This infographic was submitted to us by Travel Indochina: Share the Experience.

This is a great example of innovative design and unique data visualization. It took me awhile to notice, but each beer bottle for each country is filled proportionally according to how much beer is consumed per capita. Granted, it’d be easier to notice this without the beer labels–but the label plays an important role in identifying popular local beers. Perhaps if the beer cap bore the logo of the local beers, the level of beer would be more visible, and the liter measurement could simply be written in the beer.

There’s not a wide variety of data here, but because there are so many countries covered I think consistency is a good tactic. I’m curious about the rationale for the ordering of the countries (and especially the recap at the bottom). Instead of progressing from most to least or least to most, it jumps around, making it difficult to get the best visual comparison. I think seeing the progression from .002 liters all the way up to 45 would be more compelling.

I’d also like to see maybe just a bit more visual interest within each section, and a slight reduction in text. I like the information presented, but 6+ lines of text can look very heavy in an infographic; a sentence or two appears to be a long paragraph because of spacing. The IG is also incredibly long at nearly 11,000 pixels — cutting down on text would cut down the space needed to convey the info, as would scaling down the country names, size of beer bottles etc.

That said, these are picky notes. Overall I return back to the clean, unique design and data viz to give this infographic an A-. It tells its story quite clearly; all it could really use is a bit less text and some further consideration to organization.

This infographic comes to us from the folks at Talbott Recovery who said:

The following infographic highlights The Road to Recovery through statistics that help tell the story of addiction that many Americans know all too well. Our goal is to raise awareness and to highlight the benefits of drug and alcohol recovery.

The design of this is nice – the seasons blend in well together and I like the overall flow. That said, I have to give this infographic a D overall, as almost none of the graphics I see on this have anything to do with the topic. There is very little data visualization and there is a lot of empty space that readers have to scroll through unnecessarily.

Most of the information is presented with text and the graphics that are there have little or nothing to do with the data. Sometimes it makes sense, for example I like where beer bottles and marijuana leaves are used to represent statistics about alcohol and marijuana. However, there are other parts where there are graphics that don’t really make any sense, like birds, ducks, squirrels, and butterflies to represent alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and heroine. A good infographic should have images that tell something about the statistics that they are being used to represent, and although these images go with the visual theme of nature going on in this infographic, they simply don’t add to the data visualization.

This infographic is just too large and doesn’t present the information in a way that grabs my attention or makes me interested in the information. If the graphics were changed and text was less relied on to make sense of statistics then this could get a higher grade than a D, but as is it needs a lot of work. A great design can get you far, but data viz is really what makes an infographic.

This “infographic” was submitted to us by the folks at Derby Supply Chain Solutions. Here is what they had to say about their infographic:

Created for the 4th of July, this infographic includes a description of logistical challenges in the Revolutionary War, and the role logistics played in America defeating Britain. Info includes challenges soldiers faced, supplies needed, and other interesting snippets. Derby Supply Chain Solutions is a value-added 3PL provider, supplying global businesses with a multitude of services including assembly, packaging, warehousing, and distribution.

I really like the design of this one. It is well illustrated, the color palette is simple and goes with the theme, and the typography is elegant. That said, as an infographic I have to give this one a D+. There is so much text and absolutely no data visualization, even though it includes some statistics! Despite how great the design is, it is very intimidating due to all of the text – reading the entire “infographic” could prove to be very daunting for the user. This is unfortunate, because there is so much interesting information contained here – not every American knows this much about the Revolutionary War. My main suggestion would be to go through and find ways to visualize all of the data – any percentage can be represented with a pie chart. Quantitative data like that in the “By the Numbers” section can always be visualized with icons similar to the way the “pints of spruce beer” section is visualized, but with a key to show that one pint icon is the equivalent of a certain number.

The designer did very well overall and clearly knows how to tell a story, but visualizing the statistics and paring down the text considerably will really make this into an infographic and bring it to the next level.

