This is another instance of a guide that isn’t exactly an infographic. There are no numbers; it’s just a comparison to determine whether you should tackle furniture renovation on your own or enlist a professional. I do like the leather upholstery background texture and the color scheme, and think the guide makes some good points, so as a guide I would give it an A.

I’m not sure what numbers could be added to make this into an infographic — maybe percent of people that prefer DIY to hiring a professional for home projects, or average cost of reupholstering a fabric armchair DIY vs. hiring? But until some data gets in here, it wouldn’t be an IG.

There’s a lot of visual interest here with a mixture of illustrations and icons, a variety of font sizes and treatments, and a varied but coordinated range of colors. It makes it easy to want to see what’s coming up next in the design.

The benefits of solid patio covers are clear for a variety of scenarios and lifestyles, so it’s simple to discover whether a solid patio cover might work for the viewer.

Because the nature of this infographic doesn’t include any actual hard data, there’s no opportunity for data viz, which makes it difficult to judge as an infographic. However, it is a comprehensive tool for anyone hoping to determine whether they should consider a patio cover for their home.

As a tool for making a decision on covered patios, I’d give it an A! As an infographic, it would need some numbers and maybe a storyline — perhaps walking someone through the process of choosing a covered patio, sample price ranges, etc.

Starting off with an illustration of a pergola and an accompanying description of what one is is a great opener, as it wouldn’t be good to assume that everyone knows what they are. I wish that there was more color in this top section, though, to draw the viewer in. Since it is all muted neutral colors, it doesn’t provide much visual appeal, even though the illustration is well-executed. Still, I’ll admit that I didn’t know what pergolas were, by name, before seeing this infographic, so I definitely learned something here!

It would be nice for the timeline if reference dates were given, and the allocation of space reflected the relative timespan between each event. As it is now, it appears that the same amount of time passed between ancient Egpyt and the 1st century AD as between the Renaissance and Craftsman homes! This would require rescaling the section but would provide some interesting context. A few more related points on the timeline

I love the use of data visualization in “Why Build a Pergola?” It’s great to see not only in what order of importance the survey answers are, but by what margin each one is more important than the next. For instance, the difference between the #1 and #5 answer for reasons to create an outdoor room is just 15% — all of these reasons were very important to those that answered the survey. However, the popularity of different types of outdoor shade varies significantly: the difference between the #1 shade provider and the #5 shade provider is a full 40%! We wouldn’t get that context without the numbers and visual representation.

The colorful illustration of the flowered pergola at the bottom is a great ending — though again, it does make me wish that the initial illustration were more colorful, as this final illustration is the point in the infographic with the most (dare I say it?) “pop.” The predominant browns throughout the top 2/3 of the IG get a little dull.

In all I’d give this infographic a B: a little more even dispersal of color and a bit more context for the timeline could really make this great!

This makes a great tool for anyone wondering if it might be time to replace their deck. It gives detailed tips on what exactly to look for in multiple problem areas. The illustrations are simple but cute and do their job perfectly. (I’m a little worried about the guardrail missing from behind the illustrated character, though–hope she doesn’t fall off! Maybe a fence would help…)

However, there’s no data visualization here. There is only one number that could be visualized, anyway, but a solid infographic relies on data viz to tell the story. If we could get a few more factoids scattered within to up the numbers quotient, that would be helpful: what season is most common for collapse? What are the most and least durable deck woods? What percent of decks collapse from what problems?

Again, I love the concept surrounding the information here, and I think it’s definitely accomplishing what it set out to do, but as far as being a true infographic as we define them, it’s not really in the same category. That makes it hard to give it a letter grade–I’ll give it a B as a tool, but it’d have to be a D as an infographic since it lacks data viz and relies mostly on text.

I love the aesthetic of this IG! The sort of plaid, patchworky feel (especially of the text) is pretty unique and drew my attention in quickly. And really, if the overall design of an infographic isn’t eyecatching or unique, it’s going to be tough for a viewer to move through and absorb all the information. So right off the bat, great job there.

The way the data is visualized is working really well here, as a combination of iconography and charts. It’s very clear from looking what the top category of each chart is. It also does a very good job of keeping text incredibly minimal–the introduction is one sentence that only takes up 2 1/3 lines but sums up the data pretty well. (Although, if you’re going to get “texty” in any area of your infographic, it’s not uncommon to have a few sentences making up an intro paragraph to both explain the topic and build intrigue.)

I think maximizing data viz potential is important, so my only real critique is that a visual representation of the value adds of the top 5 home improvements would have been nice. (And perhaps it would be interesting if there were data on how much the average UK household spends on DIY home improvement each year?) Otherwise, it’s a solid piece that maximizes its use of space and covers its topic without overdoing it.

In all I would give this infographic an A! Short and sweet isn’t a bad thing in the world of infographics.

This is a pretty handy guide to show where you can save money and energy by fixing some common mistakes. It illustrates every energy-saving tip by showing the corresponding location in the house (which has a cute dollhouse aesthetic). Text is kept to a minimum, and the colors are bright and interesting. Tips are color-coded by room in the house for easy visual organization.

Because of the way this infographic is structured, the house is the central visual element. There’s nothing wrong with this really, except that it seems to be preventing the written data from becoming visual. A bunch of charts and graphs surrounding a colorful house might risk design overload, but there isn’t much in the way of visually representing the energy and savings. Lightbulbs indicate energy savings, but the actual amounts are just represented by numbers. I’d really like to see the percentages and dollar amounts shown in data viz.

As far as a letter grade, I’d give this infographic a B-. It’s doing a pretty good job of keeping the text down and is very visually engaging, but the numbers themselves remain just written numbers.
