This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at AYTM. They gave us this description, too:

“The iPhone debuted in 2007 and Apple has sold well over 100 million devices to date. With Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicting that 18.8 million iPhone 3GS users will upgrade to the iPhone 4S within the next year (which will account for 18% of sales), AYTM put together an infographic from our research for some insight into the apparently never-ending iPhone phenomenon.”

This is a wonderful example of a really informative and thorough infographic. Yeah, there’s a decent amount of text here, but the balance is what’s important. The text serves important functions, like listing features or providing context for/summarizing visualized statistics. There are way more visuals than there is text, so to use some internet speak: “ur doin it rite.” (You’re doing it right.) The colors and design fall right in line with Apple aesthetics, but the unique illustrations don’t make it look branded or gaudy.

There are just a few technical problems throughout this infographic. The most common is inconsistency in capitalization (the features of the various models of iPhone under “The DNA of US iPhone Users,” for example, or apps/Apps). Attention should be paid to the accuracy of copy just as in the accuracy of data.

My favorite examples of data viz here are (can you guess?) “Time distribution of device use” and “Features and benefits the next iPhone must have.” These are really unique graphs. While it takes the uninitiated viewer a few moments to work out how to read them, it’s worth the investigation. Pie charts and bar graphs will always have a place in data viz, but it’s always more exciting to see people play around with new formats.

Overall I’d give this infographic an A-. It does a really great job of telling its story in an accurate, attractive and unique way. I tend to have a hawk-like eye for typos on the work of others (and appreciate others correcting me, even if I do take it personally… haha), so for me the capitalization issues are the only thing holding this back.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Sortable.com.

There’s a pleasing purple throughout this graphic, and the variations in size and typeface keep the information engaging throughout. There are lots of really interesting facts and stats here, and they’re pretty well organized. It’s fascinating to see the impact that this brand has overseas, in a country where the phones are produced but largely unaffordable. I like the relative ambiguity of the background image–it provides enough visual interest but isn’t distracting. In fact, sometimes very plain backgrounds on IGs are more distracting than patterned ones! That logo dispute at the bottom is pretty interesting too; does Apple really have a problem with all images that even sort of look like an apple?

While there is plenty of great information here, none of it is visualized. There’s lots of text and numbers but no charts or graphs. Viewers have to do more reading than looking, which isn’t ideal for an infographic. Since the size of text varies throughout, the designer could use that to his/her stylistic advantage while employing data viz at the same time. Right now, the size variation seems to be purely aesthetic. The largest statistic is the 27 suppliers who allegedly have serious pollution problems–but 27 is definitely not the highest number here. (This would be easier if there were more comparative data–maybe versus Microsoft or other tech giants?)

On a technical note: 70B$ should be $70B.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C+. It’s got really good data, but without visualization it’s just not truly an infographic. Some revision in this area would make this fantastic.

This infographic comes to us from the people at Manolution. Here is what they had to say about their infographic upon submitting it to us:

As Richard Nixon destroyed happiness with his war on drugs, the 1970’s saw the world’s first personal computers, inspiring five geeks to start a pair of companies which would go on to shape the future of computing as we know it. This infographic details every major event and product launch for these two companies, complete with the corresponding historical stock price for each point of interest.

There are several things about this infographic that just do not really work. Though it is pretty common for infographics to feature a time line as the primary data set, this time line is way too long. It takes too long to scroll down and read through the entire infographic. There are several pieces of information here that could probably be left out to make room for more data visualization. There are a couple of graphs for data visualization at the beginning and end of the piece, but they are very boring and could definitely be made more interesting. Right now, they look like something that was just put together in Excel.

Overall, the design of this infographic is very dated – the aesthetic is very 1990′s, though the information covered goes through the present time. An infographic covering modern products from both Microsoft and Apple should be just as current in its design – this design does not even include the current logos for either company.

Paring down the text, shortening the time line, adding more interesting graphs and overhauling the design in favor of a more modern one would be the best ways to improve this infographic.

This infographic comes to us from Go-Globe.com and covers facts about what can happen in 60 seconds for several websites that we all use every day. Here is a sample of what goes on online each minute:

12,000+ ads are posted to Craigslist.org

98,000+ new Tweets are posted.

