This infographic was submitted to us by MassachussetsCriminalDefense.net

This infographic does a pretty good job of keeping text minimal and utilizing data viz where possible. I love the speedometer imagery–it’s my favorite section of the infographic, although I must admit the injury/no injury section took quite a while for me to understand, as I was looking for the percentages to add up to 100 before I realized that they were percent of ALL crashes, that were alcohol related, that resulted in injury or no injury. Maybe that would be clearer as two separate graphs–what percent of all crashes are alcohol-related, and then what percent of alcohol-related crashes only resulted in injury/no injury.

The estimated cost section is also pretty effective at showing that your insurance costs are the greatest risk–though if there was some data about the average medical cost of a DUI crash, that would be impactful too.

There are a few typos to note throughout, where periods are misplaced or words misspelled (responsibile), but otherwise it’s a pretty good brief overview of what might happen to someone driving under the influence. I would suggest adding an average number of drinks to reach/surpass the legal limit–this would of course have to be based on a particular body weight, age, height etc. but would still be useful to give an idea. Two drinks? Three?

Overall I’d give this infographic a B–it’s informative without being overbearing, too long, too sparse, too text-heavy or lacking in data visualization.

This infographic was submitted to us by Creditplus, who provided this description:

According to the timeless Leonard Cohen’s song, there is a war between the man and the woman. In this war there is a common battle that continues to rage, one that will finally decide who are the better drivers, men or women. This infographic produced by Creditplus should finally put an end to the fighting.

Unlike emotions, stats are cold and pragmatic – we’ve looked at the three most obvious factors that set apart good drivers from bad ones: the driving test, parking abilities and the number of serious crashes they are involved in. As often happens with these studies, the results are bound to be argued by the losing side. Questions such as the number of drivers per gender and the miles driven per year are likely to be asked, so we have provided these stats as well. There could only be one winner in this battle and although they are unlikely to win the war, it will be one step closer for one of our genders.

This offers a really clear depiction of who’s who in the driving world in the UK. The illustrations are cute, the design is simple and easy to interpret. The humorous copy really helps move the storyline along, too.

But what I’d love to see is more data visualization here! While the designer shows via body language/facial expression and written numbers who wins each round, there is no visual representation of the numbers themselves to bring that message across.

So 49.6% of males pass their tests, but only 43.3% of females do? Make the male proportionally taller, or the box containing “49.6%” larger/longer. The visual representation of numbers is what makes infographics so easy to read. As is, looking only at the visuals, I’m coming away with who won, but not by how much.

The only spot with actual data viz here is the total number of drivers. More of that type of viz and this IG could be great!

I’d rate this a C as an infographic, because of the lack of visualized data, but I’ll give it an A as a tool, because it’s so darn cute and funny!

This infographic submission comes from the ladies and gentlemen over at Consumer Car Reviews. More and more hybrids are scooting around town, and this infographic is designed to show just how effective these cars are in saving money and the environment. The color scheme is simple, clean and conducive to it’s “green” message. The graphs, charts and images used to show relevant savings are effective, and require/use little to no text to explain.

The first three images look great. Using the LA to Sydney image to convey just how much Americans drive, in terms of actual distance, is impressive and effective and a great lead. Again, the next two graphs are effective in explaining how much gasoline Americans use, particularly the swimming pool comparison. These types of graphics help put hard data into perspective and give readers a real-life reference point for the data. They also do not require much textual explanation, which is the whole point of an infographic.

Unfortunately, the last half of this infographic seems to lose some steam. Providing the statistic that it would take almost 8 years to break even on the purchase price of a hybrid actually takes away from the pro-hybrid discussion and hurts the message overall. There’s likely a better way to show this information, perhaps using Colorado’s tax rebate program for hybrid purchases as an example in a bar graph. For example, showing the cost of initially purchasing a hybrid (factoring in the tax rebate) and the gas savings over a set period of time when compared to the total cost (purchase price and cost of gas over the same period of time) of a regular non-hybrid vehicle.

The gasoline cans portraying the potential national gas savings also lose some of their potential. Again, huge numbers like 74 billion gallons are more effective when put into a real-life comparison, such as a giant tank filled with gas with the Statue of Liberty or similar landmark next to it for size and volume reference.

Overall, this infographic does a nice job with getting the information and the story across to its readers. I’d give this infographic a B, as it is mostly data driven and clean but some of the data visualization falls short of its potential impact.

This infographic, created by MostercycleInsurance.org, provides information about the worst and best states for drivers in the United States. The infographic is using data from a recent survey of U.S. drivers, which determined whether or not they would be able to pass a DMV licensing test if they had to take it today. Throughout the country, 10-25% of Americans would have failed, based on survey results. The infographic takes this information to create a chart of the best and worst states to drive based on their overall score, with only Oregon scoring in the 90th percentile. Overall, DC and Rhode Island are the worst states to drive, followed by Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

The infographic itself is a little hard to digest as there is quite a lot of content in the top half, making it something that many won’t scroll down to continue viewing. Infographics are meant to take complex data and make it easy to comprehend by using a variety of images to simplify things. This infographic is very wordy and doesn’t accomplish this overall goal, which is unfortunate as some of the data is very interesting.
