This is a cute list of the potential hazards of renting a tux. After all, if you think about it, it IS kind of like getting a 100th-generation hand-me-down…

Although the premise is funny, there is no real information for the majority of the graphic. At the bottom we get some hard numbers, but I’d really love to see them visualized. How about a bar chart to show the comparative cost of each item, renting vs. buying? Or pictograms, with one tux/vest/shoe representing every $10 of cost? Infographics are a chance to display info without making the viewer read more than necessary, so I’d love to see that implemented here.

Also, a quick note on sourcing: it looks like the sources are shown for the prices of the tuxedos from the company’s store, but there’s no source for the cost of renting. That makes it hard for the viewer to verify that these price quotes are accurate. Including all of your sources is key to maintaining credibility.

Because of these issues, I can’t particularly grade it as an infographic, so I’ll give it a B for humor and unfortunately a D for data, since it isn’t all verifiable.

This isn’t an infographic in the traditional sense, because there is no data visualization–in fact, there’s almost no visualizable data, except for a few revenue and cost figures and the breast implant surgery factoid. It’s also a little strange that the copy chooses to use the first person in this way: “Personally, I don’t think this is a good thing. At all.” When you say “we” in an infographic, and there’s an obvious logo or company to associate it with, it’s not strange. But “I”–well, who’s “I”? The infographic itself?

This is a cool resource for Mad Men fans though, with details about major characters and some of the ways the show has influenced real-life trends. I’d give it a B for interest but a D as an infographic, since there’s no data at all.

While it starts off with two good examples of stylized data viz, but after that the IG is all text. It’s difficult to judge as an infographic this way, since there aren’t that many numbers to show.

Within the text there are some grammar and capitalization inconsistencies (i.e. 1: build self confidence 2: to feel powerful–where was “to” in the first point?) that make the lack of data viz stand out even more. Plus, I was surprised that since the infographic is so short, we didn’t get more than three of the reasons women buy lingerie and more than four colors of lingerie. We all know there are more than four colors of lingerie–and pink, the background color, isn’t even included!

This is a great topic and I’d love to see it expanded with more data. After all, who doesn’t want to find out more about lingerie, lingerie preferences, personality by lingerie type and more? We’re naturally fascinated by this stuff!

Again, it’s hard to grade as an infographic–I’d have to give it a C for sheer lack of data and data viz.

“This infographic looks at just how much of an impact the pure play shopping retailers Asos has had on the internet, and demonstrates how far they have come in a short space of time. Using both revenue and traffic based data, this insightful infographic really breaks down the complexities behind the daily success of Asos.”

There are a couple things I really like about this infographic, including the data-visualization of countries in which Asos consumers reside. I thought it was creative how the designer used flags to mark the distribution of consumers. I also liked the timeline, which shows the history of the online retail store. The infographic does a good job of remaining relevant and telling a story about the company from start to finish. I also appreciated the introduction paragraph at the top- most IG don’t included them, but I find them really helpful, personally.

Although this infographic has some good qualities, there are also a few areas that could use some improvements. One potential quick fix is the background color. It is usually a good idea to stay away from white or black as a background color because they tend to blend into the background color of the website they get posted onto. Secondly, although this infographic contains a lot of relevant information, there is hardly any true data-visualization. They definitely included a lot of pictures, but not pictures that are representative of the data they are placed next to. One statistic that could be easily visualized is the one about how many Facebook fans and how many daily visits they receive.

Overall, I would give this infographic a C. It has some great aspects, but it also needs a few tweaks. With a different background color and some more data-viz, it could be great.

This infographic about Halloween alter egos comes to us from the folks at Overstock.com.

I like how this is broken up into costumes for male and female and into different age groups for each. The overall presentation is nice, I like the graveyard background and the cartoony drawings of people wearing different traditional halloween costumes.

The problem with this infographic is that there isn’t much actual data and statistics, and the ones that are there are given purely in text, for this reason I give it a C-. This could easily be improved if the different costumes were described more visually and had some extra statistics and information. For example, a graph or chart of some kind comparing the popularity of different costumes could be added, or the individual costumes could be broken down into their individual components in some kind of creative way.