6,600+ pictures are uploaded to Flickr.

There are over 695,000 status updates on Facebook.

Over 70 new domain names are registered.

This infographic has a lot of data. It is fairly easy to read and go through quickly, but this data could be visualized in a much better way. Right now, each statistic is accompanied by the respective logo of the website. I really like the way that all of the logos are incorporated and all of the facts are very interesting.

This data could be presented well graphically — the LinkedIn section is a good example of how most of this data could be visualized. Each icon could represent a certain number of profiles (or tweets or status updates) and then the total number could be displayed that way. The sites whose statistics involve amounts of time (like Pandora or Skype) could be visualized in a similar way or with a bar graph. In addition improving the aesthetic of the infographic and making it easier to read, visualizing the data would be a great way to compare activity on each of these websites as well.

This infographic is designed nicely, but could seriously benefit from work on the data visualization aspect. It has the potential to be really great!

Today’s infographic comes to us from SingleGrain.com, which is a company that does SEO, PPC, and Social Media Optimization (SMO). Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at Single Grain had the following to say:

This infographic highlights the income and expense of some of the top tech giants in mobile space.

All in all, the infographic is OK. The design isn’t bad, the color scheme is nice, but man is this thing wordy. Wordy infographics are often a deterrent for many. Infographics are a very common method of online marketing these days. Because of that, the space is super cluttered. This means that, to stand out from the crowd, your infographic has to be amazing and definitely not intimidating. This infographic, though, is a bit intimidating with all the text and it is not the kind of eye candy people are getting used to. To improve this infographic, I suggest that they add more data visualization. For instance, a time line of each company with important stock figures would be a great addition. A chart that compares them side by side vertically would help too. Yes, they show this horizontally, but it’s hard to see because of all the scrolling, so a concise bar chart would be an additional perk. Some data about the company owners, with pics of each owner would also be a great addition, as this is something few know and would like to see. Finally, the SingleGrain.com logo should be on this infographic. Since it’s not, what’s to stop someone else from claiming credit for this infographic? Infographics are a tool for link building and brand building, both of those can’t be accomplished without a logo in the design.

Today’s infographic comes to us from AppOfTheDay.com, which is a website that posts daily reviews of apps available for the iPhone. The infographic details the performance of Apple’s app store since its launch, and focuses on numbers as of December 7th 2010.

There are some interesting stats in this infographic, including the fact that free apps make up for 33% of all apps in the store while 50% of the apps cost anywhere from $0.99 to $2.99. The infographic continues on to show the distribution of apps by platform, category, and price.

Overall, the infographic is OK. The design is nice, but the data is lacking. This isn’t unlike other infographics that have already been released, so this infographic is missing a hook that would make it worth sharing. All in all, there aren’t a lot of points of data in this IG, and some of the most interesting points live in very small (probably 10px) white font that is already hard to read. The infographic does do a good job of sticking to its roots though, by displaying colorful graphs in a layout that is easy to take in all at once. Another nice feature in this infographic, though subtle, is the choice to use rounded corners. As infographics become more and more the norm, the competition is heating up, and something as small as rounded corners will help an infographic stand out from the crowd.

This is an incredibly long infographic brought to you by ViralAdNetwork.net, which provides information complied for NMA’s (NewMediaAge) viral ad chart. The infographic covers the most viral brands of 2010 (so far) and tries to pinpoint what makes an ad have that special something extra to make it go viral online. The infographic mainly focuses on viral videos, with the new Old Spice marketing campaign as its central focal point. It begins by listing a variety of top 10 lists, and the same videos make up each top 10 list for the most part. It shows amount of views and shows that Facebook is the best sharing platform when compared to Twitter.

After going through the top 10 lists of viral videos, the infographic goes on to speak about the most viral brands, by using video shares and views as its basis for determination. It displays these brands by shares and then views, with Apple, Blendtec, Nike, Old Spice, Twilight, and Google making it into each top 10 list.

One of the best ways that this infographic displays data is by using a tag cloud to show viral success by brand. Beyond that, this infographic is mainly lists, but still does a good job of getting its point across. The infographic does show the same lists in different ways, so it could be made shorter by taking away a list or two. Otherwise, it has some very relevant information that will help any marketer pinpoint how to make a video go viral.