The folks over at AllCulinarySchools.com, a website that links prospective culinary students to some of the best accredited culinary schools in the nation, created their first infographic recently. This infographic is an OK first try, but there are many sites in the education space producing infographics today, so as they continue to build infographics, AllCulinarySchools.com will have to raise the bar. Upon submitting the infographic, AllCulinarySchools said the following:

I’m sure you probably enjoy these delicious sugary treats known as Christmas Cookies that come around this time every year, but have the baking habits of certain family members reached a level of obsession to make you question their sanity? Worry no more friends; here we have the history of Christmas Cookies info-graphic explaining why they are such a big deal and where all these scrumptious cookies came from. With traditions that date back to the 16th century and cookies coming from countries all across the world it’s pretty easy to see why they are important. Read through this info-graphic to find out what part of your history has a little bit of Christmas Cookie in it!

All in all, there are many pros and cons to this infographic. Let’s start with some of the pros: the title image is great! Using sugar cookies to spell out the title really draws the eye into the infographic. The pictures have some funny word bubbles that act as Easter eggs filled with wit, which is also nice. I also really like the cookie crumbs throughout the infographic, but they don’t blend in with the background completely, so if you look really close you can see that they are cut out stock images and see where they were cut. This is very subtle, and the intention was good.

Now for a few cons: an infographic is meant to provide viewers with a visual representation of information, not another thing to read. This is a problem I come across time and time again, especially with companies that produce their first infographic. The design is OK, but it’s mainly stock photos surrounding a great deal of text. Infographics should have as little text as possible because they are meant to be taken in quickly… if the same thing can be displayed in an article by adding just a few images, then it shouldn’t be made into an infographic.

The general idea is great, but there should be a time line with actual dates popping out. The best time line infographic out there (and many would agree) is the history of beer, which shows a great time-line with a ton of images to offset all of the content. Dates are bolded, important numbers and data points are a different font/color/font-weight, etc. This allows someone to browse the infographic quickly and gather all relevant information, it also encourages sharing of the infographic, as it provides a fun and easy to digest way of supplying a large amount of data. This could have been accomplished by making the font more legible on the infographic, as that much text is hard to read with the current font. Next, important dates and points could have been bolded. It would also be nice to include data points like the number of Christmas cookies consumed each year, sales numbers for Christmas cookies, etc. These points can be shown in graphs to off set all the text.

The designer did a great job of opening and closing the infographic, and tied in branding quite well. Branding is highly important so that an infographic can be shared without another company taking credit for it. Whoever wrote the copy gets points too, as the text is very funny if you’re willing to take the time to read through it… but the key point here is “read” which is usually counterproductive to an infographic.

Ultimately, the infographic is a good first try, but next time AllCulinarySchools.com should focus more on displaying information with images and making the imagery and design more prominent and important. Text should be an after thought for any infographic that will go viral.

PS – do you wonder why I wrote so much this time around? Well, our boss knows some people at AllCulinarySchools.com, so she asked me to write up a thorough review, but if you ask me to do the same for any of your submissions, I will

There are many infographics out there about drinking, partying, and spirits, and honestly most of them are funny, but this infographic takes a more serious approach when uncovering the top 10 alcoholic countries in the world. Submitted by Methods of Healing, this infographic shows the difference between being tipsy and actual binging, and how this has impacted some countries more than others.

Upon submission, Methods of Healing stated:

Some people think they can out drink everyone else on a fun Friday night, but can you really? Try traveling to some of these heavy drinking countries who think consuming alcohol is a walk in the park. If you’re still alive after this, you probably have the strongest liver in the world…not necessarily the most healthy though.

Overall, the infographic does an OK job of proving its point and a slightly less OK job of tying it into the overall theme of MethodsOfHealing.com. The beveling on the bar graph is a good example of less than perfect design, because the rest of the imagery on the infographic is flat, so the bar graph doesn’t really fit with the bevel effect. The design looks like a first stab at an infographic, which means that Methods Of Healing will improve their infographics over time (hopefully).

This is a fun, yet overwhelming infographic from That’s Nerdalicious, which covers the world of beer at its finest. The infographic lists a variety of beer types like Belgian, Pale Ale, Lambic, Lagers, and more while showing what beers you can buy that stem from these types. Basically, this is one gigantic web diagram that probably took forever to complete. Stemming from Lagers are different types of Lagers around the world and stemming from those are well known brands… it’s so much information that it’s hard to take in all at once.

