This infographic was submitted to us by Sensible Internet.

There’s a lot of useful data here to help convince a business owner why they might need a website if they don’t already have one. It’s clear from going through this infographic that the Internet is the place to be to reach more customers, and that there’s a right and wrong way to do it.

There are inconsistencies throughout with periods, symbols (percent or %), capitalization (“google” should be “Google,” “Internet” is sometimes written as “internet”), etc. I also feel that some of the stats aren’t necessary or may detract from the message. For example, I’m not sure the Internet vs. TV stat is serving the cause that well, as it shows the amount of people willing to give up the Internet as about equal to those willing to give up TV. If that number were more in favor of the Internet it would be a great point to make, but the actual statistic just isn’t that compelling.

This infographic could also use a storyline (it just sort of ends at what people are doing wrong, without offering a solution) and more attention to design. The font is really standard, the colors are mostly shades of gray and the illustration of the guy on his laptop is reused in mirror image. The data viz is also identical across the board. The design of an infographic is one half of the two very important components of an infographic: information and graphics. Without a solid hold on both, the piece won’t be up to its full potential.

In all, I’d give it a C: it feels more like a first draft of research and design. Proofing for both of these elements could make significant improvements!

This infographic was submitted to us by Energy Forecaster.

This design is about taking a lot of detailed survey information and breaking it down into detailed sections. It relies almost completely on data viz to tell its story, which we love to encourage, and each page of the infographic is clearly categorized.

It’s easy to follow the progression of the questions to find out why businesses haven’t switched suppliers or how much a raise in energy prices would impact their business. However, the data is all “middle” — that is to say, the introduction is above the infographic and the content is within it, but a conclusion is nowhere to be found. The final page of 4 discusses energy contracts and nothing else, and there is no Page 5 to tie things up. An infographic should tell a story, and this one approaches it, but only with a little inference.

Although I appreciate the extensive use of data visualization in the infographic, it does become a little monotonous. The bottom portion of page 4 is a good example of how repeating the same type and scale of data visualization can hurt the impact of the information. My eye just jumps over and between the circle charts instead of moving through them and absorbing each one. Because they all look identical, there’s no real point of focus.

In all I’d give this infographic a B — lots of data viz and a clear target, but could use some more visual interest and a beginning/middle/end.

This infographic was submitted to us by BestComputerScienceSchools.net.

The color and illustration here is fantastic. It makes for a truly entertaining adventure, navigating all the different facts and figures about Google’s enormous reach and spending habits while being entertained with cute visuals. The illustrations interact perfectly with the accompanying facts so it’s fun to see how the designer chose to portray everything.

I learned a lot about what Google has been doing with all that money, and the bright color palette and interesting illustrations pulled me through the graphic. What’s missing here, though, is visual representation of the numbers. We have illustrations that match the topic of each fact, but we don’t have visualization of the data itself.

For example, Google spent $30 million towards getting a robot on the moon. That’s impressive, but not so much when compared to the $350 million it’s spent on wind farms. If you think about it for a second and do the math, you’ll realize that’s over 10x more than its lunar spending… but it would be excellent if some data viz could show you that instead! Maybe an icon per $10 million, or a bar chart to show the amount of each expense compared to one another.

In all, I love the aesthetic and vision of this graphic, but until it visualizes the numbers, it isn’t really an infographic. Because of that I’d have to rate it a D as an infographic… but I really did enjoy reading it through and would give it a B+ for visual interest.

This infographic was submitted to us by Zenprise.

I like the style of the first set of data visualization here. The cleverly subtle overlay on top of a world map, also including watermark-esque icons of each platform, makes for a visually engaging introduction to the rest of the more plain (but effective) data viz to come.

The issue here is that instead of letting the data do the talking, all the talking does the talking. An infographic that’s based on a report doesn’t have to include the heavy text of the report. Long blocks of sentences and paragraphs can almost always be condensed into organized and bulleted sections that let the viewer understand what’s being said without having to really read. This infographic seems to combine the functions of an infographic and an infographic blog post. My eye is skipping over all the text to analyze the charts instead.

