This infographic was submitted to us by Bank of America. They also provided this description:

Supporting hunger relief programs is a top priority for Bank of America. They have been working to end hunger since 2008 with donations and volunteering.

This graphic has some cute illustrations and showcases a lot of great information. We get a great overview of how much the company is doing to fight hunger and food insecurity in the United States. Plenty of iconography is used to illustrate the points being made… but what I’d love to see is all these excellent numbers effectively visualized.

16 million pounds of food could be shown as 16 ears of corn — or 1 ear of corn representing 1 million pounds of food, next to another ear of corn (the one on the scale) 16x larger than the first ear. Similarly, the 5 million pounds of fresh produce out of 16 million total could be shown as five fruits and vegetables, while the remaining 11 could be boxes, cans, juice, milk, etc. For the Mt. Everest comparison, it’d be great to see 6.95 containers (one for every hundred containers) or even 69.5 small containers (one for every 10 containers) stacked up next to or against Mt. Everest.

The point of data visualization is to take the written number and translate it into something that can be understood with the eye, without reading. That way, the only necessary reading would be of a key, or a brief descriptor for context. If that were introduced into this infographic, it would be an even more powerful way of showcasing the important numbers.

As an infographic, I’d have to give this a C-, because there’s no data visualization. However, the text-light data, rich with numbers and possibilities to include data viz, makes it a great candidate for improvement!

Gobble gobble! It’s almost turkey day, a.k.a. Thanksgiving, in the United States. Other than thinking back on our country’s history, spending time with family and friends, and giving thanks for the good things in our lives, we pretty much consider Thanksgiving to be the day to stuff our faces with delicious food. So this week seems appropriate to round up some food-related infographics. Maybe they will give you some ideas about what you’ll want to eat this Thursday.

Turkey Hunting Infographic

While most people buy frozen or refrigerated turkeys at the grocery store, some still opt to hunt the birds themselves. Much like cutting down your own Christmas tree, we’d imagine that hunting your own turkey offers a similar, triumphant DIY feeling. However, given that the average turkey can run up to 25 miles per hour and fly up to 55 miles per hour, you’d have to be a pretty darn good shot! Still, it’s apparently the fastest-growing hunting trend in the United States, so happy hunting.

Thai Cuisine

Maybe Thai food is not the typical choice for a Thanksgiving meal, but sometimes spicier is better. Besides, what are you going to do if the oven breaks or the turkey falls in the trash? Order pizza? Have some class! Sweet and spicy Thai food would be a much more interesting recovery from disaster than boring old pizza. With this infographic, you can learn what regions your favorite Thai dishes come from, and how spicy they are compared to others. Quick suggestion: get the Khao Phat for Grandma Margaret. Her heartburn isn’t pretty.

History of Superfruits

Everyone has a favorite dish at Thanksgiving, and for some people it’s the cranberry sauce. (Yes, really.) But what about mixing it up a little this year? Blackberry sauce? Blueberry-black currant sauce? Cran-black-blue-strawberry-mangosteen sauce? (Whoa–too far; scale it back.) Check out some of these fruits that you didn’t even know were superfruits. It’s not just acai and goji berry; everyday strawberries are in effect a superfruit too! Open your mind and open your mouth for some different side dishes on Thursday.

The Fatty Truth About Fast Food

And if you don’t want to go the superfruit route, you can always go the deep-fried takeout route. Just look at how many of your daily calories are consumed in one fast food meal! Two common establishments might put you OVER that daily caloric limit, depending on what you order. So even if you decide not to cook the whole feast this year, you might want to still cook up those Brussels sprouts–get a couple veggies in, at least. And no, French fries don’t count as a veggie. Ketchup is not a fruit. Those wilted pieces of lettuce, pickles, onion and tomato might be worth half of a serving.

FarmVille vs. Real Farms

Sure, it feels rewarding to harvest an entire field of pumpkins in two minutes on FarmVille. But think about the back-breaking labor an actual farmer has to do to accomplish the same thing. Do you think it takes him two minutes? No way. (And the average farmer is male, while female players own 60% of the farms on FarmVille.) If there were as many farmers in America as there are FarmVille players, we probably wouldn’t have room for all the farmland! Thank a farmer while you’re eating this Thanksgiving, since you can’t eat your yield from a Facebook game.

There you have it. Food for thought!

This caffeinefographic comes to us from Xaluk.com. (See what I did there?)

Okay, the subheading on this infographic is hysterical. We’re based in Seattle. We know these people. We stand behind them in line alllll the time. They order this stuff with a straight face, but I get embarrassed when my coffee order has more than four words. Single tall soy latte is about as far as I’ll go without blushing.

That said, there’s some rudimentary problems with this infographic. The Venn diagram is a good idea, but this one gives no indication of proportion. Prepare yourself–I’m not just a Seattleite, I’m a former Seattle barista.

Take the intersection of milk, milk foam, and espresso. What you’ve got grouped there, in the same section, is cappuccino and latte. The problem? Cappuccinos typically have about as much milk as foam (don’t worry, I’m not going to get into wet versus dry cappuccinos), while lattes are nearly all milk with a topping of foam. Because this Venn diagram isn’t taking amounts into consideration here, someone who really didn’t know would assume that cappuccinos and lattes are exactly the same.

This infographic would benefit so much from giving individual drinks their own diagrams. One could see, by amount of overlap, the proportional difference between lattes and cappuccinos. You could also include more details, because here’s a world of difference between an espresso macchiato and a latte/caffe macchiato. (Told you this was going to get bad.) Sure, it’s created for people who don’t order insanely specific drinks… but there has to be some differentiation here. Getting a little more specific would make it stronger.

If the infographic was set up that way, picture this–a clueless coffee newbie is standing anxiously in line, waiting to get to the counter and play 20 questions with the barista about what the heck to order. Then he remembers this great infographic that shows him exactly what goes into every drink! He pulls it up on his smartphone, realizes that what he wants is called a split-shot skinny latte, and orders confidently. (That’s not too needy of a coffee order, as they go.)

Until this infographic gets much more detailed, I’ll have to give it a D. It isn’t telling the whole story, but at least there’s no unnecessary text. If all I was familiar with was drip coffee, I would know more than when I’d started–but not much more.

This infographic is from the folks of FriendsEat.com. Everyone loves bacon, and this infographic dishes out 25 facts regarding the beloved breakfast meat. This one is pretty decent- clean, tri-color pallette that utilizes the colors of the American flag, substantial factual information, and a humorous story to tell. This infographic is, however, considerably text heavy and would leave the viewer confused and disinterested if the text were to removed.

The first few images are great. Especially the aircraft carrier graphic, which uses a real-life comparison to show just how much people really love to eat bacon. But from there on out, the infographic seems to lack solid data visualization. It feels a bit forced and crowded. An example: with the statistic stating that one pig supplies over 23 pounds of bacon. A great way to have shown this fact is perhaps with a scale, with a pig on one side and a graphic visualization of 23 pounds of back on the other. Instead, the graphic as it is just looks like a pig and big long piece of bacon, with no further quantification. That theme seems to continue throughout the Bacon infographic, as many of the graphics are left hanging or are relying to heavily on text.

To be more effective, this infographic could utilize pie charts and bar graphs to help truly visualize the data. Despite its shortcomings, this infographic does utilize a clean color pallette and keeps the dimensions within reasonable limits. Apart from the aircraft carrier visual, there’s no real kicker, nothing that really makes you say “Wow!” I’d give this infographic a C overall.
