This is a nice quick guide offering tips to help make your teeth healthier right away! We can offer a few tips of our own on how to make this a better infographic, rather than just a guide.

To start, it would be excellent to have illustrations/icons accompanying each of the 8 tips, rather than every other tip. Text in an infographic should be aided by illustrations or data visualization whenever possible. There are ways to enhance the illustrations as well so that they help to tell the story on their own.

The first illustration is the only one that doesn’t really work toward the story. The image of the girl brushing her teeth (while cute!) doesn’t convey any info about soft bristles or toothbrush handle shape. The second image does let you know that there will be info about electric toothbrushes — but it could also help explain the point of Tip 3, that electric brushes don’t necessarily clean better than manual ones. Maybe an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush could be on a pedestal, like at a sporting event, but they’re both on the same spot and have the same medal? Just an idea for a visual metaphor to help show that they are equal!

The same goes for the floss. An illustration of how to use floss as described in Tip 7 would be more effective here.

It would be great to see some data interwoven here, too. What percent of people prefer hard-bristled brushes? How many times a week does the average person floss? Even without data, a few facts always help ground an infographic, and data helps add a little intrigue and relatability (such as “I floss way more/way less than the average person!”).

In all I’d give this infographic a C — the illustrations should be working a bit harder for the storyline, and I’d love to see some facts and/or stats scattered throughout. (Plus it could use a little proofing. Tip 4 is actually labelled as “2,” and there’s inconsistency in the use of periods throughout.)

This infographic was submitted to us by Medical Assistant Online.

I like the unique approach to background imagery on this infographic. It’s very dark and dynamic, incorporating burning paper, bright bricks and then falling down into blackness. It could be distracting, but the designer knows to make it less of a feature as the infographic progresses, so that the text and numbers can be the focus.

There’s a lot of good information here, and although it teeters on the edge of too much text, I think it manages to stay on the concise side. I’m not enamored with the traditional typeface choice, though: there are just too many fonts to choose from to play it so safe.

There are also some typos/inconsistencies that could use addressing. For example, “$2.7 Trillion” didn’t need to be capitalized, since it was part of a sentence. It’s immediately followed by, “That nearly $8,650″ — the second typo in a row, in the first factoid. That may stop some viewers from continuing on.

This infographic is also on the light side for data viz. The image of Texas with “x2″ on it sort of conveys the idea… but an image of Texas with a double-sized image of Texas underneath or next to it would be even better! The percentage of our population comprised of older Americans could have also been visualized, and the ratio of infant deaths chart could contain an actual numbered scale.

The more visualization of numbers, the better: that minimizes the amount of reading a viewer has to do to get the information.

In all I’d give this a B-. It’s got some qualities of an infographic, but could use some polish, too.

The review of the Stages of Pregnancy is a great tool for expectant mothers. The combination of tips and health guidelines helps keep them on track with each new stage. The illustrations are cute and simple and there’s a lot of negative space on the infographic to keep it from looking too cluttered.

While this graphic does have a storyline, there are no data viz elements, even in the few spots where there are opportunities for it, such as the advice to eat 300 extra calories per day and set the water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This graphic must be read to be understood, as there isn’t much in the way of iconography either. While the overall amount of text is low, it’s the only way to get information from the image.

(And to be picky, I had to scroll through a few times to notice any change in the character. I think maybe a side-view illustration would have made the pregnancy more clear, as she just appears to be getting a bit wider currently.)

As a tool I’d give this a B, but as an infographic it’s a C- because it needs more numbers and data viz.

There’s some pretty useful information on acne here. Acne can be incredibly distressing, so it’s good to show that those who have it are not alone! It was both surprising and understandable to see that 85% of Americans had dealt with acne at some point in their lives–understandable because of the varying hormone levels at different life stages, but at the same time, surprising that 15% of people didn’t have acne even during puberty!

Still, it’d be nice to see a little more data, and I’m sure there are more than 3 good ways to take better care of your skin. There are also some typo problems, the most glaring being the 79% figure. “79% of former acne sufferers said any self-esteem issues acne may have cause them are no effect them.” I’m not really sure what that’s trying to say. “No longer effecting them,” maybe?

The illustrations are cute, but I’m not sure what the relevance of the graph paper background is. It would seem to apply to infographics in general because they consist of graphs, but it doesn’t seem significant to the topic itself.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B: it’s got good data, tells a brief story and offers solutions. The design could benefit from some unique content and the copy needs to be proofed for errors in punctuation, capitalization and grammar.

This is a great guide for picking a career in nursing. It covers the wide range of different options available to those interested in pursuing health care–someone considering the field for the first time might not know that there are so many different types of nursing degrees and nurse positions! The text is clear, the color palette is consistent and not distracting, and the coverage of each potential path is comprehensive.

