“Driving distracted causes thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of accidents
each year. Using cell phones while driving is an enormous problem and if we do not raise awareness and do something to stop it, the number of people killed or injured as a result of driving distracted will only increase every year. Make people aware of the dangers of distracted driving by sharing this infographic with your friends and family.”

The design on this infographic is really clean and inviting. The color palette is nice and really stands out from the asphalt gray background. (Nice touch on the death dice, by the way.) The dashboard visualizations for age ranges and fatalities/injuries are well-executed and effective examples of data viz, as is the bar graph about the types of vehicles involved in incidents of cell phone distraction.

The “types of distractions” section is a little confusing, only because there is data viz throughout the infographic, and the bars coming out from each light are different lengths. This cause me to momentarily confuse the image with a bar graph, and I thought it was trying to illustrate that more external distractions cause crashes than internal, and both more than inattention (which, by the way, is spelling incorrectly on the IG). But really, it seems that they’re only different lengths because of the lengths of the words. Just something to consider.

This infographic does a very good job of balancing negative space with info, and not including too much text. It tells its story, gets it across in a comprehensible way, and doesn’t waste time. Overall I’d give it an A-. Great job!

This infographic comes to us from the folks at CompareAutoInsurance.com. Here is what they had to say about their infographic:

View national statistics on driving distractions, what drivers are at the highest risk, common distractions and the percentage of injury crashes reported to have involved driver distractions.

It is interesting to see this infographic after having posted another that uses a lot of similar data. It’s always interesting to see the ways that different designers interpret information.

Although the design is decent and the color palette is nice, this is not an infographic in the traditional sense since none of the data is visualized. The design of this infographic primarily relies on typography. Since the infographic is text-driven, the reader has to spend tons more time getting the information. Infographics are supposed to be able accessible and consumable, which means the reader should be able to get a lot of information from them quickly. All of the data in this infographic could easily be visualized should the designer chose to do so: any percentage can be represented by a pie chart, and any number can be represented with icons. I think that if these improvements are made, this infographic would be a whole lot cleaner and easier to understand.

All that said, this infographic has a lot of great information. I especially like the “Who Are the Highest Risk?” section – it’s a interesting way to organize the data. Overall, I would give this “infographic” a C, which could easily be bumped up to a B with more data visualization.

McIntyre Law researched distracted driving statistics and laws nationwide and discovered some alarming information about driver safety. Although laws banning cell phone use while driving are on the rise, distracted driving deaths are not decreasing. Research revealed in this infographic suggests distracted driving is more of a problem than is reported.

Because drivers have control over whether or not they become distracted, this is one of the easiest types of motor vehicle accidents to avoid. As knowledge about the dangers of distracted driving increases, McIntyre Law hopes that distracted driving injuries and deaths will decrease.

I like the overall design of this infographic. The color scheme is very simple and pleasant, and the data visualization is pretty good. The only sections that could use more data visualization are the “common and growing problem” section and the one on distracted driving lawsuits. The dollar amounts could be represented visually and there could be a little more detail on each of the lawsuits. The entire “common and growing” section could be reworked to visualize the info on number of texts per person and the different types of distracted driving.

There are a couple of things that do not really work with this infographic. The heading is much too large and the image doesn’t really fit with the rest of the theme of the design (though it is appropriate for the subject of the infographic). The other image that doesn’t really work is the iPhone. It’s a creative way to display the data and it fits in with the theme, but it comes at the expense of another opportunity to data visualization rather than a bunch of text.

This infographic is headed in the right direction with the design, but needs to move away from all of the text and include more data visualization overall.
