This infographic was submitted to us by HondaPartsOnline.net

This offers a simple representation of how to visualize survey results. There’s not much text, so it’s quick to get through, and the results are clearly displayed.

What this infographic is missing is unique visual appeal. Between a white background, familiar fonts, and basic data viz, there’s not a lot that is particularly eye-catching about it. Except for the car pictures, everything is very flat. It would benefit from some dimension and some individuality. Go out of the box with the visualizations, and try something new!

Also, be sure to include info that works for your message — but you may want to downplay what doesn’t. For example, the stat that 23% of Honda owners feel more attractive in their cars… for me, is largely overshadowed by the inclusion of the comparatively huge “Has No Effect” bar. By just omitting that bar, you’re not misrepresenting anything, because you aren’t changing any of the numbers. What you are doing, though, is making the difference between the positive stat and the negative stat look more significant by eliminating the neutral stat. Overwhelmingly, Honda owners don’t think their car impacts their attractiveness, but that’s not the story the infographic really wants to tell!

Same goes for the words used to describe the Honda. I’d likely just include the #1 word, “Reliable,” because it’s such an overwhelming victory. As a standalone stat, “65% of surveyed Honda owners would describe their car as ‘reliable’” sounds more appealing than when you notice that apparently less than 5% think their car is smartly designed. Ouch!

In all, I’d give this infographic a C. It paints a picture of Honda owners, but it’s not very selective in what information it includes, and it doesn’t really draw the reader in visually.

This infographic was submitted to us by SinglePoint, who also provided this brief description:

Internet WiFi for traveling is a must, say most U.S. mass transit riders. This infographic outlines WiFi use on buses and how it impacts ridership.

This infographic makes good use of data visualization and clean, spacious design to offer a clear understanding of the topic without clutter or verbosity. By showing how use of public transportation has increased along with demand for WiFi, they draw a reasonable conclusion.

Another nice touch is that the infographic doesn’t go overboard on typography. It can be tempting to use different fonts for headlines, important points, or any other number of uses, but this IG’s restraint in that arena contributes to its easy-to-digest design.

The first data set, representing the survey of 1,000+ bus riders, is a little strange in the way the categories are separated. Someone who wished to email or surf the web would likely want WiFi as well, yet WiFi is shown as a distinct category. Still, it’s evident that device use on public transit is prominent.

I like the color distinction between the two main sections. However, I feel that for the topic of the IG, the even distribution between them is a little odd; it seems the first section is the main topic of the infographic, and the second is just more general info about public transit. Judging by the title and intro, the infographic doesn’t seem to be so much concerned with how many people ride the bus and where than what they’re doing on the buses, why they need the WiFi, etc. Maybe a few callouts of systems using WiFi successfully, or surveys of how many people have used WiFi in public places recently, etc. would be more helpful than a deep dive into transit itself.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s heavy on data viz, light on text, but could maybe use a second look at which is the emphasis: public transit itself, or device/mobile use on public transit.

This infographic was submitted to us by Sinotech.

The dynamic color scheme and clear organization are the standout features of this infographic. There are a few good examples of data viz early on, and the iconography and typography stay simple so as not to confuse or overwhelm the viewer. The design doesn’t try to take on too much information, but we get a good sense of the electric vehicle market and an intro to how these vehicles (and their motors) work.

I do wish the data viz extended throughout the IG, though. The 2011, 2015 and 2020 boxes have no data viz, but plenty of numbers. Under the BLDC motors section, there is the figure “85-90% efficiency,” but the arrow doesn’t portray the percentages. And the very first element of data viz — “43% of U.S. consumers say they’re interested in buying an electric vehicle” — is a little confusing, because I think the 43% is supposed to be represented by the shading on the 5th character, but because there is more than one character there, the visual seems to be saying something like “4.5 out of 5 U.S. consumers” instead. A different visual might convey the message better.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It’s easy to follow and contains some data viz, but should maximize its potential in that area.

This infographic was submitted to us by Big Steel Box, who provided this description:

Moving homes can be a big pain in the you-know-what. That’s why you need to make lists, stay organized and keep a calm head. The folks at Big Steel Box have prepared some helpful advice and a handy checklist to keep your moving day as relaxing as possible. Find out what you need to prepare for your next big move!

This graphic is full of great tips for making moving less stressful. Some are relatively common (confirming your moving date is DEFINITELY a must!) and some are nice and innovative. I’ve used canvas grocery bags, trash bags, pillowcases etc. to make moving in a car easier, but it’s something you might not think about until your trying to wedge the last box up against the curved ceiling of your car’s backseat. I’ve also neglected to label a few boxes out of the bunch before, which sure makes putting the boxes in their correct rooms impossible once you arrive!

While there are tons of great tips here, there’s no data, and no data viz. Checking out some moving surveys would be a great addition to this. What percent of people have accidentally left something behind in a move? What’s the first thing most people unpack? What percent of people hire movers as opposed to doing it themselves? A little bit of data would spice this up nicely.

Overall I’d give this a B+ as a moving tool but a D as an infographic, since there isn’t any data.

This infographic was submitted to us by Viking Direct.

This is a really interesting compilation of the prohibited and restricted items for shipping in various countries. The iconography is great and the map background fits in really well. Although the map is quite busy, the simplicity of the overlaid “stamps” makes order out of chaos. There’s only one section of visualizable data but it works well — it’s interesting to see that pasta is the #5 most prohibited item!

This IG does a great job of keeping the design interesting, organized and aligned with the theme. I’d love to see a little more data incorporated, although the long list of countries (15 and mainland Europe, not the 10 listed at the top!) takes up a lot of space already.

