I love the concept of learning to understand what the heck your teenager is saying! The illustrations are cute and the definitions are quite helpful (some, like YOLO and swag, are internationally applicable).

The topic, however, doesn’t lend itself that well to an infographic in the traditional sense. Because it’s relying on text definitions, there’s more reading required than viewing. Limiting to one definition with an accompanying illustration would cut down significantly on text.

It could be fun to include some fake statistics to go along with the information (“95% of teens use this word daily,” for example), so as to further dilute the concentration of text. The more that a viewer has to read, the less likely they’ll stay engaged. Even though each section has perhaps only 30 words, the size and layout of the text make it look as long as a paragraph — rethinking the proportions of the text, then, could be another contributing factor to making this infographic a little more approachable.

In all, I’d have to rate this a C as an infographic — while there are lots of icons and illustrations, there’s a lot of text weighing it all down, and few real “facts” (though the origin story of “dench” is fascinating). As a guide for helping parents decode their children, though — A!

This has several elements commonly seen in infographics: timelines, a “by the numbers” section, profiles of key players in the subject, and assorted fun facts. There are lots of great numbers throughout the IG (£6 prize?! Old school!) so you learn a lot about the game in a short amount of time.

Because there are so many numbers here, I’d love to see some data visualization incorporated! £6? How about 6 £1 notes? 12 finals won by Scottish players? 12 Scottish flags! That takes some of the reading out of the infographic, and makes it even quicker and more intuitive for the viewer. This infographic does feature a fair amount of text (the timeline being the most crowded example), so any opportunities to cut down on text should be integrated into a great infographic.

Still, the overall aesthetic remains playful, colorful, and lively, so it’s fun to move from section to section. The design also manages to incorporate illustration elements with photos, and it isn’t too jarring — sometimes this combination can be awkward.

In all I would give this infographic a B-. It contains a lot of good data, but could rely less on text to convey its info — telling stories with images is one of the key functions of a great infographic.

There are a couple of good examples of data visualization on this infographic, and I like that it stays short and sweet. Viewers get a lot of key info about Transfer Day without having to swim through a lot of extra text. The background texture, of course, makes sense for the topic, and the fonts stay consistent so that they aren’t distracting.

I’d like to see the use of data viz stay consistent, however. When I started in on the graphic, I thought that the dollar amounts in the Top-5 Biggest Premier League Signings would be represented as bar graphs relative to the signing amounts of the other players — but it turned out that £8.5 million was longer than £10 million. It would have been a good opportunity to weight the figures against one another.

The same is true for the key Twitter terms surrounding the Transfer Window. The number 165,570 is about as big as 407,215, and I think the font size of the keyword itself (QPR, with 165,570 tweets) is actually larger than the keyword with more tweets (David Beckham, with 407,215 tweets).

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It makes use of data viz, it isn’t too long, and it’s pretty clean in design. It would just be great to see data viz used to its full potential! And don’t be afraid to get creative with it too: there are more than just bar graphs out there.

Although this provides a “point/counterpoint” argument regarding the safety and legality of DMAA, it is all “info” and no “graphic.” In essence, it’s text pasted onto a background, with no visual context or reference. It’s also devoid of hard numbers to help back up either argument. So, although there are no especially heavy instances of text in the infographic, the text appears heavy-handed anyway — because it’s all there is to look at.

Additionally, some typographical errors detract from the messaging of the infographic. For example, the first argument uses inconsistent title casing on both the “No” and “Yes” arguments. In the “No” argument, “harmful” is for some reason uncapitalized, while “Safe” is capitalized in the “Yes” box. The first instance of the word “is,” however, is missing from the “Yes” argument. This type of error is repeated in the second “Yes” argument.

Proofreading your infographic is a critical step to upholding your image online. In ideal circumstances, the infographic will be shared and critiqued across the web — bearing your company name and/or logo. Having a less-than-polished product linked to your name just isn’t great for business, whether that product is your website, a flyer, an email, an infographic, or anything else.

In all I’d have to give this graphic a D-. It doesn’t really end the debate with a decision — “The Answer” is that the “Yes” side argues “Yes” and the “No” side argues “No” — and there is neither illustration nor data visualization. There also isn’t any data to be visualized, and the text throughout contains errors. One would need to restart this infographic from the beginning to get it into shape.

According to the new Infographic from Baines & Ernst – The Cost Of Celebrations – us Brits spend a whopping 2.4 billion on Valentine’s day! But that’s not the only celebration where we splash the cash…

This graphic is packed with stats and features some nice illustration. It’s an interesting choice of holidays to include (no winter holidays or graduations?) but it is good to have a specified focus!

It seems a little random to me whether some facts were included in the main body of the infographic or in the “Did You Know?” section at the botom. I think better differentiation would make this a bit more intuitive for the reader.

I also want to see data visualization here. The stats are listed and sometimes accompanied by iconography, but they are never visualized with charts, graphs, pictograms, etc. Data visualization is key to a great infographic — so much so, in fact, that without data viz, it isn’t really considered an infographic at all.

I’d make the design a little more focused, too. It’s a bit “busy” with objects jutting in from all sides, overlapping each other – it’s tough to know where to look.

In all I’d give this graphic a C-. It’s got the data down, but it needs organization, visualization and some de-cluttering!

In celebration of this year’s Valentine’s Day, My Voucher Codes has delved deep into the romantic mind-set of the UK, creating an infographic to demonstrate just how loved up and spend-happy us Brits really are. In a poll of 2,446 people, we uncovered statistics to show which cities are more inclined to splash out on loved ones, the most popular types of gift – as well as how couples and singletons plan to spend the day. Are we a country of sentimental souls, or do we simply give in to commercial hype? We’ll leave it up to you to decide.