We also like to avoid all-white backgrounds in general, as they’re likely to just blend in with the web page where the IG might be embedded, making less of an impact.

In all I’d rank this a C as an infographic — I’m so glad that there is clear and effective data viz, but when that happens, there shouldn’t need to be a lot of text to help it out. Slimming down that content will help boost the efficacy of the piece overall.

This infographic was submitted to us by Mimecast, who provided this description:

The research surveys 500 IT decision-makers in the UK, US and South Africa. IT decision-makers have an overview of the content of company inboxes that a typical employee does not have. This empowers them with a broad understanding of what the shape of email is and enables them to evaluate email best practice. Check out the Infographic and key findings from the data in the Shape of Email Report, which include some interesting disparities.

This short and sweet design is fairly effective at getting its point across without dragging on. The key takeaways are that 21% of emails on work accounts aren’t even work related, and even fewer than that are mission-critical. We also take up a lot of our inbox with internal emails. I’m a little confused about where the final stat in the “inbox” imagery fits in. So 64% of people believe social poses a security risk.. what does that have to do with work emails? Social poses an email security risk? Perhaps some rephrasing or a few more words could clear this up. Also, the positioning of those bottom three stats is odd — why is archiving thrown in between two stats about social media?

This could get even better if the two biggest stats (and the inbox ones below) were actually visualized. If people could really see that the vast majority of their emails are internal, it would get the message across even better.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B: it’s concise and clear on the top stats, but the bottom 5 stats could use just a bit of work to clarify and visualize better.

This infographic was submitted to us by Mimecast, who provided this description:

There are many concerns over the things that could go wrong during your Exchange migration; Loss of data, downtime, the sheer volume of data to be migrated and unsupported applications all give the IT team problems to solve even before the migration can happen.

This infographic has really cute illustrations (I’m especially a fan of the “Downtime” and “Over 500GB of email data” animals). All the effects of the great email migration are represented visually in an entertaining way that makes the viewer want to continue reading. The allusion to animal migration is a simple but effective way of making what could be a complex issue seem quite approachable — maybe even fun! Also, the colors are interesting without being overwhelmingly bright.

Unfortunately, although the illustrations of the animals are adorable, they’re serving the purpose of iconography rather than data visualization. It’s possible to do both–maybe snakes as bar graphs, or ponds as pie charts–but an infographic needs data visualization in order to truly be an infographic. There are lots of great numbers on here, but since they’re only written out, they’re only serving half their purpose.

Because of this I’d give this infographic a B-. The designer recognizes that numerical data is an important element of an infographic, but it’s just not being used to its full potential yet!

I wonder about the drop-down “NO” and “YES” for each question in “Have You Got What it Takes?” Typically that would be used if it were a pathway or “choose your own adventure” type of thing… but none of the yesses or nos feed directly into anything else, so it just winds up looking a little needlessly busy in that section.

This is more a guide than it is an infographic, so grading it as one would be unfair. As a tool for those looking to start a business, and as a graphic design, I’d give it an A-. But since there are very few numbers and no data viz, it isn’t a traditional infographic, so I’d give it a C- on that front. More business stats would boost that factor.

In all an enjoyable graphic with refreshing design sense, but again not what we would typically define as an infographic.

This infographic was submitted to us by eminutes, who provided this description:

Far too often, entrepreneurs are unaware that LLCs and corporations are very different. Although virtually the same from a liability protection standpoint, they are extremely different from a tax standpoint. A lawyer and a CPA can help you evaluate the pros and cons of corporations and LLCs, but in the meantime, the following are some basic guidelines:

•In our firm, we use LLCs as the entity of last resort, because of the extreme junk fees – called the “Gross Receipts fee” that apply to LLCs (but not to corporations) in California.

•In California, the initial $800 franchise tax is waived for corporations, but not for LLCs.

