This infographic was submitted to us by Fine Tuxedos, who also provided this description:

Have you ever gone to put on your favorite shirt, only to notice an unpleasant stain or tear that you hadn’t previously noticed? Now imagine if that stain or tear was put there by someone who wore the shirt before you. This is the risk taken every time you rent men’s formal wear. Buy a tuxedo for yourself and make an investment into your wardrobe and your confidence, while spending no more than you would renting. Check out the infographic above to see some of the risks you are taking when you rent your tuxedo!

This is a cute list of the potential hazards of renting a tux. After all, if you think about it, it IS kind of like getting a 100th-generation hand-me-down…

Although the premise is funny, there is no real information for the majority of the graphic. At the bottom we get some hard numbers, but I’d really love to see them visualized. How about a bar chart to show the comparative cost of each item, renting vs. buying? Or pictograms, with one tux/vest/shoe representing every $10 of cost? Infographics are a chance to display info without making the viewer read more than necessary, so I’d love to see that implemented here.

Also, a quick note on sourcing: it looks like the sources are shown for the prices of the tuxedos from the company’s store, but there’s no source for the cost of renting. That makes it hard for the viewer to verify that these price quotes are accurate. Including all of your sources is key to maintaining credibility.

Because of these issues, I can’t particularly grade it as an infographic, so I’ll give it a B for humor and unfortunately a D for data, since it isn’t all verifiable.

This infographic was submitted to us by Creditplus, who provided this description:

According to the timeless Leonard Cohen’s song, there is a war between the man and the woman. In this war there is a common battle that continues to rage, one that will finally decide who are the better drivers, men or women. This infographic produced by Creditplus should finally put an end to the fighting.

Unlike emotions, stats are cold and pragmatic – we’ve looked at the three most obvious factors that set apart good drivers from bad ones: the driving test, parking abilities and the number of serious crashes they are involved in. As often happens with these studies, the results are bound to be argued by the losing side. Questions such as the number of drivers per gender and the miles driven per year are likely to be asked, so we have provided these stats as well. There could only be one winner in this battle and although they are unlikely to win the war, it will be one step closer for one of our genders.

This offers a really clear depiction of who’s who in the driving world in the UK. The illustrations are cute, the design is simple and easy to interpret. The humorous copy really helps move the storyline along, too.

But what I’d love to see is more data visualization here! While the designer shows via body language/facial expression and written numbers who wins each round, there is no visual representation of the numbers themselves to bring that message across.

So 49.6% of males pass their tests, but only 43.3% of females do? Make the male proportionally taller, or the box containing “49.6%” larger/longer. The visual representation of numbers is what makes infographics so easy to read. As is, looking only at the visuals, I’m coming away with who won, but not by how much.

The only spot with actual data viz here is the total number of drivers. More of that type of viz and this IG could be great!

I’d rate this a C as an infographic, because of the lack of visualized data, but I’ll give it an A as a tool, because it’s so darn cute and funny!

This Halloween-themed infographic about social media comes to us from the people at Shoutlet.

I really like the spooky theme and overall design of this infographic. It is a great creative way to look at social media at this time of year and tie it in with what people think is scary about using social media.

The grade that I give this as an infographic is a C- because it is very text heavy and readers have to get most of the information from reading. Because of all the text there is not a whole lot of data visualization present in this. It looks really nice and there are some cool graphics that go with the theme but they do not help to present the data in a visual way. For example, the section with the crows on a wire and all the speech bubbles looks really good, but every piece of information is in the text.

It would add a lot if there were graphics to go with the data that is in text. One area that could be improved easily is the section about what the worst spooky character at social media would be. The addition of an illustration of each type of spooky creature would add some visualization to go with the percentages. The same goes for the section about what horror movie social media is most like; pictures of the movie villains or characters would add some visualization.

I do really like the humor and the theme of this infographic. It takes some serious data and some not-so-serious data and mixes it together in a creative and interesting way. With some additional graphics and less text the data visualization would be improved a lot and I could give this a higher grade.

This infographic was sent to us by Cell Pig.com and this is what they had to say about it:

An interactive infographic exploring why pigs are the most amazing creatures in nature. From 7 minute miles to 30 minute orgasms, these animals can do a lot that humans never knew.

There are a lot of interesting facts about pigs in the infographic and some pretty funny data-viz (Pig smoking a cigarette? Priceless). I particularly liked the lengthy comparison of male humans and pigs. I was actually pretty surprised that pigs can run an average 7 minute mile–you don’t usually associate pigs with running, or anything else that would be considered “healthy”. It was sad for me to see that pigs are the fourth most intelligent animal seeing how they are treated by food corporations. I also would have never guessed that they were smarter than dogs or cats. All very interesting data.

