This infographic was submitted to us by BuellWetsuits.com, who should certainly know a thing or two about shark attacks!

There’s a lot of great data here that snorklers, divers, swimmers, surfers, sailors, parasailors etc. could find quite useful. It’s definitely good to know that it’s quite unlikely you’ll be killed by a shark attack–but unsettling that the rate of fatality is on the rise! The shark illustration is also pretty darn cute.

I’d like to see a little more visual organization, though. In some spots (Scientists Have Defined Two Types of Shark Attacks; We Cannot Eliminate the Possibility…), the subtitles/transitional text aren’t emphasized, making the text look even, shall I say, “textier”? Text can effectively kill an infographic when it just looks chunky/long, and it really doesn’t take much at all to look text-heavy. For instance, Sneak Attack: only two short sentences, but four and a half lines of text!

Also, there are so many opportunities for data viz, but only one of them (Global Shark Attack Activity) is used! The map is sort of an attempt at data viz, but there’s nothing to visually show the proportion between confirmed and fatal attacks–the division of blue and red is equal for each continent.

If there were more data viz and a bit more attention paid to organization, this infographic would be significantly approved. As is, I’d give it a C.

Stay safe in those waters!

This infographic was sent to us by Cell Pig.com and this is what they had to say about it:

An interactive infographic exploring why pigs are the most amazing creatures in nature. From 7 minute miles to 30 minute orgasms, these animals can do a lot that humans never knew.

There are a lot of interesting facts about pigs in the infographic and some pretty funny data-viz (Pig smoking a cigarette? Priceless). I particularly liked the lengthy comparison of male humans and pigs. I was actually pretty surprised that pigs can run an average 7 minute mile–you don’t usually associate pigs with running, or anything else that would be considered “healthy”. It was sad for me to see that pigs are the fourth most intelligent animal seeing how they are treated by food corporations. I also would have never guessed that they were smarter than dogs or cats. All very interesting data.

This infographic also had some nice visualization of data with the little Piglets representing how many babies a sow can give birth to within a year. I also liked the way the “Pig Anatomy” represented what parts of a pig are used for what types of food. The infographic stayed true to the theme throughout and had a nice flow. I didn’t feel bombarded by too much information, I was able to read through the infographic with ease.

I would give this infographic an A- overall. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a solid A is because I wish there was more data visualization. Although there were a couple facts that were nicely visualized, I was left wanting more. A couple of the facts that just included graphics could be improved by exchanging the graphic for a better representation using some sort of graph/chart. Perhaps this could be done with some of the facts about pigs versus male humans. But overall, this is a fun and informative infographic!

This infographic was submitted to us by Peta2.

Most of what I see here makes an excellent example of an infographic, so I’d give this a B. This is a well-organized infographic with an extremely targeted message. It uses data viz quite effectively and contains no unnecessary text. It’s concise, to-the-point, and makes a convincing case to “Cut Out Dissection.” The color palette is appropriate to the topic and easy on the eyes. The brand isn’t overly present even though there is a definite opinion on the subject matter being presented. The story is told and ends on the right note: what can be done about the problem?

The only place in which I could suggest more data viz/comparison would be a look at the other leading causes of animal death (like hunting, slaughterhouses, etc.) to see what portion of the larger problem dissection covers. If there were also a statistic available about what percentage of animals are killed by gas, that could cut out the only real portion of text in the infographic.

The biggest problem I see with “Cut Out Dissection” is that there are no sources listed. Sources are extremely important for giving your infographic credibility–otherwise viewers have no way of checking the facts. Especially regarding topics like these, where opinions weigh heavily on either side of the issue, it’s vital to show where the information came from. It’s the main reason I had to dock the infographic from an A.