The final section is a little odd with regards to the alignment of the Xs and check marks. On some, they overlap, but on others they don’t touch. A little consistency here would make it less visually jarring; standardizing the length of the text in this section would be an ideal way to help with this.

In all I’d give this a B as an infographic, because I’d like to see some more visualizable data thrown in and a bit of a cleaner execution on the final section. Definitely an interesting topic to tackle though — now I’ll know where not to ship spaghetti!

This infographic was submitted to us by SavvyBoater.com

This is a nice example of how something that sounds like a singular topic can be expanded into a greater story. Rather than simply listing 6 reasons to cover your boat, throwing in some illustrations, and leaving it at that, this infographic also details where boaters store their boats, what types of boat covers are available and their ratings, and how to ensure you shop for the right size. It’s a guide rather than an introduction, allowing viewers to get more than 1 type of information from the graphic.

The colors make sense for the topic, of course, and the iconography and data viz are effective. I do wish there was a bit more color contrast, especially in the case of the circle chart. You need the lines going from each section to interpret what they mean, because the color variation (especially in the first few) isn’t significant enough to do it all that easily on your own. This also makes the few instances of red on the infographic stand out and attract my eye, even if they aren’t the most important things for the viewer to focus on.

I’d also like to see a little more creativity with the data viz — maybe the circle chart could look like a life ring or fuel gauge.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s doing a great job of conveying information and includes some data viz, but a little more creativity and color contract could kick it up a bit.

This map was submitted to us by LondonTown, and this description comes from their site:

What makes the Olympics in London so different from any Olympics before is its use of the whole city throughout the Games. No spectators in central London will ever be more than 30 minutes away from an Olympic venue, with some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks acting as a backdrop for the greatest show on earth. Most events will take place at the ground-breaking 2.5sq km Olympic Park in Stratford, a mere seven minutes away from the city centre by Olympic Javelin train. Other events will be scattered around in all directions at key venues a short journey from the center of town. 9.6 million tickets have been issued for the Olympics but the major ticket will be London itself, with the capital set to come alive throughout the summer.

This detailed map is really intriguing and offers a great overview of how each venue across the city will be used in the Games. Having the Tube map in addition will be really instrumental for lots of travelers hoping to navigate between events.

The thing with this graphic is that it is solely a map. There are opportunities to introduce infographic elements like data viz (number of seats per venue, tonnes of sand at Horse Guards Parade, etc.) but mainly due to space constraints and the geographic focus, these elements weren’t enacted.

As a map I give this an A–it’s fantastic, easy to understand and really useful. But I can’t really grade it as an infographic since there is no data visualization.

This infographic was submitted to us by MapQuest, and provides a great list of things to do around the United States this summer. Even those who can’t get too far from home can check out nearby national parks, ball games, etc. Plus, ouch–the cheapest gas in America in late June was nearly $2.50? Oh, how times have changed!

There are a few standard design comments I want to make here–one is that we typically don’t like to see IGs with white backgrounds, as it’ll just blend in with a large percentage of webpages that host it (like us!). White backgrounds also just aren’t that exciting to look at–especially when combined with gray illustrations. And though there is a lot of fantastic info here, none of it is effectively visualized. There’s plenty of relevant iconography and illustration, but no representation of the numbers. Fifty-eight national parks = 58 trees? Two thousand year old tree = tree dissection with 200 rings (where each ring equals 10 years)? There are a lot of creative ways to visualize all the great numbers on this infographic and up the interest. Data viz and a color makeover could make this infographic excellent.

In all, I’d give this infographic a C. Good content, but a facelift wouldn’t hurt.

This infographic does a great job of using branded colors, keeping design clean and packing in a lot of information. There are a few good examples of data viz here, but for how many numbers there are, I’d really like to see some more.

The first number, representing number of miles driven on Memorial Day weekend, is designed in a cute odometer theme. It can’t really be counted as data viz, but this sort of creative visual makes a good substitution. However, as you continue to scroll, you see plenty of numbers that offer no attempt at visualization. It would be great to make scaled representations of each size truck, to see how much 14 additional feet of length and 950 cubic feet of interior space really adds to a moving truck.

In all, it’s easy to get through and makes good use of iconography, but a little more data visualization wouldn’t hurt. (The Americans standing under storage unit roofing is a cute visual, but ideally there would be a key showing, perhaps, 1 person icon = 10 million Americans, then including 31 person icons under the roof.) I also wonder if the intro paragraph is a bit misleading, because it seems to indicate it’s going to explain why Memorial Day weekend is popular. It instead explains how popular it is.

I’d give this a solid B overall–nice work!

This infographic was submitted to us by MassachussetsCriminalDefense.net

This infographic does a pretty good job of keeping text minimal and utilizing data viz where possible. I love the speedometer imagery–it’s my favorite section of the infographic, although I must admit the injury/no injury section took quite a while for me to understand, as I was looking for the percentages to add up to 100 before I realized that they were percent of ALL crashes, that were alcohol related, that resulted in injury or no injury. Maybe that would be clearer as two separate graphs–what percent of all crashes are alcohol-related, and then what percent of alcohol-related crashes only resulted in injury/no injury.

The estimated cost section is also pretty effective at showing that your insurance costs are the greatest risk–though if there was some data about the average medical cost of a DUI crash, that would be impactful too.

There are a few typos to note throughout, where periods are misplaced or words misspelled (responsibile), but otherwise it’s a pretty good brief overview of what might happen to someone driving under the influence. I would suggest adding an average number of drinks to reach/surpass the legal limit–this would of course have to be based on a particular body weight, age, height etc. but would still be useful to give an idea. Two drinks? Three?

Overall I’d give this infographic a B–it’s informative without being overbearing, too long, too sparse, too text-heavy or lacking in data visualization.