Nerdalicious had the following to say about this infographic:

Find the world of beer styles confusing? Well this epic infographic probably won’t clear things up much. It may even be more daunting than before actually.

The infographic is also available as a poster, which it is well suited for. This is definitely something worth printing out and taking to a beer festival (too bad Oktoberfest is already done in Seattle, otherwise I would have definitely used this as a guide to all the beer options). Because of the hard work that must have been put into this, there’s not much to critique. I think my only suggestion would be to have a higher resolution version of this infographic available, as that would be easier to read. That said, since they are probably trying to sell more posters of this than anything, it’s understandable why they wouldn’t make a high-res version readily available.

At a time when California is about to vote on legalizing more than just medical Marijuana, this infographic from Cannagraphic.com does a great job of showing what pot legalization is up against due to common misconceptions. The infographic begins by showing how the U.S. government compares to the UK when determining what drugs are dangerous and what are not. Clearly, in the UK, the perception is that marijuana is the least dangerous drug out there, yet in the U.S., our government ranks it as being just as dangerous as LSD, Ecstasy, and Heroin. Our government also views cannabis to be more dangerous than Cocaine and Speed. Now, while I don’t smoke pot, I do have a beer after work every day, which is completely legal. According to this infographic, alcohol is ranked as more dangerous than cannabis by two expert panels of health, science, and crime professionals. So why is it that my drinking a beer every day is legal, while pot is not?

It could be that the US ranks cannabis as dangerous because of the violence that goes along with selling drugs, or the damage done to houses when they become grow houses, but many experts believe that this violence and damage would go away if marijuana was legalized. The next section of the infographic shows how this could be the case, by covering drug arrests, with marijuana related drug arrests making up for 50% of all arrests. That said, the infographic then goes on to show just how much it costs to keep people in prison for drug arrests, which is over $6 billion each year. Now, if 50% of those were taken away because of cannabis being legalized, our country would save over $3 billion each year in tax dollars.

Speaking of tax dollars, the infographic also shows how cannabis can be taxed just like tobacco, which would earn the United States over $728 billion in tax revenues each year!

The infographic concludes with a chart about annual causes of death from drugs in the U.S. and shows that cannabis causes 0 deaths each year, while smoking causes 435,000 deaths! Now the fact remains that there are “lies, damned lies, and statistics” and this entire infographic uses a lot of statistics that have various dependencies associated to them. With that in mind, the infographic is still highly enlightening and proves its point rather well. As mentioned before, I don’t smoke pot, but those I know that do don’t seem more hindered by it than someone is by smoking or drinking… in fact, they seem far less changed by it. This is why I believe that cannabis will have to be legalized soon, especially to help our country get out of dept. The fact remains that people will continue to smoke even regardless, but by legalizing marijuana, houses wouldn’t be turned into grow houses, cannabis related violence would stop, and the nation would reap the financial benefits.

With football season starting up, fans are getting ready to get back into the swing of things and get their tailgate on. While some fans have an entire setup complete with grill, beer pong, TV, radio, and more, others might just be getting into this time honored tradition. Luckily, for those that are die hard fans, a website about medical insurance has decided to create a completely off-topic infographic about tailgating. While I’m not sure if anyone needs such a detailed guide to tailgating, it is a pretty fun infographic with a lot of great facts and figures that you can use for a conversation starter at your next pre-game party.

The infographic begins with the history of tailgating and goes onto display some stats about tailgaters and beer. Next, it jumps into a detailed section about games to play during tailgating, then offers some quick warnings, before talking about the best tailgating locations in the country.

This is a very easy to digest infographic about beer in Colorado, the “Beer Me” state. It has just 11 simple facts about Colorado and beer, which are not necessarily put in any particular order. Some of the more interesting facts include:

You get drunk faster in Denver because of the high altitude

Golden, Colorado is home of the single largest brewery in the world, the Coors Brewery

The Great American Beer Festival has been hosted by Colorado for over 30 years and is in the Guinness Book of Records as the best place to find more beers on tap than anywhere else.

All in all, this infographic is a fun and quick read, but the information is not necessarily something that would be hard to consume in a simple list format. All in all, there is a great deal of content on this infographic and not a lot of imagery. That said, I’m not sure this needed to be an infographic in the first place, but it’s fun regardless.
