would the data contained in the infographics be spread in physical form if the money weren’t recirculated? As long as the money isn’t damaged to the point of uselessness, Occupy George is perfectly legal.

Printing on or stamping dollar bills isn’t anything new–remember the “Where’s George” experiment? It’s another creative example of employing national currency for experimentation within our legal rights. While Where’s George didn’t have anything to do with infographics, it did inspire some, and there’s plenty of available statistics about it.

If you’re feeling uninspired or too small to invoke a change in something you feel passionately about, Ivan and Andy want to remind you that you can make anything possible.

“We’re just two semi-delusional dudes that followed through on a nutty idea.”
