This infographic is brought to us by the shiny happy people at Cats4Gold.

What do you get when you combine gold and cats? Either a soft pretty blonde cat, or a cat-shaped hunk of metal, or a cool infographic. Because, “let’s face it–gold is just an over-hyped yellow metal.” The kitties leaping and running and napping around this infographic are pretty darn cuddly looking, and the information provided here is pretty darn interesting. Did you know cats are one of the oldest mammals on Earth? Or that a seven year old cat has been awake for just two years of its life? And who can resist all the cute kitteh-speak?

Looking past the cuddly kitties and the factoids, though, this “infographic” could use a lot more data visualization. There are lots of visuals, but they aren’t representing much in the way of data. Sure, it would fill up the entire infographic to display 420,000 kittens, but there are other ways to do it than just writing out the number. Maybe 42 kittehs multiplied by 10,000? I’m also fond of the hand poking the gold bar, but again, it’s more a representation of a textual joke than it is showing information: the facts about hearing or smell would have been more relevant.

The 30 mph fact is portrayed nicely, if obviously, but it’s so small you almost wouldn’t know the speedometer reads accurately. The sleeping graph, in addition to being a little freakishly adorable, is also one of the best examples of data visualization in this IG.

I’m also not sure about the color scheme here: what are the peach and blue doing for the IG? I like the matching gold and cat at the top, though. The editing is pretty good here, but one thing is throwing me off: the top two subheadings. I want “Why do people prefer cats to gold?” to talk to its corresponding subheading, but instead the response is, “But cats–WOW!” I like it, it’s funny, but it doesn’t read correctly. Maybe “Why do people prefer cats to gold?” and below that two subheadings: “Gold?” and “Cats!” or something of that nature.

All in all very cute, polished, and informative, but this IG needs data visualization to make it shine.

This is another infographic that comes to us from MoneyChoices.com, who also created the Rise in Silver infographic that we posted last Friday. Upon submitting the infographic, the folks at MoneyChoices.com said the following:

In times past gold diggers craved the elusive discovery of gold nuggets. Today, just about everyone wears it and its a wise stock for any investor seeking to preserve purchasing power. But have you ever thought about which countries have the biggest gold reserves and which countries are producing the gold? Jump to the infographic and get to some interesting facts and factoids about the glistening substance.

Why we created it
Because we knew there would be some surprises in which countries mine the most gold and just how much gold is held in reserves by all the big players.

Our sources
We sourced most of the data for the infographic from publicly available government data, although that drew quite a bit of speculation from investors who doubted the reliability of governments to tell the truth.

About Money Choices
Money Choices was setup in 2008 as a comparison website for Australians to compare all types of financial products. It sounds boring but we can save you a lot of money by finding you a better bank account, credit card or loan.

Overall, they did a good job with this infographic. Just looking at the infographic, you’ll know it’s about gold because of the background chosen and the icons. Unlike the silver infographic of theirs that we posted last week, this on is longer and therefor answers more questions. I think it’s a pretty good job given the topic.

Do you ever get tired of those cheesy we buy your gold commercials on TV? I’ll be honest, they drive me crazy because they seem as if they were filmed in the early 90′s and the car salesman-esque narrator makes me never want to trust putting my gold into an envelop, mailing it to some random address, and hoping that I get money in return. I guess it works out, since I don’t actually own any gold anyway, but that doesn’t stop these commercials from being incredibly annoying. All that said, this infographic does a good job of showing just why those commercials exist, because gold is a universal currency that everyone is adopting, especially in today’s economic conditions.

The infographic begins by showing the price of gold over the past 30 years, which is also how those commercials start. One interesting fact about price changes is detailed in the second bar graph of the infographic, with a summary stating:

The price of gold is determined through trading in the gold and derivatives markets, but a procedure known as the Gold Fixing in London, originating in September 1919, provides a daily benchmark price to the industry.

The Infographic then tells the story of gold, first by showing what nations produce the most gold and next by showing a detailed history of gold. The infographic closes with some “golden facts” including an explanation of the Karat system.

Overall, this is a highly informative infographic that does a good job of explaining the real value of gold. Most infographics that include a history of anything are often just time lines, so I am always a sucker for an infographic that can throw in a time line while still providing a great deal of other information.
