This infographic was submitted by Robert Half International, who provided this description:

Find out what you’re worth with Robert Half’s salary guides for accounting, finance, technology and administration professionals. Founded in 1948, Robert Half International is the world’s leading specialised recruitment firm and the first to provide placement services for accounting, finance and information technology professionals.

Though this is a very brief infographic–and not that that’s a bad thing–it does a great job of keeping text light, utilizing data viz and staying visually entertaining. It even does this despite the white background and gray accents, maintaining a look of professionalism while being engaging.

It’s clear through both graphs and visual cues which numbers are the most significant. Take the amount CFOs expect salaries to rise–the 34% value is clearly the highest, but it’s also highlighted in blue, making the recognition of its significance instantaneous. The use of iconography mixed with data visualization also spices things up, as in the final graph.

The call to action is well-executed at the bottom, too, not acting as a sales piece but a “learn more here” invitation.

My nit-picky critiques are, well, nit-picky: in the first visualization, I assume that the red characters are representing the 48% that plan to see salaries rise, and the remaining white characters don’t expect salaries to rise. So why is the white character on the end jumping/rising? If anything I think he’d be a bit downtrodden that salaries won’t be rising. Also, in the headline “for those that expect to increase salaries,” I’d think that “for” should be capitalized–and “that” could be changed to “who”. But again, small details. (It’s also a little odd to see the logo at the top and bottom of the infographic, but not outlandish.)

Overall I’d give this infographic an A-! It does its job briefly, doesn’t linger around too long or beat around the bush, and it appears clean and accurate.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at ReachTEL. They included this description:

ReachTEL has conducted a poll of over a thousand Queenslanders’ asking them about the coal-seam gas industry. In addition to the CSG questions, we asked for State voting intentions. The polling was conducted nationally on Tuesday night (16th August) using our fully automated voice broadcast market research capabilities. This gives us the ability to have audited research results back in our customer’s hands in literally hours instead of days or even weeks.

The data is very clearly displayed here. There’s no ambiguity about the questions or responses, and no filler data. We see which party is the most popular overall and the varying opinions within each party on particular issues of coal-seam gas and other environmental concerns. It’s nice that the colors for each answer remain the same throughout, so there’s a unity and continuity to the data that allows for even simpler interpretation.

Design-wise, this infographic is quite plain. An infographic should be inviting and interesting to look at, but the designer here displayed the information in rather muted tones and simple structure. All of the data is displayed in the same size and type of pie chart throughout. Designers should take advantage of the graphic medium to go “outside of the box,” as it were. It is possible to make a unique and engaging design that is still clear to viewers.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It is telling a story, there isn’t too much text, and data viz is definitely employed throughout. However, it’s just not eye-catching. It’s extremely basic and, well, average, hence the “C.” Spice it up with a little creative illustrating and maybe a few more points of data–maybe even a sentence or two about the coal-seam gas industry for those who aren’t in the know–and it’ll be well on its way.

This infographic was submitted to us by Mozo.com.au, who provided this description:

“The current share market turmoil and global financial uncertainty have turned the
spotlight back onto cash investments. So Mozo.com.au has put together a ‘Choose Your
Own Savings Adventure’ infographic to help people find the best home for their savings
based on their particular needs and circumstances.

Finding the best place to stash your cash is becoming more difficult than ever, so we
created this infographic as a fun way to help savers through the maze.

The data in this infographic was sourced from Mozo’s independent database of the high
interest savings accounts and term deposits on offer from over 100 banks, credit unions
and building societies in Australia.”

This is a smart concept for helping people make good financial decisions. The suggestions are very specific, and a “choose your own adventure” is always fun, regardless of the topic. I also love the piratey tag line. It’s also nice that the yeses and nos are color-coordinated, so it’s extremely easy to follow their paths.

Though this is a very nice and handy graphic, it isn’t an infographic. The info isn’t visualized, and there isn’t really much opportunity for it to be. The interest rates could be turned into pie charts, I suppose, but generally it won’t work. One option would be to make graphs comparing what would happen to $5,000 after 5 years, or something like that, to show what the best overall values are. But as it is laid out currently, it’s mostly just text and dotted lines.

Because of that, although it is informative, this graphic would get a C- on the scale of infographics. Without data viz, it’s difficult to get scores any higher.

This infographic is courtesy of Grant Elevators.

We like to see IGs that are heavy on the graphic and light on the text, and this definitely passes muster. I like the color palette too: the background is reminiscent of hardhats, and the rest of the color scheme is simple. It fits. The infographic is also very neatly organized into two vital sections: “What’s Happening” and “Why It’s Happening.” The use of bar graphs and the size of circles relative to the numbers they represent is a nice clear way of getting data across.

I’ll admit that as an American I had to look up All Ords (the biggest index of shares in the Australian stock market), FIRB (Foreign Investment Review Board), and FHOB (First Home Owner Boost). I’ll also admit that as someone who has no clue about construction I didn’t quite understand the PCI, even though the acronym is graciously spelled out. However, I’m guessing that people who are looking for information contained in this infographic would understand all these terms with no problem, so I don’t think I can dock the IG much for my own ignorance of the industry!

What I did understand was that the Australian construction industry is in a bad way, and my understanding of that point is a good indication that this infographic is doing its job with data visualization. What I didn’t understand were terms–the data viz is universal. The layout is extremely clean here, and there’s a pretty good variety of types of graphs, so it doesn’t get too repetitive. I do wish they were more unique, though. The bottom line graph is the only one that takes advantage of the subject matter, including a house with the chimney smoke morphing into the graph. A little more innovation like that would make this IG pop, and a little more universal accessibility wouldn’t hurt, but overall I give it a B!

This infographic comes to us from BigPondSport.com and covers the history of Australia’s Melbourne Cup. According to the infographic:

The Melbourne Cup is said to be the brain child of Captain Frederick Standish, a former Chairman of the VRC, who conceived of a “good handicap” that would allow the Victoria Turf Club to compete with its rival the Victorian Jockey Club. His unique race required handicap conditions over two miles and created significant interest from the first running in 1861. Arguably the biggest event on Australia’s sporting calendar, the ‘race that stops the nation’ is now the greatest 3200m handicap in the world.

The infographic then delves into history and facts related to the Melbourne Cup. Upon submission, BigPondSport.com had this to say about the infographic:

One of the most prestigious horse racing events in Australia, the Melbourne Cup, will stop the nation as everyone takes a punt on horses they have no idea about. Working offices will have staff glued to the television screen for a race that lasts for maybe less than a minute, and betting fanatics might have to refinance their mortgages after sizable bids on their (most likely) losing horses. Who care! Its an Australian tradition! Prepare for the 150th Melbourne Cup!

While the infographic is filled with information, it is very wordy and hard to take in all at once. The heart section is especially overwhelming. That said, it would be improved by including more images and less text, as infographics should mainly focus on design to tell the story, not paragraph upon paragraph of information.

This is an interesting infographic that shows how Australians are currently using their Internet enabled mobile phones. Smart phones are saturating the market, which has aided in the rise of mobile commerce. This makes understanding how mobile phones are being used in other countries a top priority for many in the world of e-commerce.

This infographic begins by pointing out that nearly half of mobile phone users in Australia have Internet enabled phones and about 26% access the Internet from their mobile phone each day. It then goes into depth about the activities people engage in when using their mobile phones, and shows how this has changed year over year. An interesting fact from this infographic is that the iPhone is not the market share champion in Australia like it is in the United States.

Overall, this is a very simple infographic with a few pieces of good information. It would have been nice to have more data, though, as just a few facts are not usually enough to create an entire infographic.