This infographic also had some nice visualization of data with the little Piglets representing how many babies a sow can give birth to within a year. I also liked the way the “Pig Anatomy” represented what parts of a pig are used for what types of food. The infographic stayed true to the theme throughout and had a nice flow. I didn’t feel bombarded by too much information, I was able to read through the infographic with ease.

I would give this infographic an A- overall. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a solid A is because I wish there was more data visualization. Although there were a couple facts that were nicely visualized, I was left wanting more. A couple of the facts that just included graphics could be improved by exchanging the graphic for a better representation using some sort of graph/chart. Perhaps this could be done with some of the facts about pigs versus male humans. But overall, this is a fun and informative infographic!

Overall I give this a B- because there are a few places where it is lacking in data visualization, but there are also a lot of really good things about it. As I already mentioned, the cartoony characters are a really nice touch that grabbed my attention, and I could easily tell from how they were dressed and accessorized what style of entrepreneurs they are. I can definitely see each of these entrepreneur styles in real life. I also like the little map of the United States that highlights the most startup-friendly states; this is a good way to create data visualization without needing to read any text.

One spot where I think this infographic could be improved is the bottom section with statistics and percentages. I would like to see some graphics added to this section that more visually represent the data. For example a picture of a degree with an “x” over it could be used for the statistic that 65 percent of startup entrepreneurs don’t have a degree. Another example is the statistic about age could have a picture of a young man and an old man to visually represent the difference in average age of entrepreneurs.

In general I really like this infographic and found it very entertaining and informative. It is a little text heavy in areas and could add a few graphics to create more data visualization in those areas. The cartoon entrepreneurs really made this infographic work for me though and I would definitely give it a higher grade if a few minor changes and additions were made.

This infographic (emphasis on graphic!) was submitted to us by Lloyds Pharmacy, and is kind of hysterical for being so serious.

This is quite well designed, and keeps a great sense of humor about some unpleasant things, like alcohol-related death and sexually transmitted diseases. The graphic representing “The Clap” hiding behind a bush and giggling… well, that’s wonderful. I laughed out loud! “I’m the most common,” it exclaims nearby. Again, hilarious. All the arrows are also pretty great, and the genital warts graph? Inventive. Definitely inventive. And gross.

The colors are bright, which corresponds to the IGs target audience, but it doesn’t go overboard. It isn’t so neon that you can’t look at it. The somber ending is a nice way to finish the infographic–while all the preceding information has been a light-hearted look at some of the negative things you might get into in your first week at university, there is a place for seriousness here.

I suppose the only thing I want more of in this infographic is just a couple of extra statistics–how many university students get the glandular fever (otherwise known as mono) each year? How far does the average UK student move from home for university? It seems to be steeped in statistics early on (which is good) but reverts to more info and fewer statistics near the end of the infographic. Because that’s all I really have to say here, I’ll give this studious infographic an A-!

Infographics are a fast, colorful, and tech-friendly way to get information. All of these attributes simply scream “college student,” so we gathered a list of IGs appealing to that demographic. As the class of 2011 muscles their way into the workforce and the class of 2012 soldiers on into senior year, we want to showcase infographics as a quick way to get the facts you need and enjoy looking at them. (They’re like the CliffsNotes of the data world.) While most of these IGs are directly relevant to college, we think a majority of college students are pretty into bacon, so we’ve included a succulent infographic about it, too. Grab a frying pan and read on.

(Click any image to view the entire infographic.)

Buying vs. Renting Textbooks

Textbook rental is a popular way to save on the exorbitant cost of books. Students can save over $2,500 in a four-year education by renting their textbooks. That’s a lot of bacon money, kids. Of course, there is a list of “better” ways you could spend your money, if you want to be practical like that. We also see how rental saves taxpayer money, which parents and grads can be happy about. (We’d like to point out that taxpayer savings are represented by pigs. While intended to give the impression of a piggy bank, it reminds us of bacon.) This infographic is easy to follow, so you can scroll through it at the bookstore.

The 14 Best and Worst Dorms in the Country

Although this infographic doesn’t give any of the dirty details on why these dorms are awesome or awful, it’s still pretty useful. Maybe we don’t want to know why Garner Hall is the worst dorm in the country. It might involve bodily fluids, pest infestation, or gray dining hall food. You should save the link or embed code to this IG when making your housing requests. That way, when John from Math 203 shows up every morning smelling like the burnt hair in his dorm’s carpet, you can link him and he can put in a request to move ASAP.

