This infographic was submitted to us by Slavens & Associates Real Estate Inc. They provided this description:

If you live in the heart of Toronto, you’d know the real estate market is selling like hotcakes. Having the right numbers and figures will help you make the right purchasing or selling decision. Slavens & Associates Real Estate Inc. brings you a visual report about the hottest property figures in 2012. Don’t miss out on that dream real estate listing!

This is a good report for anyone owning or looking to own a home in Toronto. It’s quick to breeze through and offers insight as to what styles of home have become more and less affordable. I’m glad to see that it is focused on numbers and avoids heavy blocks of text. However, the data viz seems a little random.

I’m not sure how the days are being represented in the average number of days on the market. And for the Average Sale Price to List Price Ratio graph, the distance between 99% and 101% is larger than that between 101% and 105%! For the July 2012 Home Price Index Increase, the circles ideally would be sized according to their percent increase, but instead they are all the same size. The bottom stat looks like it is a start to a bar graph, but the 52% isn’t really shown.

So on the plusses, we have a clear theme, clear and concise information, and data used. However, the data viz isn’t serving its purpose, and the design itself isn’t particularly engaging. Overall I’d give it a C+ — definitely a step in the right direction, but not quite displaying the intended characteristics of an infographic.

This infographic was submitted to us by RateSupermarket.ca

The information here is really valuable (literally!) and well organized. It shows a very clear way to save a substantial amount of dough on your mortgage over time, and there’s tons of data to support just how worthwhile it is to take these steps. There are just a few spots where adding extra data viz or illustration could save some text.

While I wouldn’t say this IG is text-heavy, the font size and the fact that all the text is in caps make it feel a little overbearing in places. One quick way to cut that down in each section: “Total Interest Saved” and “Your Savings” give the same information, and the “Your Savings” section is much cuter (look at that lovable owl!), so I’d suggest cutting out “Total Interest Saved.”

The 18% of Canadians who’ve made a lump sum payment isn’t actually visualized–it’d be better to see it as a pie chart, or maybe as 1 out of 5 Canadians (the owls again?). Plus, the visualizations for 2 years saved on rapid payments and 1 year saved on lump sum payments are the same–maybe there should be 2 calendars for the rapid payments.

The thing to take away from this is that these are mostly very picky critiques! Overall, this IG is clear, concise and to the point. It is a clear sales pitch, which in general is best to avoid with infographics, but people looking to save money on mortgages probably don’t mind when they’re being shown how much money they stand to save.

I’d give this infographic a B: take out the repetition, boost the data viz a bit and maybe include some general information on Canadian home buyers (how many homeowners? average age? fastest-growing province?) to offset the salesy feel.

This infographic comes to us from Credit Card Review, who provided this description:

“The Canadian banking industry loses hundreds of millions dollars per year due to credit
card fraud. Credit card fraud has become a serious problem that is not always easy to
solve. The infographic below offers a snapshot of the costs of this modern crime.”

What we have here in data viz is pretty nice. Simple circle charts show the breakdown of types of fraud both on average and in total. The design is pretty interesting; I like the circular images placed among the layers and the blue color palette. It really makes the gold credit cards between average loss and total loss serve as a section break.

On the data side of things, this could really use some beefing up. We’re expecting from the title to see a lot of info–maybe percentage of funds recovered from fraud-related theft on average, or the number of Canadians who are victims of credit card fraud. The info that’s here is good, but it’s incomplete; it’s not telling a whole story.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B. There’s nothing really wrong with what’s here, but there just isn’t enough of it.

This infographic comes to us from the people behind Canada’s Social Election Experiment. Here is what they had to say about their infographic upon submitting it to us:

The infographic is the summary of key findings from The Social Election Experiment focused on evaluating a Facebook Likes to real world vote, for the Canadian 2011 federal election. We confirmed that the electoral process can be influenced by social media and most importantly, we can attribute a true value to a Facebook LIke (which is considered a marketer’s holy grail). It also appears to be a pioneering effort in terms of the first thumb-official digital straw poll.

Overall, this infographic is pretty good. I give it a B+. The design cohesive, definitely goes with the social media theme and has a very “Facebook-y” feel. All of the icons go together, and I like the map of Canada as the main graph (there is a typo, however, under the “28.5 million”). I would say that the pie charts need a little work. Though they look good in terms of the colors and clarity, but they could be a lot more interesting. An easy way to fix this could be to add a stroke or outline, or giving layers to the pie graph (each “slice” could be a different layer.) Also, it seems that the bar graph at the bottom is uneven or slanted at the bottom.

The text call-outs at the bottom are in a font that doesn’t really go with the rest of the infographic – I would use the same font that was used throughout to keep things cohesive. Also, the percentage call-outs are a bit redundant since they are visualized earlier in the IG.

Overall, this infographic just needs a few tweaks to go from good to great. Nice job!

This infographic comes to us from CreditCardsCanada.ca, which is a site that helps Canadians find the right credit card. The infographic covers the ins and outs of online shopping in Canada, which is timely considering the holidays are the busiest shopping time of the year, and in Canada, Boxing Day is one of the most popular times to shop online. The infographic states the following:

Consumers scaled back their spending during the global economic slowdown, but e-commerce continues to enjoy robust growth. E-tailers are gearing up for the 2010 holiday shopping season in hopes of a solid end to a tough year.

The infographic then goes into detail about online sales revenues in Canada, which saw a 90% increase from 2005 to 2009, but are still very small when compared to the U.S.

All told, the infographic is pretty good, but I do wish there were more data points. I’m an ecommerce nut, so I love any information I can get about online shopping, spending habits, etc. It would have been nice to add some more imagery as well.