Unfortunately, this isn’t something we’d call an infographic, for the primary reason that there is no data visualization here. What is good is that visualizable data has been included: all of the text in red could be turned into a chart or graph showing the data instead of writing about it.

This would give the guide a bit more visual intrigue and lighten it up a bit, too. Being inundated with large amounts of text is not much different from reading a list or manual–infographics make the data fun to read.

A few examples of how the text might be visualized:

The statistic about 78% of NCLEX-RN test-takers passing could be represented by using a thermometer, mock-up medical chart on a clip board, pencil or other related instrument and showing that 78% as a portion out of 100.

Since there are 2.6 million RNs in the United States, and it’s said that that is the largest population of any health care occupation, it could be fun to see how many dentists, medical doctors, surgeons, etc. there are in comparison. These numbers could together be represented on a line chart as a heart monitor, or perhaps with different colored scrubs representing each occupation (either as a bar chart or having a portion of each of them shaded according to population).

As a guide I’d give this an A, as it’s very informative, but it will benefit from the addition of data viz before I could grade it as an infographic.

This is an awesome infographic that not only looks great but has a very good balance between text and data viz. There is a lot of creativity in this that I really appreciate and that works well with the topic of childhood obesity.

I give this an A because of the good data visualization and the story that it tells. It held my attention and there are too many good elements of it for me to list all the ones that I like, so I’ll cover some of my favorites. To start off, I really like the pie charts at the beginning that are made out of… pie! The next graphic, showing one in five infants drink soda, is nice too, because the contrast between baby bottles and the soda bottle is easy to understand. A couple more good elements are the ten forks with broccoli on three to show the number of high schoolers who eat vegetables daily and the three sports balls with one video game controller showing that one out of four kids doesn’t participate in any kind of physical activity.

There are a few places where the graphics don’t tell the whole story that the text is telling. For example, the vending machine section could be improved by having some sort of image representing each level of school that the data refers to. Also the statistic that two out of three high schoolers drink some sort of sweetened beverage every day could be more visually represented by putting, say, one water bottle next to two sports drink bottles.

Overall, this is a great infographic that really tells a story about childhood obesity. The design and graphics look good and are perfect for the topic. A few minor improvements and this would get an A+!

There are some pretty useful tips here for losing weight, targeting not just the two giant categories of “diet” and “exercise,” but getting into some common problems with each and what you can do to remedy those issues. That glass of water trick is definitely handy! I’m also sure many people don’t associate weight lifting with weight loss–but in that case it’s the fat loss that counts. Any weight gained from building muscle, I’m sure, is not a problem for most people.

While these tips for health success are handy and delivered concisely, they don’t make up an infographic. This is more text with illustration than it is actual data viz. The number 5 tip, for example, about drinking ½ to ? gallons of water every day, could have been visualized by showing a gallon jug that’s ? full. The rest of these tips, though, don’t contain data (in terms of numbers) that works well for infographics. If there were some statistics about weight loss in here, it would be easier to make this a true infographic.

Another problem is that the number 1 tip for losing weight is a product, which is displayed enormously and much more attractively than any of the other tips. While many infographics are designed to promote products, they don’t all sound quite as salesy, displaying their product as the largest and most important factor in the infographic. That risks discounting the information displayed within the infographic–people will just see it as a marketing ploy. The marketing aspect needs to be toned down (no pun intended) in favor of a stronger presence of data.

Overall I’d have to give this infographic a D: there’s no data viz and the promotional aspect is far too prominent.

This infographic (emphasis on graphic!) was submitted to us by Lloyds Pharmacy, and is kind of hysterical for being so serious.

This is quite well designed, and keeps a great sense of humor about some unpleasant things, like alcohol-related death and sexually transmitted diseases. The graphic representing “The Clap” hiding behind a bush and giggling… well, that’s wonderful. I laughed out loud! “I’m the most common,” it exclaims nearby. Again, hilarious. All the arrows are also pretty great, and the genital warts graph? Inventive. Definitely inventive. And gross.

The colors are bright, which corresponds to the IGs target audience, but it doesn’t go overboard. It isn’t so neon that you can’t look at it. The somber ending is a nice way to finish the infographic–while all the preceding information has been a light-hearted look at some of the negative things you might get into in your first week at university, there is a place for seriousness here.

I suppose the only thing I want more of in this infographic is just a couple of extra statistics–how many university students get the glandular fever (otherwise known as mono) each year? How far does the average UK student move from home for university? It seems to be steeped in statistics early on (which is good) but reverts to more info and fewer statistics near the end of the infographic. Because that’s all I really have to say here, I’ll give this studious infographic an A-!
