This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at PGI. They also included this description:

“This infographic shows technology trends over the past two decades. One side represents changes in technology regarding our personal lives, while the right side represents changes regarding the workplace. Ever since email revolutionized the workplace in 1990, many products like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and iMeet have altered the way people live and interact with others.”

I like the style and organization of this timeline, allowing for more event descriptions as we descend into the future. It has some interesting points in tech history–such as when the number of text messages exceeded the number of phone calls. The color scheme is simple, but at least it isn’t overbearing.

Ultimately, this isn’t an infographic–it’s a timeline. There are many opportunities for data viz here, and they’re all missed. It’s informative, but not visually oriented. You have to read to get any information out of this, and there are so many statistics and facts that are only represented by text, when they could easily be turned into charts and graphs.

In order for this to work as an infographic, a lot of the types of data would need to be shifted. It could either remain a timeline with more data viz worked in to each year, or there could be a separate section dedicated to statistics.

Also, there are no sources listed for this infographic. This means anyone wanting to check up on the information would have to do their own search, and it’s hard to tell where the researchers got their data. It’s generally good to show your sources to give your research more credibility.

Overall I’d have to give this a D as an infographic, since there is no data viz. If many of the numbers were turned into visuals, the design was amped up and the sources were given, this could get up to a B or more!

This infographic was submitted to us by Psychology-Schools.com. Unfortunately, we were unable to post it by Halloween! They provided this description:

“Our infographic presents a lot of useful and funny information about Halloween. To be more specific, the infographic includes some not widely-known facts from the history of Halloween. What is even more interesting, it provides information about monsters and beasts from various cultures and mythologies, some famous superstitions and the explanation of them (you know that black cat is a bad sign, but why? You will know it after studying this infographic!).”

I like the spooky design of this IG, and it does contain some interesting facts. The candles representing Halloween spending are a really clever way to transform what would be a boring bar graph into something that fits the theme. It was also interesting to learn about all the mythical monsters from the legends of different countries.

The candle bar graph is my favorite part of the infographic, and it’s also one of only two examples of data viz in the whole infographic. This is very text-heavy, and an infographic should always rely on the visualization of data for the bulk of its information.

There were also a lot of misspellings and plenty of bad grammar. This makes it look like the infographic was thrown together haphazardly. The “History and Origin” section is an unfortunate beginning to the graphic, because it looks especially poorly designed.

This graphic would benefit from much more attention to detail, both visually and grammatically. It also needs much more visualization to correct the proportions. There are many statistics that are only represented via text right now. As is, I’d have to give this infographic a D.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Misco. Here is what they had to say about their infographic upon submitting it to us:

Currently Misco has been working on an infographic demonstrating Education through the ages and the massive transaction between “old” times and the current, I think with technology exploding at the moment it creates quite an interesting contrast.

I really enjoy the illustrations on this infographic. A lot of the information here is very dense and there is a lot of text, so the illustrations break up the content nicely, as well as add a little something to each point. I especially love the medieval section – the dragon, while slain, is actually pretty cute!

The bad thing about this infographic is that it does not visualize data even though there are several opportunities to do so. Any of these statistics could be visualized: all percentages could be represented as pie charts, where fractions (such as 1 in 20) and quantitative data can be represented with icons. Although there is a lot of great information here, it feels a lot like a reading assignment. Remember the biggest rule of data visualization: if you can take out all of the text and it doesn’t make sense, then it is not a traditional infographic – it is more like a well-designed article.

Overall, I really like this piece – it is an interesting subject and it is well-illustrated, but it is just not an infographic. Overall, I have to give it a C+.

This infographic comes to us from the folks at Social Grocery who had this to say:

Forget spring, summer, fall, or winter, our favorite season is FAIR SEASON. State fairs have been long running traditions in many states across the country, the oldest one dating back to 1841 in New York.

This infographic shows the history of the state fair, a month by month breakdown of state fairs across the country and specific dates for state fairs in 2011. We also included some of our favorite fair foods and the calorie, carb, and fat breakdown, as well as how long it would take to burn the calories! (we prefer not to think about that part, though!)

I really like this infographic, the layout, graphics, and colors all work really well and there is minimal use of text. The information also held my attention throughout and I enjoyed looking at all aspects of this.

Overall I give this infographic an B because it has great data visualization and really tells a story about state fairs. To start off, the map showing what months different state fairs take place in across the U.S. is a great visual way to present the information. The section about fair food is also really interesting and visually appealing. I particularly like the graph at the bottom that shows how far you would need to walk to burn off each type of fair food, the use of shoes creates good data visualization.

As I already mentioned, this infographic uses text very minimally and almost only for the purpose of labelling things, so readers do not have to navigate through large blocks of text to get the information. I really don’t have any big suggestions that would improve this, the overall flow is nice and the colors and graphics fit the theme.

This infographic about the old Commodore 64 comes to us from the folks at Discount Coder.

I really like the style of this infographic, it makes me feel like I’m staring at a computer screen in the 80s with the plain black background and basic looking computer text that is used in spots. I also like the section that shows different Commodore systems throughout the years.

Even though I like how this looks, as an infographic I have to give it a D+. The main problem is that there is very little data visualization, it mostly consists of pictures with text next to them containing all the information. For example, the timeline looks nice and I like how some of the data is presented on a computer screen, but I would like to see more graphics that correspond to points on the timeline and tell readers something visually. Also in the specs section the picture doesn’t tell anything about the data. Individual graphics that correspond to the different specs like sound, memory, etc. would add a lot to the data visualization.