This infographic has some good examples of data viz (a heart pie chart!) and is packed full of statistics. It’s a very clean and well-organized infographic, so it’s simple to browse straight through it without stumbling on anything confusing. I learned a lot about Valentine’s Day in the UK!

I feel that the top portion of the infographic (from the title through the “Biggest Romance Spenders” section) could be more visually engaging, though. Since the background is busy throughout, it’d be easy to go overboard, but I think something a little less subtle than the heart tag with the word “by” would help draw the reader in. There’s ample use of iconography later in the IG, so maybe if some of that were brought up toward the beginning of the graphic, the viewer would be more inclined to keep looking.

The weight of the Most Romantic and Most Un-Romantic cities is also pretty heavy, since it’s given so much real estate on the design. I think if it were scaled back a touch, that would streamline the flow a bit.

Although there is some data visualization, it’s not utilized to its full potential for the most part. There are only 4 visualized data points/sets even though there’s tons of data, so I’d love to see it brought out a bit more!

In all I’d give this IG a B-. It’s got the idea down — it could just use some more charts, graphs, etc.

The design here is pretty busy, but the illustrations are great and the style is clean overall. It just looks a bit crowded between the illustrations, the icons, the data viz and the text! Still, the info is really useful for skiers with the travel bug, and seems like it could really help them pick their favorite destinations — especially with the circle graphs showing the ratio of available courses for each skill level. Then it just comes down to where they can get some cheap flights to and from their ski adventures!

I also love the visualizations for distance from the airport and elevation. Creative data viz goes a long way in making an impression in the infographics world. However, it does make the final section pretty off-putting in comparison. A large texty chart doesn’t look like something you want to read after coming across engaging charts and graphs. With a little more time and space, more data viz could be employed for the remaining sections. It also seems you don’t need the Mountain Elevations, Resort Elevation, or Cost of Stay Indicator in that bottom chart, since they are already conveyed in the first section — so that would eliminate a lot of the bulk!

In all I’m a fan of this IG, so I’d love to see the bottom chart slimmed down so that it can finish with the same “bang” with which it starts!

This is a really interesting compilation of the prohibited and restricted items for shipping in various countries. The iconography is great and the map background fits in really well. Although the map is quite busy, the simplicity of the overlaid “stamps” makes order out of chaos. There’s only one section of visualizable data but it works well — it’s interesting to see that pasta is the #5 most prohibited item!

This IG does a great job of keeping the design interesting, organized and aligned with the theme. I’d love to see a little more data incorporated, although the long list of countries (15 and mainland Europe, not the 10 listed at the top!) takes up a lot of space already.

The final section is a little odd with regards to the alignment of the Xs and check marks. On some, they overlap, but on others they don’t touch. A little consistency here would make it less visually jarring; standardizing the length of the text in this section would be an ideal way to help with this.

In all I’d give this a B as an infographic, because I’d like to see some more visualizable data thrown in and a bit of a cleaner execution on the final section. Definitely an interesting topic to tackle though — now I’ll know where not to ship spaghetti!

This is a good example of a “short and sweet” infographic that tells its story quickly and clearly.

I love the lead-in with the arrows and globe, followed by a clear assortment of data viz to effectively tell the story without many words. This information lets people know that their EB-5 applications are more likely than ever to be denied, and that 2012 is on a fast track to become the busiest year for EB-5s in sheer volume of applicants.

While the design itself is relatively plain, I think it’s appropriate for the topic. I do wonder why the data viz isn’t featured more prominently, though. The dominant images are the globe and the hand with the Visa. I’d like to see the graphs in a larger format to place emphasis on the information instead of the icons.

A little more data overall wouldn’t hurt, either. What % of applicants are male or female? What’s the average age of applicants? Are there peak months for applications? The goal isn’t a long scrolling piece but a bigger picture — a more comprehensive story.

Infographics are intended to tell a story, but this one is more an explanation of the company and a few choice stats inserted. A little more info could help round this out into something great.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B. Great simple design and low on text, but could be filled out a little, and more consideration given to the proportions of the respective elements.

There is some interesting information in this graphic, coupled with entertaining copy — although at times it doesn’t make much sense. I’m guessing mercury, antifreeze, and paint thinner aren’t in regular Tamiflu, so how could they be “the active ingredients” at all?

I’m also not sure how the aesthetic fits in. Bulletin boards, paper clips, sticky notes… seems to harken to school or an office rather than prescriptions. Maybe an Rx pad, pharmacy counter or doctor’s office would be more appropriate.

What would really spice this graphic up the most is to take the numbers listed throughout and turn them into visualizations. Counterfeit medicines kill over 700,000 people worldwide each year? Create an icon to represent 10,000 people and put 70 of them. (Putting just 7 icons each representing 100,000 people might not really drive home just how many that is. A larger number of icons will work better.) That’s the same as the population of El Paso? Maybe Put a map of Texas and a ring around El Paso to show where it is and what physical portion of Texas it is. Create a bar graph to show that while the $700,000 LAX bust was significant, the $11.5 million Viagra ring bust was over 16x greater!

Data visualization is a critical element to any infographic. Illustrations also usually look more fluid than do several unrelated stock photos, so we encourage their use where applicable.

As an infographic I have to give this a D since there is no data viz. However, the information is interesting, so it has potential! Maybe add more numbers to increase the amount of data viz. How many people worldwide take each of these drugs? Any estimate on what % of each drug is counterfeit? What about the % of all drugs? More related numbers!