Reading Students Like An Open Facebook

Did you know that 70% of colleges say a student’s Facebook profile is a medium to high priority in admissions? You ought to change your profile pic to that cute high school grad picture with Grandma. This IG uses a nice bright color palette to convey some terrifying (though useful) information for prospective college and grad school students. The designer used simple bar and circle graphs with varied orientations and icons, keeping the data visualization interesting. Bookmark this IG to review again before you mail in your application.

Reading Professors Like An Open Facebook

It’s nice to see this IG, directly related to the one above, use similar tactics but new design for its data. While the same circle graphs are present, the color scheme is different, and the bar graph has been reimagined. This also has more illustration, like the cute desk setup. 91% of professors use social media as part of their jobs… so look them up! Even with privacy settings, you’ll still at least find a profile pic, and sometimes those are worth their pixels in gold. Or laughs. Or bacon. (Wait, maybe not in bacon.)

College Students: Is Twitter Hurting Your Grades?

Admit it. You’ve tweeted during class. You’ve tweeted in the library. You’ve tweeted while waiting to talk to your prof. You tweet all the time, but is it affecting your education? This dynamic Twitter-blue and gray infographic wants to figure that out, and it analyzes some pretty interesting data to do so. As long as you’re not tweeting about the cute barista at the coffee shop this morning, Twitter can play a positive role in a learning environment. We already know social media plays an enormous role in, well, social relationships, but educational usage is pretty cool.

An Infographic About the Class of 2011

Our recent grads have grown up with the internet. They are tech-savvy. They don’t bat an eye at actors drinking brand-name sodas and shopping at major retailers in movies and TV. And yes, the first thing they think of when they hear U2 is Irish rockstar Bono. They may also fear tap water, opting for the finest in bottled H20. This is our new generation. Congratulations, class of 2011! To celebrate your entrance into the “real world,” maybe you should fry up some of…

America’s Favorite Bacon Dishes

We designed this appropriately red and pink infographic. It uses social media ratings to determine the most popular ways to eat bacon in some major US cities. These range from pretty normal fare (double bacon cheeseburgers are #1 in San Diego) to the absurd (chorizo stuffed dates wrapped in bacon are somehow the Chicago favorite… Atlanta has similar taste). We don’t know where all these people who eat bacon with dates are hiding, but the IG shows its the most popular pairing. If you’re a no-frills bacon eater, just fry it up and chow down–we won’t judge.

Wrapping Things Up (Other Than Bacon-Wrapped Dates)

For busy college students, the faster the info is available, the better. Infographics are a great source of information for this huge portion of internet users, and there are a wealth of topics that will peak their interest. Food is always a plus, but data on financial planning, careers, cars, entertainment, politics, and more will resonate strongly, too. Keep it simple, use pictures, minimize text. These simple rules apply to all infographics, by the way: you should always focus on data visualization, telling as little about your topic through text as possible. Infographics without the graphics are just info.

This infographic was submitted to us by IKEA. As it includes the dishwashers IKEA has for sale at the bottom, I’m assuming it is supposed to be an advertisement of sorts.

I really enjoyed looking through this infographic because it contains a lot of interesting and comical facts about dishwashers. I laughed out loud at the visual of foods you can cook inside of a dishwasher- lasagna in a bag? Yum. I also liked the data-visualization of the cost to run a dishwasher versus flushing the toilet. Can I also point out how darling the wet kitten is? Aww.

Although this infographic has some great (and hilarious) data-visualization, some of the content would be lost if the text was eliminated. There are a ton of facts and statistics regarding dishwashers, however, graphics aren’t always included. For example, the fact about how many times dishwashers are mentioned on Twitter each month is a great statistic, but without data-viz it gets lost in the infographic. With that said, when data is visualized, it is executed quite nicely.

The theme of information in this infographic is consistent, which I appreciate, but the layout could be adjusted to make more sense. Because there is so much information, the title gets lost because it is not located at the top of the page. Also, due to the amount of information and text, it is hard to decided what to read first- the data doesn’t have a great flow to it. But the colors used are nice, the gold and red nicely contrast the blue and I’m glad the background is something other than white or black.

As far as a letter grade, I would give it a B+. It is super informative, funny and well put together. With a few minor changes, such as a more prominent title and a more fluid layout, this infographic could be an A+.
