This infographic was submitted to us by Rick’s Fencing.

There’s a lot of great information here about how to get your home looking great for spring (and into summer!). I like the lead-in with the outdoor scene and numbers representing each of the tips to come. For the most part, the visuals are working to explain without including too much text — the only exceptions are Repairing Fence Rails and Deck Cleaning (click here for more information on cedar decks). It would have been great to see each step that’s explained in Repairing Fence Rails show up as its own image. Similarly, the point about deck cleaner strength could have been shown with three annotated clocks — too strong, too weak, and just right, showing the associated lengths of time.

In fact, Fertilizing Your Yard could have illustrated crabgrass and fertilizer with pre-emergent for Early Spring, and broadleaf weeds and “weed-n-feed” fertilizer for Late Spring, too. The more work the illustrations can do to tell the story, the better!

Since there isn’t much data here, it’s hard to critique as a traditional infographic, but I think overall it does a good job of explaining how to get your spring ready the DIY way! I’d give it a B as a guide, since a few extra illustrations could remove some text.

This infographic regarding the steps along the way to home ownership comes to us from the people at Clickscape.

I really like how this infographic is designed to look like a board game similar to Monopoly. The idea of having different squares along a game track works really well for the topic.

The big problem with this is that it is almost entirely text-based and there is very little data visualization, so I have to give it a D. The few graphics along the way do a nice job of representing the general stages in the home ownership process. For example, the guy in a suit at the beginning shows that getting an agent is one of the first steps, and the magnifying glass over a house towards the end does a nice job of representing that a home inspection is one of the later stages. However, all the steps along the way are just blocks of text with no graphics to visually represent them. Having specific pictures that pertain to the individual steps on the game board could do so much to improve this because the concept behind the design is really cool.

The idea of having a beginning and an end to this game board works nicely to demonstrate the process of acquiring a home, and with some changes and additions I think this could be a really great infographic. As it is, there is simply little to no data visualization to assist in telling the story that this infographic is trying to tell. Reduce the reliance on text and add images to represent each individual step along the way for an improved infographic. Overall the concept and design of this infographic is good and I would like to see it carried out to its full potential.

This infographic, by BuildDirect.com, covers the overall cost of home ownership including all of the little details like homeowners insurance, utility rates, and more. The infographic starts with a simple list of national averages for mortgage ($1,687), homeowners insurance ($804), and purchase price ($304,000). It then goes on to break costs down by state, starting with average utility rates by state. Based on this information, Idaho has the lowest utility rates at 4.88 cents per Kilowatthour and Hawaii costs a whopping 21.45 cdents per Kilowatthour! Next, the infographic puts utility rates into further perspective by showing the national average utility rates when compared to the highest and lowest priced states.

The right hand side of the infographic breaks down home costs by state, with some interesting findings. For instance, homes cost more in Montana and other mountain states than many coastal states. This information is broken down further by the final graphs, which show the top 5 most expensive states to buy a house followed by the 5 lease expensive.

Overall, the information is well presented and the design is unique when compared with many other infographics. The only big aesthetic issue with this infographic is that it looks pieced together. This would be fixed by making the background of the infographic itself a different color than white, as the bits of white spaces make the columns very separate when they shouldn’t be.
