This is really attractive. It uses the yellow police tape feel without being heavy-handed, employs cute iconography for a non-cute subject and is just darn interesting. Even if we don’t all admit it, nearly everyone is fascinated by death and murder. Getting an inside look at how these crimes are investigated is pretty cool.

There are great illustrations throughout–simple and clean, but that just adds to the aesthetic. The visuals on passage of time and trajectory of blood drips are excellent, and the info remains engaging. I’m especially into the info about forensic entomology… I had to exclaim out loud that moths feed on body hair. Yuck!

If I had to suggest anything to edit, I’d recommend trying to trim down the text in the intro paragraph and in “How to Do an Autopsy”. Because the columns of text are so narrow, it makes even the shortest amount of text look lengthy. “Stomach Contents” is two relatively short sentences, but looks like a large block of text due to formatting. I get stuck looking at the cute illustrations, and end up just skimming the descriptions.

Overall I’m a big fan of the aesthetic of this IG, and I’ve give it an A. Great work on a gross topic!

I really like the ominous fortune teller/crystal ball image at the top. It’s kind of funny because of the belief that fortune tellers use extremely likely, vague statements–one could imagine a fortune teller using this infographic to make believable predictions about future cause of death! The color scheme is nice, it’s definitely engaging subject matter, and it tells a lot.

There is soooo much information here, though, that it looks incredibly verbose, even though the words are all necessary. I wonder if having charts or graphs for every age group/race/gender would make this infographic more or less cluttered. The way it’s set up, I feel viewers are likely to locate their own demographic and then skip out on the rest of the information. Maybe breaking it up into a series of infographics (male and female, everyone ages 35-44, etc.) would be helpful? A graph could’ve easily been employed to show the relative likelihoods of each of the unlikely ways to die, too.

Because of the repetitive nature of the layout, I found the way the words were lined up with the skulls to be distracting. Causes of death that only took one line were lined up with the bottom of the skull, while those with two lines were centered. My eyes kept looking for the cause of death near the skulls’ eye levels. It seems nit-picky, but I think it would make a huge stylistic difference if all the words were lined up to the center of the skull. It would help the charts look balanced.

Since this is more a word chart than it is data viz, I’m not quite sure how to grade it. It’s designed well and it functions in a way that makes it easy for everyone to locate their own demographic, but there are no graphs or visualizations (other than the icons of each gender/ethnicity). Having the percentage or total numbers of people who die from each cause would simplify the data viz quite a bit. For that reason I’ll give it a C: it serves its purpose well, but makes comparison between demographics more difficult than graphs would.

The folks over at iMortuary.com put together another headstone infographic, this time about Valentine’s day. Viewers are always compelled by the morbid or weird, and this infographic has those elements in spades. Given that, I’m not surprised this went viral. That said, this doesn’t follow the necessary foundations of an infographic. In other words, there is no data being visualized in this design, it is instead a great deal of text with some pictures beside it. If all the pictures were to be taken out of the infographic, it would still display all the same information… therefor it’s not a graphical representation of information as much as a well designed topical article. iMortuary has some great ideas for infographics, I just wish they were presented more like infographics and that the design was unique (they used the exact same headstone design from their last infographic).

As mentioned, the concept is great, the data is very interesting, and the funny stories make it clear why this went viral, but the design is sub par at best. It’s conceptualized well, but since it’s been done before, it doesn’t have any wow factor.

Here’s what the folks at iMortuary have said about this infographic: “12 weird and fascinating tales intertwining love and death — just in time for Valentine’s Day. Strange things happen when love meets death.”

To improve this infographic, I think that a completely unique design should have been used. I think that a great deal of data could have been added to this infographic so that it didn’t rely only on text to drive the story. Data could include number of deaths on Valentine’s day year over year, number of near deaths, number of heart tattoos given on Valentine’s day, etc.

AllFacebook, the unofficial guide to Facebook, has put out a bizarre infographic that provides insight into how you will live on at Facebook, after you die. As more people continue to create online profiles at social networks like Facebook, it is only a matter of time before a small percentage of them pass away. This infographic points out that about 200,000 Facebook members die each year, which is more people than the entire population of many countries. It states on the infographic that Facebook used to just delete your profile if you died, but now there is an option to report a deceased person, so they can get a page to be a memorial. This means it will no longer appear in search results, or be a suggestion by Facebook.

Overall this infographic could use a bit more data, as there are only a handful of facts regarding the topic. Another piece of the infographic that I could go without, is the flowery purple background. Granted it is an infographic about death, but it does not have that depressing feel. I would have preferred a pure purple background, as it would make the graphics and text pop better on the infographic.