There are some interesting facts that I like on this infographic, such as one in five people believes in witchcraft or more than 40 percent of Americans dress up for Halloween. These facts are hidden in the text however and if they were separated out visually it would add a lot of interest to the infographic as a whole. Some additions such as a pie chart showing how many Americans dress up or a picture of five people with one who clearly looks scared of the witch costume would really help the data visualization in this.

Overall this infographic looks nice and shows a few of the traditional and popular Halloween costumes, but it definitely needs some work when it comes to data visualization. It definitely has the potential to be a lot more interesting with more facts and visual representations of the data that is there. A few additions and changes would make this a lot more useful to viewers.

The designer does a good job with data viz here. There are no unnecessary blocks of text on this infographic. The color palette is nice, suits the topic, and makes everything easy to read.

The graphs about the percentage of bloggers who use Facebook and Twitter are kind of confusing. I don’t really understand how the blocks of color are truly representing the percentages shown. For example, in the United Kingdom, the graph seems to be saying that 91% of bloggers use Twitter, and that 47% of those use both Facebook and Twitter. But I don’t think that’s what the data is supposed to show.

(Also, the data is supposed to be separated by continent, except the United Kingdom is a part of Europe. Granted, it’s not part of the main landmass of Europe, but it is a European country. Also, are there really no fashion blogs in the entire continent of Africa? And only 7 in South America?)

The dimensions are also strange on this infographic. Generally, we don’t like to see IGs any wider than 1,000 pixels. When they exceed this width, users have to scroll horizontally. This IG is 1240 pixels wide, and only just barely longer at 1260. Some definite reformatting would be necessary to help this infographic fit the measurements.

I would also like to see a little more on this topic to help tell the full story. Maybe we could get some sample blog titles or trends in each country? Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It’s using data viz, has nice bold colors, and is extremely focused, but it needs to broaden its focus a little, fix the dimensions and work on the geography.

This graphic is kind of like a scavenger hunt, or a patchwork quilt of singer celebrities. Look for one pointy cone bra… there it is! Dress made of muppet eyes… found it! It’s pretty fun to see if you can recall each outfit from just a clue and a style tag.

“Madonna and Lady Gaga: Two shameless pop stars willing to try anything, no matter
how abominable or shocking, to secure a seat at the top of the charts (and tabloids).”

Unfortunately, this isn’t really an infographic; it’s a map of fashion. The design is pretty basic, and the resolution isn’t very high. Any zooming in or out makes it almost unreadable. I wish we could have a little more info about the background of each style, too. The styles would need to be supplemented with statistics–the rankings of Paparazzi and Material Girl on the Billboard charts, or how much the music videos cost, or the number of people that tuned into VMA performances.

Overall, I give this infographic a D-, because the proportions are fine and the intent is good, but it’s all graphic and no data viz.

This infographic about the 4C’s used to evaluate diamonds comes to us from the folks at Brilliance.

What I like about this are all the pictures representing the different carats, cuts, and parts of diamonds. The color scheme also works well with the topic and is cohesive throughout the infographic.

I give this a C, the reason being that it is about half text and half graphics. The explanations of the 4C’s are pretty lengthy and in some areas more data visualization is necessary. Data visualization is the most important part of an infographic, you should be able to take away the text and still get information out of the graphics. One suggestion I have is that the arrows from the 4C’s point to a more distinct place on the big diamond in the middle. As it is the arrow from “Color”, for example, just points to a seemingly random area on the diamond with no color in it. This could be improved if the area that the arrow pointed to had some different shades of color in it. This infographic could also benefit from a little more data, perhaps pertaining to price or rarity of certain types of diamonds. Making this a bit more data-driven and working on the data visualization could easily raise the grade from a C to a B.

The best data visualization in this in my opinion occurs with “Carat” and “Cut”. I like the representation of the different sizes of diamonds for “Carat” and the refraction for “Cut”. The overall flow of this infographic is good, it is not too cluttered and does a nice job of presenting a basic rundown of the different qualities of diamonds. For someone who doesn’t know anything about how diamonds are evaluated this is a good quick look at the topic, I know I learned something!