I like the little bar graph that compares pricing of the Commodore 64 with its competitors at the time, using pictures of the devices to represent the bars on the graph is a good idea. I would however suggest centering the names of these devices under the corresponding keyboards instead of having them crammed together in the corner, just a minor fix but little things like this can make a big difference in the overall quality of an infographic. Another small thing to change is the consistency of font throughout, sometimes information is in old-school computer font but other times it just looks pasted from a Word document. I suggest keeping it more consistent to go with the 80s computer theme.

I like the general feel of this infographic and it definitely has the right idea but due to lack of data visualization and a few other minor things I can’t give it a higher grade as it is.

This infographic about the history of roller coasters comes to us from the people at Area Vibes.

I like how this infographic uses rollercoasters as a timeline with carts as points in history. There is also a lot of very interesting information on this that I enjoyed reading.

I give this a D+ overall. The problem is that all of the information is presented in text and the roller coaster timeline graphic only gives a general idea of the progression of the roller coaster throughout history. There needs to be better data visualization to make this a good infographic. I would suggest modifying how the roller coaster tracks look at different points along the timeline to represent actual points in history. For example the beginning of the track could be covered in icicles or something to represent the first ice slides in Russia. There are some small pictures next to captions that show what the events in roller coaster history are, and this is a good touch, but overall most of the information can only be found out by reading.

Like I already mentioned, I really like the idea of using a roller coaster as a timeline, but as it is readers just have to scroll down through a big meaningless winding roller coaster as they read big chunks of information. If this were shrunk down and improved to represent the data more visually it could be a much better infographic. The information is definitely there it just needs to be presented in a more interesting and visually appealing way, otherwise I would rather just read it in one paragraph.

This infographic definitely has some of the right ideas, but I can’t give it a higher grade until there is more data visualization going on and less reading. If the timeline were simplified and made more unique along different stretches of track it would raise the overall quality significantly.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Dell. This is what they had to say about it on their website:

“Cloud Computing has been a concept that dates back as early as the 1960s. It has had many precursors such as utility computing, the ASP model, autonomic computing, and the list goes on. [This infographic] is an interesting take by some colleagues on the cloud computing history that includes some fun facts along the way.”

Dell knew what they were doing- it has all the components of a kick-butt infographic: the design is fluid and data driven, it has a clean color pallet, it is not too text heavy, and it tells a story.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite parts of this infographic. First, I like the use of a time line not only to lay out facts, but also to lead viewers through the entire story. The time line even has arrows, so we don’t have to think twice about where they want us to go. Next, the information is presented visually! This is an obvious requirement of an infographic, but often times people get caught up with cool statistics and fail to visualize the data. All of the statistics have some kind of visualization, which I appreciate, although I would suggest a little variation with the types of graphs and charts used.

My favorite graph/chart is the very first one, which uses cash to represent the bars in a tradition histogram. I wish there was a little more creativity with a few of the other charts. It would be nice to see a few more eye-catching graphics, but it isn’t completely necessary.

The color palette is clean and easy on the eyes. Everything that should stand out, does. The designer chose a nice font and did a good job of highlighting interesting facts by making them bold, large, or different colors. I am also happy to see an appropriate amount of text in the infographic. The story could still be deciphered if text was eliminated, which is a quality of a good infographic.

This submission is overall pleasing and I would give it an A. Bravo, Dell!

This infographic comes to us from the people at Screen Paint HD.

I like the simple artwork down the left side of this infographic showing the progression of the home theater. There are some nice details like the 8mm projector in a coffin and Star Wars playing on the TV screen to represent the time period when VHS and VCRs took over in homes.

Overall I give this infographic a C because it could do a better job of connecting the text with the graphics. As it is the right side is devoted to text, which holds all the real information here, and the left side is full of artwork which doesn’t always represent the data or tell the whole story without help from text. For example the whole top section of artwork doesn’t really tell us anything, there is a vaguely 60s looking man holding a lime that represents the “limelight” being invented, but the problem is that the man doesn’t match the time period of that invention.

I think the bottom half of the artwork does a better job of displaying information about the progression of the home theater. Like I mentioned before the Star Wars connection with VHS is a nice touch, and further down the projector screen with tall speakers and 3D glasses on the floor does a nice job of showing where home theater technology stands today.

The overall problem with this infographic is that the text on one half doesn’t match with the artwork on the other half. Readers have to read everything to get all the statistics, and although there is a timeline drawn out, the dates only roughly match up with anything in the artwork. I would also suggest changing the font used for the dates because it is very hard to read unless it is really blown up.

There are some nice touches in this infographic that I like, but it simply needs to have more of a connection between the dates and text with all the information and the artwork.

This infographic was designed by us for BurialInsurance.org and is about the life and death of Osama Bin Laden. Here is a summary of some of the data in the infographic:

Osama had 3,302 total victims.

Osama Bin Laden’s attacks incurred a total cost of $3 trillion dollars. This is only slightly less than the Federal Budget for 2012.

Prior to his death, Osama had a $52,000,000 reward on his head.

The team responsible for the operation responsible for Bin Laden’s death consisted of 24 Navy Seals and 2 stealth Black Hawk Helicopters.

The total time of the attack resulting in Bin Laden’s death was 40 minutes.

We cannot critique this infographic since it is one of our own designs, but we would love to hear your thoughts. What do you like about this infographic? What don’t you like about it? Please let us know what you think!
