This infographic was submitted to us by Infobia. It’s a fascinating look at how the media reports on crimes differently than the police do. It’s interesting that the media in some cities doesn’t report at all on certain crimes, and that sometimes they report on things that don’t seem to happy in the city! Atlanta police report 0% rapes according to the graphic, but the media reports 27.3% of the time.

There’s a lot of data viz in here–although I’d like to see the designer work with some more unique expressions of data viz than just the bar graphs and scale used in the top section. It’d also be great to see that final banner as a visualization–just 0.5% of us will ever be victims of violent crime? That’s worthy of some data viz to really show just how unlikely it is.

Overall this graphic has clean design, clear visualizations and sticks to the point. It reveals the large discrepancies between crime rates and reporting rates in some major cities, avoiding too much text and staying organized. The color palette keeps a serious feel without getting monotone or over-the-top, and the typography works well together, not distracting the viewer. The illustrations are pretty cute, too! I’d rate this infographic an A–just a bit more data viz experimentation could make it outstanding.

This infographic was submitted to us by eLocalLawyers.

This is really attractive. It uses the yellow police tape feel without being heavy-handed, employs cute iconography for a non-cute subject and is just darn interesting. Even if we don’t all admit it, nearly everyone is fascinated by death and murder. Getting an inside look at how these crimes are investigated is pretty cool.

There are great illustrations throughout–simple and clean, but that just adds to the aesthetic. The visuals on passage of time and trajectory of blood drips are excellent, and the info remains engaging. I’m especially into the info about forensic entomology… I had to exclaim out loud that moths feed on body hair. Yuck!

If I had to suggest anything to edit, I’d recommend trying to trim down the text in the intro paragraph and in “How to Do an Autopsy”. Because the columns of text are so narrow, it makes even the shortest amount of text look lengthy. “Stomach Contents” is two relatively short sentences, but looks like a large block of text due to formatting. I get stuck looking at the cute illustrations, and end up just skimming the descriptions.

Overall I’m a big fan of the aesthetic of this IG, and I’ve give it an A. Great work on a gross topic!

>

This infographic was submitted to us by the good people at MapsZipCode, who say of it, “The first decade of the 21st century will go down as one of the most turbulent decades in the history of the United States (from 9/11 to two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, to the explosion of the national debt…). This infographic compares the changes at the beginning and the end of the first decade.”

The data within is fascinating, and held my attention throughout. I love the color scheme; it’s inviting without being flashy. The two-sided horizontal bar graph at the bottom of the infographic is also pretty interesting, and there is really not much text that isn’t represented by an image. It’s also extremely thorough without being boring.

On the critical side, much of the data visualization gets repetitive, and isn’t as unique as I’d like to see. About half of the data is represented in arrows and bar graphs. I love the gas pump visualization, even, as an inventive way to house a very simplistic spread of data. So, a little more ingenuity in originality would be great to see here. The Budget Distribution pyramid was a little hard to interpret, especially at the microscopically small top tiers, since the pyramid representing the year 2000 didn’t have any of the labels attached. Percentages, while a little boring, might have made this statistic more effective. While I think budget distribution is crucial and engaging data, the impact of its redistribution over the last decade is lost in the very minorly different pyramids.

Overall, I’d give this infographic a B: it’s clean and professional, well-organized, and highly informative, if a little dry. A good example of not letting text drive your infographic. You can’t have “infographic” without “graphic.” (Or “info.”)

Telegraph.co.uk brings us yet another infographic filled with loads of data. This infographic, entitled Crime in England and Wales, shows an amazing decline in crime in Britain, with levels being their lowest since 1981. Some examples of crime being down include firearm incidents (down 3%), knife/sharp object incidents (down 7%), and homicides (down 6%). Despite this decline, 66% of people in the nation think that crime is actually increasing.

The infographic then goes into detail about the amount of crimes that police are solving year over year, with 2010 having a higher rate of unsolved crimes when compared to other years. Next, the infographic shows a variety of crimes and how they have decreased year over year. These include criminal damage, fraud, robbery, drug offenses, and more. Unfortunately, though, the only crime that has dramatically increased is sexual offenses. Finally, the infographic takes one step further and compares crime rates in the UK to crime rates in other countries. This is a great final aspect to the infographic, as it really helps to put things in perspective and is something more people should do as infographics continue to evolve.