•Licensed professionals cannot operate through LLCs in California.

•LLCs are best where the company will own real estate.

•S-Corporations are best except where the corporation will have shareholders who are foreigners or other companies.

This would be a useful tool for small business owners in California, offering insight to whether it makes sense for you to stick with LLC or become a corporation. A simple “yes/no” answer with a little clarification goes a long way to helping make that decision.

However, inherent in the topic is the problem that there are no numbers, and therefore there is no visualizable data. That’s basically the cornerstone of a good infographic, so I can’t really grade this tool based on infographic standards.

As a tool I’d give it a B because it’s quick and concise, but not overbearing. The design and consistency in grammar could probably use some work, though–why is “answer the following questions” all lowercase, when it seems to be serving the purpose of a subtitle? At least “answer” should probably be capitalized.

Business owners have endless decisions to make, including how to manage finances, security, time and more. Something as critical as corporate minutes might be overlooked–don’t make that mistake! Keep up-to-date on all your responsibilities and use tools like these to help you make the right decisions.

This infographic was submitted to us by Meoble, who, like the rest of you all, have been very patient with us over the last several weeks of holiday insanity!

(To begin, I’d like to thank everyone who reads and submits for entrusting your valuable time to us. We’re working to get up to speed. We publish and review infographics that we feel benefit the creators and the readers in terms of feedback, and while not everything makes it onto the site, a nudge may help!)

This particular infographic focuses on the recent uproar over Netflix, and its subsequent decline. It really benefits from the inclusion of stock price graphs–what better way to track a company’s progress or regression? It’s stunning how much share prices have plummeted in the last half of 2011. Will they recover? It remains to be seen.

The color palette here is appropriate, as it correlates to Netflix’s own red, white, black and gray scheme. However, the infographic gets a bit gray-heavy, to the point of being distracting. Gray text on varying shades of gray boxes is a lot of gray to look at–my eye jumps to the spots of black and white, which aren’t necessarily the most important pieces of text or illustration. It would help if more red or other techniques for contrast were incorporated in the lower portion of the IG.

There are also spots where the inclusion of text wasn’t necessary. Whenever possible, text should be minimized or removed from infographics. The data viz and illustration should tell the story.

For example, the box about losing 800,000 customers doesn’t need the accompanying sentence–except that the sentence says 805,000 and the illustration says 800,000. The less text there is, the more easily and quickly the viewer can process the information.

The portion about stocks plummeting 27% after customer loss also stands perfectly well on its own, without accompanying text. If the text is just repeating what the data viz already says, it can be excluded, to the benefit of the infographic.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B. When the text is cut down and the colors livened up, it’ll be a great source of fast info about the fall of Netflix.

This infographic was submitted to us by Smart Meetings.com.

There is plenty of targeted, relevant information in this infographic. There doesn’t seem to be anything frivolous or off-topic. The data is very well organized, tells a complete story and includes several good examples of data visualization. My favorite element here is the travel budget shown in a rainbow of airplane exhaust. It’s kind of reminiscent of an ice cream cone or cotton candy or something–in a good way. It’s probably the most creative example of data viz on this infographic.

There are a few places where data viz could have been employed–the first set of numbers could have been scale representations, like stacks of money, to illustrate the values. The yellow box could’ve been pared down, since the 6.9% value would have worked well for visualization as well. If text can be removed and the information is still understandable, it’s a good indication of a solid infographic. It seems to be a random choice which statistics get visualized and which are confined to the yellow tags. The yellow tags also serve as a platform for headings, which makes for a bit of visual oddity. Maybe a color differentiation would fix that.

The major problem with this infographic is that it’s enormous. At a width of 2,224 pixels, it’s more than double what we like to see–maximum 1,000 pixels. Since it’s a pretty long infographic as well, this makes it a scrolling nightmare. Scale it down about 55-60% and it will be much more user-friendly.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B-. It’s got a lot of good data viz, with room for a little more, but it needs to shrink quite a bit to be readable.
