This infographic comes to us from the folks that Simply Business. Here is what they had to say about their submission on their blog:

The survey, which looked at some 75,000 businesses quoted by Simply Business between 2008 and 2010, also found that hairdressers and beauty salons are beginning to thrive – with the former now the most common type of non-hospitality establishment on the High Street. But retailers have fared worse, with clothes shops and newsagents showing a marked decline during the period.

I like the color scheme of this infographic, and the two major sections are visualized well – both the comparison chart and the heat maps are good ways to visualize data. That said, I gave this infographic a B-. There are a few critical inconsistencies in the design. The comparison chart features shop types have have ranks for both 2008 and 2010, but has “new entry” arrows next to it. It is not clear what those are doing there – it seems contradictory. Also, the heat maps are good, but many of the colors seem to blend together after the highest percentage. It looks like one individual region is being called out in each map, as opposed to showing a spectrum. There needs to be a bit more contrast for each of the colors on the heat maps.

It would be nice to see more quantitative data visualized in this infographic – there seems to be quite a bit of that covered in the study that was not included here.

This is also infographic is a good reminder that all infographics need to be proofread very carefully – it’s easy to be distracted by a good design and miss inconsistencies. That said, the design is good, but the data visualization needs a few tweaks.
