I love the spooky clouds/haze used throughout and the dramatic Halloween pumpkin oranges, candlelight yellows, and blood reds. The subheading font is also great with the theme, though the main font used for the majority of the text is rather plain.

In the spirit of these thematic elements, I wish the data viz would incorporate it a little more. Maybe the person icons could be carrying bags of candy or have witch hats or vampire capes? And maybe the fake blood stat could be a bar graph in a syringe? Might as well take the theme to the extreme!

(As a side note, it’s pretty funny to see Barack Obama sandwiched between Nicki Minaj and Angry Birds for top costume choices. Bet he never thought he’d find himself ranking in between those two!)

I’m curious about the graph overlay through the infographic. Not that I don’t think it works, but it’s an interesting choice for the topic, too.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It serves its purpose and delivers the information in a concise manner, and it’s also pretty well proofread (with a few exceptions, like “Halloween” or “Hallowe’en” and the sentence casing of National Retail Federation). A little more creative data viz and some more fun with the main font could jazz this up into a great Halloween graphic!

This infographic takes advantage of all sorts of spooky themes to break up the sections and make the text more exciting to read. I love the pumpkin pie chart. Oh, pumpkin pie! That’s cute… (For you organic food lovers, organic autumn and winter squash are coming into season for delicious holiday treats or pesticide-free jack o’lanterns!) Also, all the iconography and illustrations are great. The extreme use of color could be gaudy in many infographics, but I think because it’s for Halloween, it doesn’t bother me!

I do wish that data visualization was used to its fullest here. The pumpkin chart, as I said, is adorable. It definitely held my attention to read through the data. But the cauldron pie charts are a little less exciting (the pumpkin chart itself was shaped like a pumpkin, whereas these are simple circles) and the sections “American Participation and National Spending,” “How [M]any Americans Participate in the Whole Halloween Experience?” and “Halloween Spending for 2012″ don’t use any data viz. Infographics rely on data viz for visual interest and less emphasis on reading to get the information, so use as much as the design allows and make it creative — depending on your audience.

There are also a few organizational things to consider. The “How [M]any Americans” section could organize the activities by the frequency they’re practiced. Further, “Halloween Spending for 2012″ shows two figures that are average expenditure per person and one figure that is total spend for the whole country, though both costume and pet costume spending are labeled as “Total spend.”

Lastly, there are some capitalization inconsistencies throughout.

All that said, I still love the creative over-the-top design, and there is some great information here. It could just use some proofreading and some more thought to data viz and consistency to make it great. I’d give this infographic a B- overall.

“Our infographic presents a lot of useful and funny information about Halloween. To be more specific, the infographic includes some not widely-known facts from the history of Halloween. What is even more interesting, it provides information about monsters and beasts from various cultures and mythologies, some famous superstitions and the explanation of them (you know that black cat is a bad sign, but why? You will know it after studying this infographic!).”

I like the spooky design of this IG, and it does contain some interesting facts. The candles representing Halloween spending are a really clever way to transform what would be a boring bar graph into something that fits the theme. It was also interesting to learn about all the mythical monsters from the legends of different countries.

The candle bar graph is my favorite part of the infographic, and it’s also one of only two examples of data viz in the whole infographic. This is very text-heavy, and an infographic should always rely on the visualization of data for the bulk of its information.

There were also a lot of misspellings and plenty of bad grammar. This makes it look like the infographic was thrown together haphazardly. The “History and Origin” section is an unfortunate beginning to the graphic, because it looks especially poorly designed.

This graphic would benefit from much more attention to detail, both visually and grammatically. It also needs much more visualization to correct the proportions. There are many statistics that are only represented via text right now. As is, I’d have to give this infographic a D.

We decided to break down and create a Halloween infographic. Why? Because it’s about time someone brings attention to the fact that there are tons of “sexy” Halloween costumes out there that really shouldn’t be sexy at all. For instance, when did Freddy Krueger and Leatherface become sexy?? Somehow, these are top sellers in the sexy Halloween costume arena.

While there are probably hundreds of sexy Halloween costumes that should not have been dubbed “sexy” at all, we worked hard to narrow our list to our top 7. These 7 include the following:

All in all, this isn’t your typical infographic, as it doesn’t state any data or real facts (other than the intro), but we thought it would be a fun way to ring in the Halloween season, so we hope you get some laughs out of it!

ZippyCart.com has put out another cool infographic that relates to e-commerce by providing insight into Halloween sales and trends. Halloween is a critical point in the year for many e-commerce retailers, and for some it is the peak season for generating revenue. Halloween e-commerce sites have been promoted over the last month, as they want to be top of mind when consumers go to search for Halloween costume ideas in 2010.

This Halloween infographic starts out by looking at the participation level over the past three years. There is a direct correlation to sales as more people participating equals more Halloween costumes purchased. In 2009 Halloween participation declined, which was most likely due to poor economic conditions. Spending also declined in 2009. However 2010 is looking better, as things are expected to pick back up, which should equate to healthy online sales for Halloween costumes and decorations.

Next this infographic dives into the four most popular categories which are driving consumers to spend money at Halloween. These include Halloween costumes, greetings cards, candy, and decorations. When it comes to spending by age, consumers 18-44 all spend about $68 each. However the older demographics are less likely to spend money for Halloween. Another interesting section on this infographic is about the top search terms that people are using in regard to the Halloween holiday. Seven out of the top ten terms relate to costumes, and this makes sense since it is the most important piece to celebrating Halloween.

Overall this is a really fun and informative infographic that helps you better understand Halloween sales and trends. I am not sure if the data is out there, but it would be cool to learn more about recent Halloween costumes that flopped and had poor sales. There are a lot of odd Halloween costumes that come out each year, and not all of them can be top sellers.
