Here in the great Pacific Northwest, we’re used to working with people who march to the beat of their own drum. More and more, we see homeowners who want to make their homes stand out from the rest with a custom fence design that’s unique to them.

There are many cookie-cutter fence styles to choose from, but our favorite projects are the ones where we’re asked to get creative and dream up a fence design we’ve never built before. All it takes to create a personalized custom fence is a little imagination and a willingness to think outside the box.

To encourage more creativity in fence design, we created the following chart, which showcases out some of the ways you can customize a standard privacy fence.

This is a nice guide to put an image to the description of fences. If you’re flipping through a guidebook, how are you going to know what a Louvered Horizontal fence looks like? So this is a quick way to put a name to the design in your head, or a design to the name in front of you. There are some fun tips for how to add a bit of visual interest, too.

This isn’t a traditional infographic, however, as there is no data. It’s a visual guide, but with no data visualization it stays just that: a guide. (That said, it might be fun to see some more tips about painting or staining your fence, etc. beyond just the different building styles of privacy fence.)

Some statistics about % of households with privacy fences and more would add a numerical data element to the design and help it toward becoming an infographic.

This is a quick and easy way to learn about what common dangers are threatening your fence. The iconography adds some interest, the woodgrain fence background spruces things up (no pun intended!) and the photo at the center is, well, a really nice looking wood residential fence!

There is only one example of data viz (post holes being two feet deep) but there’s only really one opportunity for it, anyway. We encourage numbers-based data and data visualization, so any further research into the percentage of fences that have to be rebuilt due to A, B and C would be interesting to know, or the average lifespan of a fence.

Although this infographic relies primarily on text to tell its story, I wouldn’t necessarily call it text-heavy, which is good. Graphics should shoulder the majority of the story whenever possible, but instances of text should remain short, and this infographic accomplishes that pretty well.

I also appreciate a well-proofread infographic, and this one does a pretty darn good job of it. The only thing I noticed is that the second Weather bulletpoint lacks a period at the end.

All in all I’d give this infographic a B-: it’s clean and does its job. But as a tool for assessing the hardiness of your fence, it gets an A. If I didn’t live in an apartment several floors up, I’d be checking my own fence for these hazards!
