This infographic was submitted to us by Sell My Old Mobile Phone.co.uk

There’s a lot of surprising and saddening information in this infographic. Some of it is nicely visualized, all of it is relevant, and the design and layout are really nice. I also like the color palette–it’s dark, but not prohibitively so, and it avoids the tendency for dark backgrounds to be contrasted by bright or neon colors. It’s also easy to navigate this infographic. Everything is well balanced, so it doesn’t look too cluttered or too empty anywhere. The design elements are all pretty creative. I really like the number 515 composed of phones, and the cow is an entertaining note to end on.

Data viz is only employed a few times here, right at the top of the infographic. Though there are so many numerical facts and statistics contained here, only the world population, population with mobile phones, and weight of dumped mobile phones are successfully visualized. All the other facts are simply illustrated: the cow by the greenhouse gasses fact is cute and related, but it’s not doing anything to show the 35 million pounds of greenhouse gasses. Same thing with the number 515. I suppose if it was actually composed of 515 phone images, that would be data viz, but as of now it’s simply a clever design element.

Just adding some more charts, graphs, and other forms of visualization will really help boost this infographic to its greatest potential. As is, I’ll give it a B!

This infographic was submitted by Distracted Driver Accidents. The following is a portion of the description they provided:

“Driving distracted causes thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of accidents
each year. Using cell phones while driving is an enormous problem and if we do not raise awareness and do something to stop it, the number of people killed or injured as a result of driving distracted will only increase every year. Make people aware of the dangers of distracted driving by sharing this infographic with your friends and family.”

The design on this infographic is really clean and inviting. The color palette is nice and really stands out from the asphalt gray background. (Nice touch on the death dice, by the way.) The dashboard visualizations for age ranges and fatalities/injuries are well-executed and effective examples of data viz, as is the bar graph about the types of vehicles involved in incidents of cell phone distraction.

The “types of distractions” section is a little confusing, only because there is data viz throughout the infographic, and the bars coming out from each light are different lengths. This cause me to momentarily confuse the image with a bar graph, and I thought it was trying to illustrate that more external distractions cause crashes than internal, and both more than inattention (which, by the way, is spelling incorrectly on the IG). But really, it seems that they’re only different lengths because of the lengths of the words. Just something to consider.

This infographic does a very good job of balancing negative space with info, and not including too much text. It tells its story, gets it across in a comprehensible way, and doesn’t waste time. Overall I’d give it an A-. Great job!

This infographic provides an overview of the history of the cell phone, starting out with a graph that shows the rise in U.S. mobile phone subscribers from 1985 to 2009. It then goes into a time line that starts in 1973, when two major cell phone events occurred. This is when Japan’s NTT debuted the first commercial G1 cell phone network, and then Dr. Martin Cooper made the first call on a cell phone. It continues on to show how things have evolved for the cell phone, and where were at today in 2010 with amazing smart phone options like the iPhone 4, which is the first phone to bring cell phone video chat to the masses.

As mentioned by Milo.com, the creator of this infographic:

It’s hard to imagine getting through one day without using a cell phone, especially since the device now doubles as a computer, planner and address book for many of us. But less than 40 years ago, the idea of a cell phone was just that—an idea. [Above], we chronicle the technological innovations and improvements that have taken place in a few short decades to make the mobile phone the powerful machine that it is today.
