This infographic was submitted to us by Baines & Ernst, who also provided this description:

According to the new Infographic from Baines & Ernst – The Cost Of Celebrations – us Brits spend a whopping 2.4 billion on Valentine’s day! But that’s not the only celebration where we splash the cash…

This graphic is packed with stats and features some nice illustration. It’s an interesting choice of holidays to include (no winter holidays or graduations?) but it is good to have a specified focus!

It seems a little random to me whether some facts were included in the main body of the infographic or in the “Did You Know?” section at the botom. I think better differentiation would make this a bit more intuitive for the reader.

I also want to see data visualization here. The stats are listed and sometimes accompanied by iconography, but they are never visualized with charts, graphs, pictograms, etc. Data visualization is key to a great infographic — so much so, in fact, that without data viz, it isn’t really considered an infographic at all.

I’d make the design a little more focused, too. It’s a bit “busy” with objects jutting in from all sides, overlapping each other – it’s tough to know where to look.

In all I’d give this graphic a C-. It’s got the data down, but it needs organization, visualization and some de-cluttering!

This infographic was submitted to us by CouponCodes4U.

There’s a few pieces of good data viz here, and lots of great Christmas-y information! I like the background image and the adorable illustrations. However, some inconsistencies and missed opportunities are bringing the infographic down.

Some types of proofing errors really stand out on an infographic. One of these is the choice to include or exclude periods from the end of data points and fragments. This seems to be overlooked in lots of infographics out there, including this one. There are also capitalization issues: “Who’s giving Gifts?” “Santa Claus facts…” “Milk & Cookies” etc. Words seem to be capitalized at random in subheadings.

The designer should also decide if they’re going to write out full numbers or abbreviate. In “Milk & Cookies,” 114.8m is followed by 229,522,718. Either the first number should be changed to 114,800,000 or the second number should be abbreviated to 229.5m.

Additionally, the “Santa Claus facts…” section only has one fact about Santa. With the population info, I thought it might be estimating the length of time it would take Santa to reach each house, but it didn’t seem to relate. That’s an example of a title that doesn’t really introduce what’s to follow.

There are many missed opportunities for data viz — although there are dozens of numbers in this IG, there are only 3 instances of data visualization. There are dozens of fun holiday-themed ways to visualize this info, so I wish I could see more creativity and visualization here. How about candy cane bar graphs? Santa’s sleigh drawing a line graph across the sky?

In all I’d give this infographic a C. It needs more data viz, better organization, and more careful proofreading to become fantastic.

This infographic was submitted to us by CouponCodes4U.

I love the spooky clouds/haze used throughout and the dramatic Halloween pumpkin oranges, candlelight yellows, and blood reds. The subheading font is also great with the theme, though the main font used for the majority of the text is rather plain.

In the spirit of these thematic elements, I wish the data viz would incorporate it a little more. Maybe the person icons could be carrying bags of candy or have witch hats or vampire capes? And maybe the fake blood stat could be a bar graph in a syringe? Might as well take the theme to the extreme!

(As a side note, it’s pretty funny to see Barack Obama sandwiched between Nicki Minaj and Angry Birds for top costume choices. Bet he never thought he’d find himself ranking in between those two!)

I’m curious about the graph overlay through the infographic. Not that I don’t think it works, but it’s an interesting choice for the topic, too.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It serves its purpose and delivers the information in a concise manner, and it’s also pretty well proofread (with a few exceptions, like “Halloween” or “Hallowe’en” and the sentence casing of National Retail Federation). A little more creative data viz and some more fun with the main font could jazz this up into a great Halloween graphic!

This infographic was submitted to us by Psychology-Schools.com. Unfortunately, we were unable to post it by Halloween! They provided this description:

“Our infographic presents a lot of useful and funny information about Halloween. To be more specific, the infographic includes some not widely-known facts from the history of Halloween. What is even more interesting, it provides information about monsters and beasts from various cultures and mythologies, some famous superstitions and the explanation of them (you know that black cat is a bad sign, but why? You will know it after studying this infographic!).”

I like the spooky design of this IG, and it does contain some interesting facts. The candles representing Halloween spending are a really clever way to transform what would be a boring bar graph into something that fits the theme. It was also interesting to learn about all the mythical monsters from the legends of different countries.

The candle bar graph is my favorite part of the infographic, and it’s also one of only two examples of data viz in the whole infographic. This is very text-heavy, and an infographic should always rely on the visualization of data for the bulk of its information.

There were also a lot of misspellings and plenty of bad grammar. This makes it look like the infographic was thrown together haphazardly. The “History and Origin” section is an unfortunate beginning to the graphic, because it looks especially poorly designed.

This graphic would benefit from much more attention to detail, both visually and grammatically. It also needs much more visualization to correct the proportions. There are many statistics that are only represented via text right now. As is, I’d have to give this infographic a D.

The folks at Travel Match submitted this infographic to us.

This is really cute and creative. The use of data viz is great–the designer picked a nice way for the infographic to remain light and accessible without being weighed down by traditionally structured graphs and charts. Simple tools like altering the size of an icon to reflect the percentage or proportion keep data viz looking unobtrusive, even when there’s a lot of it–and there should be a lot of it. Some of my favorite examples here are the clock showing preferred departure times, the beds showing length of stay (the stubby 0.8% bed made me laugh–it looks so uncomfortably short!), and the diving board for preferred pool types. The summary at the bottom is also nice, since it condenses all the data into a snapshot of your typical British vacation. Text like this is completely admissible in an infographic. It isn’t telling us any new information; it’s just summing up points.

(Just as an aside, it was surprising to see that so many more people go on two week vacations than ten day vacations!)

I suppose my only critiques are that the typeface is a little ordinary and the overall design is fairly sketch-basic. I’m certainly not saying go crazy with 3D, but maybe some more textures, gradients or shadows in some places would liven it up a little. The way it’s currently designed is a rather busy and cluttered. These are definitely subjective critiques, though..

Given the extremely informative, well-organized, data viz-reliant nature of this infographic, it’s earned itself a B. Good work!

This infographic comes to us from All-In-One Garden Centre and features everything you ever wanted/needed to know about Christmas trees. Just in time for the holidays, the infographic shows different tree types in US vs UK households, where trees are grown annually, a brief history of Christmas trees, and more. Upon submitting this infographic, All-In-One Garden Centre had the following to say:

As Christmas comes flying around again we thought we’d shed some light on the world of Christmas trees. Most people who celebrate Christmas have a tree in their homes these days, but what do really know about them? We looked at: the most popular types of tree, where most trees are grown, whether artificial or real trees are most commonly bought and a size comparison of the most famous Christmas trees in the world. We’ve mixed in some interesting facts about Christmas trees too so hopefully there’s something for everyone here.

Overall, this infographic is OK, though I wish it provided more of a holiday related color pallet. They did do a good job of picking a topic that is timely, which should help with achieving some viral appeal, but is the information interesting enough?

In other news folks, this will be our only installment this week, as our team heads out to celebrate Thanksgiving and their long weekend (made longer by the Seattle snow storm).
